The Waukesha Choral Union has been musically active in the community for over 60 years. Originally a combination of the Carroll College student chorus and community singers named Waukesha Choral Society in 1949, the group became the Town and Gown in 1961 and the Waukesha Choral Union in 1974, taking its present form as an auditioned choir in 1978.

Ernest Brusubardis, III, Artistic

Director of the Waukesha Choral Union, is a

graduate of UW Milwaukee with the

Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Music and the Master’s Degree in Music Education with an emphasis on choral conducting. His other choral directorships include the advanced ensembles of Hartford Union High School and the Brusubardis-Dzimente Latvian Choir, a podium he shares with his father. His expertise in this latter pursuit has earned him the chief conductorship of Latvian Song Festivals in the United States, Canada, and Latvia.

As a music theater enthusiast, he conducts the orchestra for the annual productions at Hartford Union High School and boasts a record as music director for community theater productions throughout Southeastern Wisconsin, including Menomonee Falls Patio Players, On the Wall and Off the Wall theaters, Archangel Productions, and shows at the UW Milwaukee and West Bend extensions.

FROM THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR

Welcome to our Waukesha Choral Union’s season opener, The Human and the Divine. This evening WCU is joined by the Hartford Union High School Concert Choir. The performance includes songs about people’s relationships with each other as well as with the divine. We will offer songs of praise, love, victory, people, life, comfort, and community. All of this will be experienced through various musical styles and texts in many languages not to mention different cultural perspectives.

Here is a small taste of what we have to offer. Psalm is based upon the yoik style of the Sami people. The text has no literal meaning, but the combination of the syllables and music is meant to evoke the context of the title. Bēdu manu, lielu bēdu is a song that encourages us to put our troubles behind us regardless of how bad things might be. Yet in another way, Vamudara, in the Shona tradition, respectfully admonishes someone to change their behavior who is wasting their life away. You will also hear songs from many more cultures and traditions.

The choirs will combine to sing Past Life Melodies, a song that mimics aboriginal singing techniques, and Hope for Resolution, which melds an anti-apartheid song from South Africa with a European chant melody. We hope this concert encourages you to live out your humanity during an age when we indeed need more humanity.

HARTFORD UNION HIGH SCHOOL CONCERT CHOIR

This 48-voice ensemble is the most advanced of four curricular choirs at HartfordUnion High School. The Concert Choir comprises sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are selected by audition from a total choral enrollment of 180 singers in a school population of 1,500 students. The choir rehearses daily for 46 minutes and gives 5 to 7 major concerts per year. The HUHS Concert Choir takes a major performance tour to New York City everythree years and has sung for masses at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Trinity Churchas well as giving concert performances in St. John the Divine, St. Mark’s, and St. Mary’s. The choir has been honored with performances at the Wisconsin Music Educators Association State Convention in 2006 and 2001and the Wisconsin Choral Directors Association State Convention in 2010 and 2003. The group recently represented Wisconsin at the 2009 Festival of States in Washington D.C. honoring Abraham Lincoln. In addition to curricular responsibilities, two Madrigal Ensembles and a Vocal Jazz Ensemble are selected from the choir by audition. Hartford is a community of approximately 12,000 people located45 minutes north-west of Milwaukee. One of the largest geographical schooldistricts in the state, Hartford Union High School has 16 feeder school districts andserves seven rural communities. The Concert Choir is so happy to share its love of performing with the WaukeshaChoral Union in their 2011-2012 season opener.

TODAY ’S VENUE

Holy Hill (elevation: 1,300 ft) is a historic sacred site and a registered national landmark. The shrine atop Holy Hill, the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians, attracts more than 300,000 visitors each year.

The area was first settled around 1842 by Irish natives, who dedicated the hill to the Virgin Mary and were the first to call it “Holy Hill.” For a time it was known as “Government Hill” for

surveying work that was done there. It remained government property until 1855, when the 40 acres atop Holy Hill was purchased by Fr. Paulhuber, a native of Salzburg, Austria.

In June 1858, a 15-foot-high oak cross made from a tree growing on Holy Hill waserected and consecrated on top of the hill. The cross can be seen today in theMarian Hallway of the Shrine.

The first shrine on Holy Hill was dedicated on May 24, 1863. The simple log chapel was named the Shrine of Mary - Help of Christians. In the spring of 1880 construction began on a new shrine. Pilgrims flocked to the shrine, and by the end of the 19th century it was felt that it should come under the administration of a religious order, the Discalced (“Barefoot”) Carmelites, who came from Bavaria.

In 1925, the Shrine of Mary was razed to the ground to be replaced by a third, larger shrine, completed and consecrated in 1931. Various renovations and expansions were made throughout the 20th century to better accommodate pilgrims, visitors, and those on private retreat.

Holy Hill is the highest peak of the Kettle Moraine, a chain of hills and pot-shapedvalleys that begins in the Whitewater area and extends northeast to DoorCounty. The shrine itself sits on about 40 acres, but over the years the friars haveacquired an additional 400 acres of surrounding woodland to preserve the area’scontemplative atmosphere. Visitors can tour the shrine chapel and the grounds,attend daily services, climb an observation deck, and - during the summer - eat atthe Monastery Inn Cafeteria. There are daily devotions at the shrine. Mass is celebrated on the weekends, and confession is available.

The Neo-Romanesque shrine chapel dominates Holy Hill. Above the entrance tothe upper church are two 8-foot marble statues, added in 1956. The statue of St.Mary Help of Christians is on the left, and the statue of St. Joseph, protector of the order, is on the right. Inside the upper church, mosaics depict St. Teresa of Jesus and St. John of the Cross, founders of the Discalced Carmelites. Greekwrought-iron letters are set into the ceiling lamps of the upper church, spellingout the word hodegetria. Hod means “way” and egetria refers to a feminine leader or guide. Thus the reference is to Mary, guide of the Way to Christ.

I want to say thank you to all of you students who have chosen a life in the arts. All the “models” for success and happiness American-style are about what is ultimately a disposable life, centered around material gain and about finding the best possible comfort zone for yourself. You’ve set yourselves apart from a nation that has become such a hostage to distraction that it can’t absorb a single complex thought without having it reduced to a sound byte. Most people now live in a fractured virtual environment where staying focused on a single thought for a mere seven seconds presents a grave challenge. (I mention seven seconds because a researcher at Google told me that 7.3 seconds was the amount of time an average viewer stays on a YouTube video.)

The arts, however, are mind-bendingly and refreshingly difficult, and utterly useless. You can’t eat music or poetry or dance. This “uselessness” is why politicians and other painfully literal-minded people during times of budget crises (which is pretty much all the time now) can’t wait to single the arts out for elimination. They don’t realize that what we artists offer is one of the few things that make human life meaningful. A life in the arts means you value communicating about matters of the spirit over the baser forms of human interaction, because you know that life is not simply a game about winning someone’s confidence purely for purposes of material gain.

Be bold, be humble, don’t mind being difficult, and don’t ever feel that what you’re doing in this attention-deficit disorder country of ours is marginal or unimportant. You are in fact the heart and the soul of its very being.
