Definition★Wau game is one of the traditional games of the Malays since hundreds of

years ago.

★The game contains elements of authentic Malay culture. This can be seen in the form of patterns and designs available on the wau.

★The word "wau" is said to derive from the word Thailand as the state of Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis and Kedah use the word. Word kite is used in many states in the West and South Coast of Peninsular Malaysia such as Kuala Lumpur, Malacca and Johor.

★ It also said that the farmer in the past used wau to scarecrow to ward off the birds from their paddy fields.

History❏The origin of the ‘ wau ‘ was said to exist during the days of the Srivijaya

Empire, in which according to the legend, Dewa Muda used ‘wau‘ to mapped out the districts that he already conquered on the ‘wau‘.

❏He will then display and tell to his people.The patterns of flowers and leaves on the ‘wau‘ were said to represent the districts that he already conquered.

❏Thus, when he went from battle, the patterns on his ‘wau‘ will continuously to ‘grow’, symbolising how strong his empire at that moment.

❏Some people believed that he obtained extraordinary spiritual advice by flying up to the heaven on his ‘wau’ and developed the spiritual relationships with the inhabitants of another world.

Characteristics

➢ ‘Wau’ was measured 2.5 metres wide and 3.5 meters long.

➢ The typical colour for the ‘wau’ usually strong coloured patterns or bright

colours to make it looks more extraordinary.

Types Of Wau➔ There are many types of ‘wau’ and the most widely known is Wau Kikik

which is Malay kite.Wau Kikik is the simple tailless kite that was shape as

the diamond.

➔ Besides there are many other kites such as Wau Bulan, Wau Kucing and

Wau Jalabudi.They are considered as the National Kites and it was made

as the main item in the national kite competitions.

How to make wauThis is the process how to make a wau by your own even you live outside Malaysia. You could choose your own patern and design. Basically, wau is

synonim with the traditional design. The main skeleton of wau uses bamboo stick and tied up with string.

1. Attach the end of the tail for both left and right to the wing.

2. For the waist of the wau, make 2 semi circles from the bamboo stick to form

a circle as shown in Wau Bulan pict The spine of wau is measured into 3

parts, then marking the point of separation.

completed.
