Interference Activity 1 (calibrate diffraction grating) Apparatus (one set per air is ideal)

• Laser (a helium-neon laser or LED laser (Those you used for Snell’s law will work but you need to calibrate them first)

• Double slit transparencies • One ringstand with test tube holder to mount laser • One ringstand with test tube holder to mount double slit transparency

Interference Activity 2 (calibrate diffraction grating) Apparatus (one set per pair is ideal)

• Laser • Holographic diffraction grating • One ringstand with test tube holder to mount laser • One ringstand with test tube holder to mount diffraction grating

Interference Activity 3 (determining the wavelength of a spectral band

of light) Apparatus (Each group needs the equipment below)

• Spectrum tube power supply • Mercury spectrum tube • 2 meter sticks • 4 meter stick supports to hold up meter sticks – the mounted meter

sticks should be parallel to the lab table • 1 lens holder that mounts on a meter stick • 2 pointers that mount on meter stick – care needs to be taken to

assure that the pointer are perpendicular to the meter stick • Holographic diffraction grating that student calibrated in the

previous activity • Unknowns are either hydrogen or helium tube

Need for practicums: 5 gallon bucket Empty aquarium Color Theory and Thin Film Interference Fliters came from Amazon Rainbow Symphony Color Filters - Color Filter Set consists of six 8" X 10" sheets - Includes Bonus Sheet of 13,500 Line/Inch Diffraction Grating
