Waterton Park Community Association Update Greetings WPCA Members We trust that everyone is enjoying this wonderful Waterton summer and all it has to offer. The WPCA Board is pleased to provide, what we plan to be the first, of biannual, updates of its activities and operations. The Board is pleased to announce that Carey Tetzlaff has been appointed to the Board. Carey will bring his enthusiasm, family history, education and youth to benefit the WPCA. The Board expects to announce a further addition to the Board in September. The $1.6 million dollar Waterton Community Centre Centennial Project is virtually complete. If you’ve seen the changes, you will agree it is a beautiful facility and one that will serve us well for generations to come. Thank you to everyone involved for their hard work over the past several years. We wish to thank our architect John Savill and general contractor, Wayne Harris of Jenex Construction for their fantastic work resulting in the Project coming in on time, on budget, and well beyond expectations. The entire project was funded by financial contributions from all levels of government and we thank them for their support. Almost all funding has been received and all accounts are paid. Waterton Park Community Association Update

Greetings

WPCA  Members

We   trust   that   everyone   is  enjoying   this   wonderful  Waterton   summer   and   all  it   has   to   offer.   The  WPCA  Board   is   pleased   to  provide,   what   we   plan   to  be   the   first,   of   bi-‐annual,

updates   of   its   activities  and  operations.

The  Board  is  pleased  to  announce  that  Carey  Tetzlaff  has  been  appointed  to  the  Board.  Carey  will  bring  his  enthusiasm,  family  history,  education  and  youth  to  benefit  the

WPCA.

Thank   you   to   everyone

involved   for   their   hard   work  over   the   past   several   years. The  entire

project  was  funded  by   financial   contributions   from  all   levels   of   government   and  we   thank   them   for   their  support.  Almost  all  funding  has  been  received  and  all  accounts  are  paid.

In   spring,   we   invited   the  community   to   contribute   to  the  furnishings  and  equipment  needed   to   enhance   the   look  and   use   of   the   new   facility.    We   are   thrilled   to   report   that  there   has   been   an  overwhelming   response.   To  date   we   have   raised  approximately   $75,000.   The  community  member  donations  have   been   used   to   pay   for  items   such   as   the   rock  wainscoting   on   the   exterior  north   and   west   walls,   the  kitchen   appliances   including   a  fantastic  commercial  stove  and  commercial   dishwasher,   a  donation   of   a   magnificent  piano   (which   was   played   on  the   July   1st   weekend   to   rave  reviews),   new   tables   to   be  used   in   the   meeting   rooms,  installation   of   Audio   Visual  equipment   in  the  north  school  room  and  many  other  items.

We   continue   to   receive  donations   for   items   on   our  Wish   List,   and   invite   you   to  make   your   donation   through  the   Waterton   Foundation   for  tax   purposes.   Contributors   of  $500   or   more   will   be  acknowledged   on   a   plaque   on  a   donor   wall   in   the   WCC   by  spring   2013.   Go   to  http://www.mywaterton.ca/page.cfm?pgID=108   for   a  donation  form.

The   response   to   the   new  Waterton   Community   Centre  has  been  extremely  positive  on  many   accounts.   The   quality  and   beautiful   features   inside  and   out   wow   everyone   that  has   viewed   the   building.  Bookings   have   been   steadily  increasing   and   families   and  groups   that   have   used   the  Centre   to   date   are   giving   us  rave   reviews!   Contact   the  manager,   Derrick   Hawes   at  403-‐859-‐2114   or   email  [email protected]   to  book  your  event.

The   Federal   Government   has  recently   announced   the   new  Community   Infrastructure  Improvement   Fund,   which  makes   available   46   million  dollars   to   the   western  provinces   for   community  centre  infrastructure.

Recently  we  submitted  an  application  that  will  allow  us  to  implement  a  landscaping  plan,  and  complete  a  few  amenities  inside  the  WCC.    Included  in  our  plans  are  a  redevelopment  of  the  sports  field,  the  play  area,  and  gathering  spaces.  Following  submission  of  the  application,  the  Board  met  with  our  Member  of  Parliament,  Mr.  Jim  Hillyer,  to  inform  him  of  our  plans  and  to

seek  his  support.  We  expect  to  be  advised  of  the  outcome  of  our  application  by  October  31,  2012.

At  the  Annual  General  Meeting  on  the  May   long  weekend,  we  reported   that   the   Golf   Course  continues   to  be  a  challenge.   It  has   lost   substantial   sums   of  money   in   five   of   the   last   six  years.   This   has   resulted   in   the  Board   undertaking   a   major  restructuring   of   the  management   and   operations  of   the   golf   course,   including   a  new   Operations   Manager  (Derrick   Hawes),   a   new  financial   bookkeeper   (Cheryl  Stroh)   and   a   greater   advisory  role   by   our   auditors   Young  Parkyn  McNab  of  Lethbridge.

The   Board   is   committed   to   its  fiduciary   duties   and  responsibilities   and   is   working  diligently  with  the  help  of  YPM  to   bring   the   golf   course   back  into   at   least   a   break-‐even  position.     The   auditors   are  providing   us   with   clear  direction   and   advice   on  accountability   and   disclosures  to   our   members.   Various  options   are   being   considered  to   ensure   the   long-‐term  sustainability   of   the   Golf  Course.

A   recent   enhancement   to   our  accounting   system   is   the   new  computer   hardware   systems  with   LAN,   software   packages  specifically   designed   for   golf  course  operations  and  which  is  fully   integrated   with   our  external   internet  communications   and   existing  accounting  software  systems.
