Congratulations to Eliza Colby who received an ADFA award. These awards are few in number and highly prized. Wauchope High School students have been very successful in gaining these awards in the past and Eliza should be very proud of the fact that she joins an elite list of recipients. Well done. Within the community our students continue to make a significant contribution at a local level. Congratulations to all of those students involved in the Uniting Church Meals Program and the Bundaleer Nursing Home initiative to name just two volunteering programs that our students are involved in. Our NAIDOC/Education Week Celebrations proved to be a well -supported and highly successful event. The contribution of students, staff, parents and Elders from our community on this day to the first stage of the development of our Yarning Circle has set the project off on the right foot. We are very excited about the next phase of the project and seeing the Yarning Circle complete and becoming an integral part of school celebrations and community involvement. Wauchope High School has been particularly successful on the sporting field in recent weeks. Our Girls Under 16’s Rugby side continue their winning ways while our Open Girls Football side now find themselves in the Final to be played on Wednesday 19th August. This team is now one of the top two teams in the state. Our boys, not to be outdone were very successful in their Harry Wells Cup campaign with our teams achieving a first and second place in their respective age divisions. Well done boys. I would like to thank all of those parents who took the opportunity to be part of three major events in the past two weeks. The Year 10 into 11 Subject Information Night, Years 11 & 12 Parent/Teacher Night and most recently the Year 8 into 9 Subject Information Night were well supported and attended by parents and students. We are sure that students and parents are now well informed about the options available at Wauchope High School in 2016. Thank you also to all the staff who made these nights a success. Year 12 are about to begin week two of their Trial HSC examinations. We wish them well and look forward to them returning to class on Monday 18th August. Year 11 students should now be thinking about their preparations for their final Preliminary HSC Examinations which will take place in weeks 9 & 10 of this Term. I would like to convey my thanks and best wishes to our canteen manager of 15 years Mrs Robyn Turczynski as she begins a new chapter in her life. While she will be missed by many, we wish her and her family all the best for the future. Education Week /NAIDOC Celebrations On Wednesday 29

th July Wauchope High School celebrated NAIDOC as part of its Education

Week activities. Students, staff, Elders and Community members came together with the opportunity to participate in a range of activities to celebrate NAIDOC in support of our Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community. The day began with a whole school Assembly where students, staff, Elders and Community members experienced Welcome to Country in language and were addressed by Elders.

A number of students from Year 7 & 8 were presented with Certificates from the University of Newcastle, Wollotuka Institute for their participation in the iBelieve Program. Recently the Wauchope High Schools Junior AECG was successful in receiving a grant for the building of a Yarning Circle on the school site. Students, staff, elders and community members were invited to inspect the proposed site for the Yarning Circle and give their suggestions for its development. The feedback from elders and community members was gratefully received and we look forward to incorporating their ideas into the development of the Yarning Circle and working closely together as the project moves forward. The first stage in the construction of the Yarning Circle involved

students painting totem poles marking the entrance to the circle and welcoming future visitors to our school. A huge thankyou goes out to Jaime Donovan for his support and involvement. Students participated in a range of activities and workshop during the day including felting, drumming, cooking all provided through the support and guidance of elders, community member s, guests and staff. Wauchope High School would like to thank all involved in the day it was very successful and culturally rewarding for all involved. We look forward to sharing more about the Yarning Circle in the future.

Bunnings Support Wauchope High School on Tree Day

Planet Ark and Bunnings run a yearly program called School Tree Day. A different school each year is chosen as the recipient and this year Port Macquarie decided to support Wauchope High School.

Bunnings will bring 5 Australian Native trees and plant them in the new Yarning Circle . The trees will bring shade in the summer for the students and attract local fauna. The team from Bunnings will arrive about 10:30am on Friday 14th August planting and talking to the children. Bunnings will be supplying the trees, garden gloves, drink bottles, garden hats and garden fertiliser.

Thank you Bunnings and Planet Ark

There has been a busy start to the term with the school hosting many events including the Year 10 and

Year 8 Information nights and Parent Teacher evening just to name a few. I am sure all of the parents who have attended these events will join us in

sending a big thank you to Mrs Chegwidden, Mrs Bloomfield, Mrs

Underwood and their student helpers for fabulous suppers they have

provided. Thank you from all of us a great job!

Mrs Bloomfield always enthusiastic about her work! Mrs Chegwidden the scone expert

Harry Wells Cup

On Tuesday 28th July, the Wauchope High Under 14 and 16 ½ teams travelled to Port Macquarie to participate in the Harry Wells Cup Gala Day, named after and sponsored by veteran Australian Rugby League centre Harry Wells, who is a Port Macquarie local. The day was very successful, with the 16 ½ team finishing second after 4 games and the 14’s team winning the day after defeating arch-rivals Camden Haven in the final match. The Under 14 team were able to meet Harry, and had their photo taken with him after he presented the plaque. Two Wauchope High students, Will and Jamaine, also received medals for the Best and Fairest player in each age division. Thanks very much to Mr Starr and Mr Whittock for coaching the two teams. Mr Whittock said how pleased

he was with the improvement of many of the less experienced players in the 14’s side, and that the overall

improvement of the team was terrific.

David meets the great Harry Wells

On Wednesday 5th August the girls under 16’s Rugby Team

travelled to Granville Park, Sydney to compete in the CHS Rugby Union 7’s State Cup. On a cold windy day the girls performed

brilliantly, playing 5 games to end up fourth in the state. All of the

girls were outstanding. Tori was awarded Players Player

for the day. Great job girls and coach Mr

Taylor.

Congratulations to the Open Girls Football who are now in the finals

The Open Girls Football (Soccer) team went to Valentine Sports Park, Glenwood, Sydney to play the semi final against Albury High School on a synthetic surface that most had not experienced before. Although we dominated the first half, a lapse in concentration left an opposing player unmarked who placed the ball wide of our goalie and into the net. Our many chances were saved by the opposition goalie or just wide of the target. Half time score, Albury 1 – Wauchope 0. A long distance half time talk on speaker phone by injured coach Ms Jones inspired the girls who returned to the field ready to play great football. The crowd was not disappointed. Albury’s strengths were shut down and this opened the field up for many opportunities for our girls. Fantastic play saw our girls equalise not long into the second half and the nerves vanished. Our dominance all over the field was a great sight to see. Comments from the crowd were heard. “These girls player better football than many of the boys in my team” was just one example. The deadlock was broken by another strong effort from all, giving Wauchope a 2-1 lead. Soon it was 3-1 and the girls were digging deep to remain the dominant team. Another lapse 7 minutes from full-time saw Albury reduce the lead to one goal. The girls dug even deeper to maintain control and wind the clock down. Full time, Wauchope 3 – Albury 2. The girls were ecstatic, as too were the crowd, Mrs Thornton (medical officer) and I (Stand-in Coach). Our next goal is to defeat Wooloware High School in the Final on Wednesday 19

th August.

All of the girls performed extremely well in this tense situation. Well Done Relieving and Proud Coach Ray Grimson
