The humble boardshorts, one of surfi ng’s oldest and closest friends... what could be simpler? It’s a rare occasion to surf in a pair in this country and yet they still remain an essential item for every British surfer’s wardrobe, and with good reason. For a start, once you reach puberty, shorts become an item of clothing that require careful consideration before purchasing; your days of running around in ones

resembling shiny boxer shorts are over. This leaves the adult male who wishes to expose some leg with only a handful of options. First up, there’s the sporty shorts, those ones that don’t even cover your thighs, have small slits up the side and were the PE teacher’s uniform of choice for many years. Most people avoid wearing these shorts for obvious reasons, but unfortunately middle aged men sometimes have a nasty habit of re-discovering them to feel sporty again. Don’t expect to be welcome down the park in a pair of these hot pants. Then of course there’s the other extreme, the extra long shorts that make you look like you’ve been wearing the same pair of trousers since you were twelve. For some reason the same people that think these shorts look good, also seem to think they look better with socks, so they end up daringly exposing about an inch and a half of shin. If we accept that despite the best efforts of trendy hipsters, the cut off denim shorts belong in the eighties that leaves us with only one option for getting our legs tanned and maintaining a shred of style… the humble boardshorts. And yet still there are subtle differences in boardies that can either make you look super rad, or embarrassing dad. For me, their length has to be pretty exact, fi nishing a couple of inches above the knee. Any longer and it starts creeping into the ‘are those trousers a bit short for you?’ territory, and any shorter means that you have to be careful who you sit down in front of. If the legs are too skinny, the shorts become uncomfortable and I will look like a Hawaiian cyclist, but if they are too baggy, people may think I am wearing a skirt. Bold, bright colours are fi ne, but only in big blocks, and not too many different ones, I don’t want to feel sick every time I look at my crotch. I like to have some stretch in my boardies, but it is possible to have too much, and then you feel like you’re wearing a fat man’s cycling shorts. One pocket on the back is useful, but side pockets pop out in the water and are good for nothing except doing elephant impressions. Apart from that though, I’m not too fussy, which is good cos there’s a lot to choose from. Check them out, the humble boardshorts… what could be simpler? (Oh yeah and there’s some t-shirts as well, but don’t even get me started on them.)
