You bought it, you own this steed, she’s all yours, designed to your precise, perverted measurements, like in that ‘80s fi lm Weird Science. Dribbling yet? I thought so; you seem like the type of person who appreciates the kinky pleasure of buying a new board. Go grab yourself a cold shower before turning the pages you throbbing love machine. Those of you who are still here, those of you who are wondering why the hell I’m talking about licking a surfboard, you guys feeling cheated cos you aren’t interested in a board guide and are quite happy with your 6’2” thruster you’ve had for 7 years, lying in the garage with a chipped nose, a crack in the yellowing rail, compression craters covered in blackening wax and a shoelace holding your cheapo leash on... please don’t lick your board. Instead, pay attention whilst I try and talk dirty to you. A new board WILL make you surf better. A bit direct I admit, but there you go I’ve said it. Buying yourself a brand new board will push you out of the stale relationship you’ve got with that poor old ride and get you excited about surfi ng again. Unless you’re an idiot with a sack full of money, you’ll have to become interested in new shapes, fi n set-ups, rails, volume and all sorts of stuff you haven’t thought about for years. And at some point along your road of rediscovery, that chore of research will quietly transform into a geeky obsession, a fetish even, I guarantee it. Things have moved on a bit since you bought that 6’2”. Take our friend Jack Freestone here (he’s the guy waving on the left.) See how happy he is? If you and Jack swapped boards for the day, chances are he would still be capable of throwing tail, and you’d still be burying rail, but by the end of the day he’d be surfi ng slightly worse than usual and you’d be surfi ng a bit better. That ‘bit’ is what it’s all about. It’s the reason to get excited about getting that perfect shape under your feet and it’s the reason why surfers become mildly aroused when choosing a new board. So let your inhabitations go, sit back and drool over the following sticky pages. And if you feel yourself getting excited, go with it, buy yourself a brand new stick and lick it. It doesn’t make you a weirdo. We do it all the time.

2011BOARDGUIDE

LICK IT... GO ON, LICK IT... RUN YOUR TONGUE UP THAT RAIL AND SLIDE YOUR NOSE UP TO ITS, BREATHING IN THE RAW STENCH OF GLASS. CARESS THAT TAIL BETWEEN YOUR INNER THIGHS AND REACH AROUND TO FEEL THAT SUBTLE CONCAVE WITH YOUR FINGERTIPS. LICK THE STRINGER; GO ON... IT’S OK... LICK IT.

SHAPER: JASON STEVENSON If you haven’t heard of JS Surfboards before then you’ve either lived a very sheltered life or you’re probably a bodyboarder! In case you didn’t know already, the initials JS belong to the living legend that is Jason Stevenson. At the tender age of fi ve, when most of his chums were playing with their toys, he started surfi ng - and even now he still remains totally hooked. He has been fortunate enough to have lived a life long dream of surfi ng, travelling the globe, competing and now shaping boards for surfers all over the world. For Jason, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing the stoke on someone’s face when he spies them riding one of his designs. He says ‘Our current models culminate my life experiences, an amazing dream team testing our

newest concepts in the best waves worldwide and quality hand picked craftsmen fi ghting for the cause. Having shaped boards since I was 25 years old I feel it is a super exciting to be doing this in today’s climate because surfi ng has seemed to have stepped up again to another level as well as having rapid technological growth and innovation with designs. It truly is an exciting time.’ Jason is also sponsored by Billabong, Electric Visual and DVS, and says he will always appreciate their support forever. Out of all of the surfers’ Jason shaped for, he says his two favourites are his kids – ‘they rip!’

