With the holiday season upon us,many people's schedules are hectic onceagain. There are social events and fami-ly gatherings to attend, shopping ven-tures to make, and decorating to bedone. While fun, the holiday season canbe a time of added pressure, which leadsto stress and other unhealthy situa-tions.

At a time when you want to be atyour best, stress can affect your physi-cal well-being. The AmericanPsychological Association says the hus-tle and bustle of the holidays has psy-chological consequences for some peo-

ple. More people are inclined to feelthat their stress increases, rather thandecreases, around the holidays. TheNational Institute of Mental Health sayschronic stress can lower immunity andcause excretory, digestive and reproduc-tive systems to stop working properly.Stress also may cause you to eatunhealthy snacks to cope, and that canlead to unwanted weight gain.

Stress is not the only potentialhealth hazard that can arise around theholidays. A greater number of partiesexpose you to an abundance of foodsand drinks you may not consume on aregular basis, and that can lead to a lotof mindless eating. Weight gained dur-ing this time of year can be difficult to

shed come January, when colder tem-peratures challenge many peoples' moti-vation to exercise.

Also, social settings put you in closecontact with a greater number of peo-ple, potentially increasing your expo-sure to germs.

You can still feel your best duringthe holidays. Follow these tips for main-taining a healthy mind and body.

• Get the flu vaccine. The flu vaccinecan protect you against various strainsof the flu. Get a flu shot before the hol-idays so you are ready for cold and fluseason.

• Carry disinfecting wipes. Germscan linger on surfaces long after aninfected person has come and gone.Studies from researchers at theUniversity of Arizona in Tucson havefound the flu virus - and even theantibiotic-resistant bacteria MRSA - onairline tray tables. Buses, trains anddoors all may be harboring germs. Wipedown surfaces with disinfecting wipesand allow them to air-dry before touch-ing them. This can help you avoid com-ing into contact with germs.

• Balance your activities. It can betempting to overbook your schedulewith a ton of activities, but this mayultimately prove stressful. Leave daysopen to relax and do things you want to

do, such asv i e w i n gC h r i s t m a slight displaysor even justunwinding athome with agood book.Try delegatingsome tasks toothers in thehousehold soyou don't takeon too muchresponsibility.

• Keep upan exerciseroutine. Don'tstray too farfrom youre x e r c i s eschedule. Youmay have to move workout times to freeup other time later in the day for shop-ping or parties. Early morning is a goodtime to exercise because it gets youmoving first thing in the morning andmight even encourage you to hit thesack a little earlier each night, ensuringyou get all the sleep you need. Exercisealso can improve energy levels andrelieve stress.

• Don't focus on food. Focus more on

enjoyable activities that keep yoing rather than always beingaround the table for a big meindulgences for one or two treatsholidays and eat sensibly otherw

• Talk to someone. If the hhave you feeling blue, talk to aor family member. If you neeprofessional support, find a socier or psychologist that can hwork through stress and other f

Dear Ann, I am so sorry for your problems. You didnot mention if this was an immediate set of denturesgiven to you the day your other teeth were removed orsimply a replacement for older dentures. There is an artto making dentures and even with tremendous care andskill; denture fabrication is a process that requirespatience. As people live with dentures they experiencecontinued bone loss. There is so much bone loss thatdentures begin to move and may actually slide duringchewing even with using denture adhesives. When teethare removed you actually lose up to 40% of theremaining bone width in the first year after teeth areremoved and you can continue to lose 40-60% of theremaining bone over the next 5 years of denture use!

The solution is to save teeth if possible and if notpractical to place mini-implants or traditional implants topreserve the bone.

Implants preserve bone! That means that over timedentures will not get as loose and you will chew better.

I will get back to your particular problem. Ill-fittingdentures usually require that they be made again fromscratch. It is just too easy to change someone’s dentureand then feel that the changes that were made could havemade your situation worse! So most dentists will want tostart over with new impressions, brand new teeth andmountings to try and remedy the problems you haveexperienced. Trying to make your dentures fit mayactually take longer and cost a tremendous amount of money, which would be wasted if your dentures couldnot be made to be comfortable.

In rare situations, I will work with someone’s olddentures to improve comfort, eliminate denture sores orsimply to create a healthy foundation for making a new

set of dentures. I would have to assess dentures to make an evaluation of how close tideal and the status of your bite and how youtogether for optimal chewing. Then I could decan do anything with your current set of teeth
