Trauma Training at WAVE

The WAVE Trauma Training Learning Pathway consists of three progressive strands which are delivered on a regional and cross-border basis.

WAVE have been offering trauma support provision since 1991 and subsequently have developed expertise in the field of trauma and related areas culminating in the Trauma Training Learning Pathway.

WAVE has developed a variety of accredited training courses in the field of trauma. Trauma Training is targeted at those who have been bereaved, traumatised or injured through the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland and border counties, or those working in the community and with agencies impacted by the legacy of the ‘Troubles’. It is also of interest to those who wish to pursue further study in trauma-related areas.

The pathway provides an opportunity for individuals to meet others and reflect on their experiences in established and safe training programmes. Such group initiatives were evaluated as very valuable in promoting understanding, acknowledging difference and building positive, effective and sustainable relationships in a non-threatening environment. Given the vulnerable nature of some of those affected by the ‘Troubles’ the need for skilled and able practitioners is paramount.

“We believe that the WAVE learning pathway is a model of best practice and can claim to surpass other NGO training in the field of trauma studies, peace-building and sustainable professional support.”

Roz Goldie Partnership, The WAVE Trauma Training Learning Pathway Evaluation December 2011

The WAVE Trauma Training Learning Pathway would not be possible without the continuing support of the European Union’s PEACE III programme.

Strand Two: Academic DevelopmentA BSc (Hons) in Psychological Trauma Studies in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast – School of Nursing & Midwifery is provided.

Strand Two focuses on giving individuals the opportunity to gain a Diploma or Degree qualification. The programme seeks to develop the appreciation of the effects of psychological trauma, focusing on the context of surviving violent political conflict and of dealing with the past.

Modules include: Introduction to Psychological Trauma, Trauma and Addiction, Transgenerational Trauma, Transition from Victimhood and Research Methodology.

Strand Three: Professional DevelopmentSpecialist professional practice training in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast.

Strand Three is designed to meet the needs of health and social care professionals. Students and qualified practitioners access professional training to enhance their skills, knowledge and values when working with victims and survivors of the conflict in Northern Ireland.

The uniqueness of this strand is that it involves victims and survivors as citizen trainers. This adds a depth of understanding as this personal interaction contextualizes the theory behind the teaching.

Strand One: Community Development

Strand One delivers trauma and community orientated courses, accredited by OCN NI with workshops and training sessions specifically tailored as required.

The OCN courses were developed as a means of enhancing the ‘helping relationship’, encouraging and enabling society in Northern Ireland and border counties to better understand and respond to the legacy of the past.

• Tailored workshops and training events on related subjects

• Epilogues in partnership with Gaslight Productions

• Open College Network (OCN) accredited programmes:

‘An Introduction to Psychological Trauma’ contains courses covering grief, trauma, compassion fatigue, substance use, addiction and trauma & storytelling.

‘Skills for a Helping Relationship’ contains courses on communication & volunteering skills.

‘Transition from Conflict’ includes the courses ‘Facing History and Ourselves’ & ‘Transition From Conflict’

OCN courses and some workshops are free to individuals and community organisations.

Please contact us regarding training fees for statutory organizations.