TEAM RIDER: JAYCE ROBINSON Jayce Robinson is no longer a super grom from St.Ives, he is a fully grown man now! He surfs better than most people and we feel he deserves an interview. How do you become a surfer growing up in England? Like any other coastline in the world, you deal with the conditions you have and have as much fun as possible. For sure it’s harder than most places, it’s more challenging and I like that. What are the waves like in your area? My local beach has fun smash-able waves. It’s fi ckle at times but when it’s on, it’s my favourite spot to surf in the world. It’s my home after all and I know everyone there and I can take as many waves as I like! Could you possibly live somewhere

else other than Cornwall? Yeah I think I could easily live in south west France, Australia or Hawaii! But I would always have to go back to my home every now and then. Home will always be a very special, beautiful place and all my friends, and family are there. What are your plans for the next fi ve years? I’m going to give the WQS my best shot and try to qualify. It’s a dream for me. I have got this far and I have to keep on chasing it. What’s your goal as a surfer? My ultimate goal is to qualify for the WCT but also I want to visit and surf in as many surf destinations as I possibly can. I want to discover the whole world. My friend Matt is sailing around the world soon and I want to fi nd a new wave somewhere with him.

TIKI: PROZAC Get your summer steez on with this super fun shortboard from Tiki. Fishy fatness for mush burgers, pulled in pintail for punchy beachies. 3-5 fi ns.5’8, 6’1 or 6’6FROM: £339

TIKI: CLX TECH All new for 2011, our SLX tech from 2008 tweaked for more strength and response with Carbon torsion strips.

Available across the range.FROM: £452, in six models.

TIKI: FEATHER FOILS Stringerless Feather Foil Tech combines the surgical precision of carbon with the natural fl ex of Bamboo.

Three models by Bruce McKeeFROM: £439

MCKEE: RETROLUTION Legendary shaper, Bruce McKee with a fast becoming legendary shape, the Retrolution. If you can only own one board for all conditions, this is it.5’8 – 6’3FROM: £385

FEATHER FOIL TECHNOLOGY: Five years ago we began a development process. Traditional custom board materials were outdated and toxic. In 2007 we released SLX. Stringered, EPS cores, Epoxy lay-ups. Lightweight, strong, super responsive and not super expensive. We added Biaxial cloth to improve the strength to weight ratio, tried multiple fi n boxes, foam inserts, patches and parabolic stringers. Finding the limits of standard cloths we went to Carbon; top sheets, rails, stringerless confi gurations. Getting a little pricey we brought it back down to an SLX, Carbon combo: the CLX. Strong, light and responsive. But we wanted more. We’d used materials to make the custom board materials lighter and more durable, but what if we could make them surf better? Bamboo.

We tried a sheet on an SLX board. It was terrible! Forget dropping a piece of bamboo onto a stringered epoxy board. It sucks up resin, weighs a ton and with the stringer in place doesn’t fl ex at all. So we took the stringer out and broke a load of boards. We developed a higher density EPS foam (6x denser than the industry standard), combined our knowledge of parabolic rails and Carbon and developed a HD-EPS, Stringerless, Carbon, Bamboo combo. It’s a bit of a mouthful so here’s a summary: These boards weigh a fraction of your board. They are stronger than anything we’ve produced before. They combine the natural feeling fl ex of Bamboo with the precise response of Carbon rails. We have three shapes by legendary shaper Bruce Mckee, from 5’6 to 6’10.

TAKE OFF SURFBOARDS: Built emphasizing quality, durability and value for money without compromising on style and performance. Designed to take you from a complete novice to an above average standard. Built to withstand hard knocks, and are designed to deliver maximum durability and performance in their design and construction. Construction of the surfboards starts with a hand shaped EPS foam blank with a wooden stringer running down the centre to provide strength and torsional rigidity. The EPS foam core is extremely light which enables us to use additional layers of fi bre glass and epoxy resins giving a stronger and more impact resistant surfboard. The bottom of the EPS foam core is fi rst laminated with two layers of 6oz fi bre glass cloth saturated in Epoxy

resin (similar to a traditional custom surfboard, yet using more cloth for greater strength and durability). The deck is then laminated with two layers of 6oz and one 4oz layer of fi bre glass fabric again being saturated in epoxy resin and hand sanded back for a perfect fi nish. The next stage is to place it in a heat curing oven; this further strengthens the epoxy resin. Once cured and the fi nal sanding completed FCS fi n plugs are set and the board is sent off for its graphics. This construction method means that the boards are seamless, unlike moulded or ‘pop-out’ surfboards which sometimes have a tendency to split along the seams; by wrapping the fi bre glass around the rail (such as in traditional construction), the rail becomes an integral part of the board’s strength.

