Hi Everyone Well - didnt Spring come with a bang I have been sitting in the sun doing this newsletter and enjoying the 22 de-grees My Bonsai are shooting and buds swelling and it almost seems like it was overnight I noticed despite the light rain some days some of my small pots are drying out Hopefully my Sheoak will come good - it was looking a bit crisp Dont forget to bring your cup for supper next meeting so we dont use as many disposable cups Enjoy your Bonsai

AGM with Special Awards

Last meeting was our AGM and all positions were filled Thanks to all who took positions and for the hard work you put in in the previous year Coral Page the president of the Waverley Garden Club came to our meeting to award some very worthy Life Mem-berships Thanks Coral They were awarded to Bruce Argaet and Ray Ashton - both very deserving members that have put many years of work and time into making this club great and run smoothly

Last Meeting

Josh Coates amp Bruce Argaet gave us some great insight into aspects of bonsai Josh talked about Micro Climates and how putting your trees against a warm wall in winter will promote early leaf formation or flowering You can use this knowledge to help time your plants to be at their best for shows by moving them closer or fur-ther away from the warm wall Bruce demonstrated how he put a large bend in his tree with the padding he used and the heavy wiring He showed the stages of removing this and the resulting bent trunk

Later this was followed by a wonderful supper which as supplied by the members

Bonsai Terminology NTERNODE Section of growth between two nodes (leaves or leaf-joints) JIN A deadwood effect on a bonsai- can be either an old branch or a protruding part of the trunk Jins can be found naturally occurring on old collected trees though are more often than not artificially created from un-wanted branches

Re-potting amp Pruning The last of the trees should be root pruned and re potted before the buds burst

Trees are generally top-pruned in conjunction with root pruning

After Re-potting

Wait a few weeks before attempting to wire a tree to avoid damaging fine shoots just emerging Do not

wire new shoots until the wood begins to harden

Plants that have been re-potted should not be fertilized for about 4- 6 weeks

Place the plant in a sheltered area for most of that period of time

Maples develop new growth very quickly

Blossoming amp Fruiting Trees

Most blossoming and fruiting trees are best re-potted after flowering but sometimes leaves emerge dur-

ing the flowering period ndash re-pot these before then even if during flowering

Fertilising

Start fertilising trees once they have recovered from the re-potting and are growing strongly again This

can vary from a month after re-potting till late summer

Conifers

Shape conifers and deciduous trees as long as growth is not apparent Add wiring to set the shape but

monitor for any signs of cutting in as the growing season proceeds

October

Changeable Weather

Check the trees daily when possible as this is still a time for changeable weather

Watch for the growth spurts that might need a bit more water

Leafy trees take more water but go lightly on fruiting trees

Carefully look at the wire and test to see if it is biting in

Remove the wire if the branch has set otherwise rewire it in a different place and loosen the pitch

Repotting

When the buds are growing out it is too late to do repotting

In any case finish all repotting before November

Feeding

October is the time for a 2nd feed but donrsquot do feeding until the buds are growing well

Pruning amp Shaping

Maples grow rapidly and put out long shoots Pinch back to first pair of leaves Remove shoots with long

internodes

You can do pruning but make sure you seal the cuts

Conifers can still be shaped This is a good time for conifers and they will like a position that gets sun-

shine For air layered conifers this is the time to cut off last yearrsquos work and replant the new section Nice

tender leaves attract the pests particularly aphids Conifers can exhibit problems that need insecticide

applied and again 2 weeks later

Scrub trees to get rid of old algae and scaled bark

Re-potting amp Pruning The last of the trees should be root pruned and re potted before the buds burst

Trees are generally top-pruned in conjunction with root pruning

After Re-potting

Wait a few weeks before attempting to wire a tree to avoid damaging fine shoots just emerging Do not

wire new shoots until the wood begins to harden

Plants that have been re-potted should not be fertilized for about 4- 6 weeks

Place the plant in a sheltered area for most of that period of time

Maples develop new growth very quickly

Blossoming amp Fruiting Trees

Most blossoming and fruiting trees are best re-potted after flowering but sometimes leaves emerge dur-

ing the flowering period ndash re-pot these before then even if during flowering

Fertilising

Start fertilising trees once they have recovered from the re-potting and are growing strongly again This

can vary from a month after re-potting till late summer

Conifers

Shape conifers and deciduous trees as long as growth is not apparent Add wiring to set the shape but

monitor for any signs of cutting in as the growing season proceeds

Changeable Weather

Check the trees daily when possible as this is still a time for changeable weather

Watch for the growth spurts that might need a bit more water

Leafy trees take more water but go lightly on fruiting trees

Carefully look at the wire and test to see if it is biting in

Remove the wire if the branch has set otherwise rewire it in a different place and loosen the pitch

Repotting

When the buds are growing out it is too late to do repotting

In any case finish all repotting before November

Feeding

October is the time for a 2nd feed but donrsquot do feeding until the buds are growing well

Pruning amp Shaping

Maples grow rapidly and put out long shoots Pinch back to first pair of leaves Remove shoots with long

internodes

You can do pruning but make sure you seal the cuts

Conifers can still be shaped This is a good time for conifers and they will like a position that gets sun-

shine For air layered conifers this is the time to cut off last yearrsquos work and replant the new section Nice

tender leaves attract the pests particularly aphids Conifers can exhibit problems that need insecticide