TEAM RIDER: MATT CAPEL To any Englishman, Matt Capel sounds likes an Aussie, yet to Aussie’s, he sounds like an Englishman, go fi gure. The reason for this is because the regular-footer was born in Devon, (where he spent most of his life) but moved to Australia with his father many moons ago. Nowadays he bases himself in Newquay, Cornwall. Fortunately for Matty, his father still lives over in Australia which gives him the opportunity to escape the freezing cold here and spend his winter months over there – where he can train hard at his beloved North Narrabeen - a beach break which he cites as one of the best in the world. Having access to these types of waves, Matty has developed as a rounded surfer with a progressive, super smooth style. He’s not a timid

surfer, either and he charges the juicier stuff like a man possessed – especially when it’s hollow! Another one of Matt’s strengths is his ability to constantly push and raise his game, whether that’s surfi ng in heats or shooting photos and video. For a relatively young chap, Matty has travelled extensively and just this winter he spent time at his second home in Oz and also managed to traverse across nearby Indo and Hawaii. At time of writing he is about to return fully cranked up for the new UK season, where, as usual he will look at pushing his surfi ng and raising his game. Keep an eye out in the mag for trips and photos of the man!

GSI: SEASHEPHERD ORG Global Surf Industries are proud to introduce a limited edition release of the specially designed version of the already famous Super Fish in conjunction with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society – a non-profi t organisation dedicated to the protection of marine wildlife. The board itself looks amazing, and is available in both Super Fish and Super Fish XL sizes. By purchasing one of these sticks, you’ll be automatically doing your bit by donating 20% of the sale price to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The board is already loved all of the thousands of surfers around the world who have bought one since its launch a couple of years ago. The secret to the success of the Super Fish is in its design. The most obvious one is the

step deck, this give the board a huge buoyancy advantage but leaves the board with high performance rails. Secondly the bottom of the board features low entry rocker that feeds into a full length concave that helps the board get up and plane quickly. This feeds through to a double in the back to help get the most out of turns. The Super Fish will help you make sections that you never have before, it is fast and smooth. All boards are glassed with a 2 x 4oz deck and 1 x 4oz bottom with a patch on the fi n area. We give the boards either a silky or a gloss polish fi nish and they come standard with FCS M7 Quad Glassfl ex Series fi ns.

MEYERHOFFER/WEGENER: Two very different men bring you two very different types of surfboards. A few years ago world-renowned designer Thomas Meyerhoffer tossed aside all conventional knowledge of what we all know and went on a mission to redesign the surfboard. Without a doubt he has brought us not only true innovation but opened the doors for future designers to test the thinking of the establishment and challenged surfers and shapers alike to consider what really works and why. This year after touring the world, winning design awards in Australia, the US and Europe for his futuristic approach, Thomas introduces the Pill, (a radical Quad), the Lemondrop (a complete reinvention of hybrid performance) and the new 9’1 Comp. At the other end of the

spectrum, Tom Wegener has been studying ancient Hawaiian shapes and design for decades and has discovered not only something we will all benefi t from, but he is bringing us a world of fi nless design concepts that are destined to change the face of modern surfi ng. Through his years of contemplation, testing and design, Tom has recognised that the genius of effi cient surfboard design was discovered hundreds of years ago. Tom’s work is taking us back to the fi nless Alaia and opening the door to our future at the same time. After testing and refi ning Tom Wegener shapes with his team of open-minded surfers, The Seaglass Project brings you the next chapter in surfi ng.
