Water and moisture, which penetrates into buildings
due to rain, snow, groundwater and water leakage;
while damaging all structural elements and primarily
the load bearing systems, also results in unseemly
appearances in buildings, turning living spaces into
unhealthy environments. Kalekim Waterproofing
Solutions prevents the penetration of water and
moisture into the building and as such protects them
against these external influences hence rendering
them long-lasting, durable and safe structures offering
comfortable and healthy living spaces.
In buildings lacking waterproofing, the water that
penetrates the reinforced concrete of the load bearing
system causes the concrete to lose its load bearing
capacity along with causing corrosion resulting in loss
of thickness of the cross section. Moreover, freezing of
water, which seeps into construction elements in cold
weathers leads to fractures and disintegration in the
concrete. Consequently resistance of the load bearing
system weakens in time and the safety of the building
becomes suspect. For all these reasons, Waterproofing
is essentially important to have safe and durable
buildings.
On the other hand, any undesired effects of water
and moisture penetration into interior areas, such as
damage to the hardwood floors and painted surfaces,
formation of mold and fungi threatening human health,
can be prevented by waterproofing and it becomes
possible to create comfortable and healthy living
spaces.
In order for waterproofing to provide the foregoing
benefits and be durable and hygienic as well, it
would not be sufficient to use the right materials. It is
essential for the right materials to be used at the right
place and time by implementing the right methods to
be able to provide waterproofing successfully.
Kalekim, with its expertise in construction chemicals
and wide range of product portfolio, is offering you the
most suitable and highest performance solutions for
different waterproofing applications.

When İZOSEAL is applied to concrete surfaces, it penetrates into concrete and ac-
tive chemicals it contains reacts with free lime and moisture in the capillary gaps
of the concrete and forms insoluble crystal structures. These crystals fill the gaps
and contraction cracks in the concrete and prevent the passage of water and make
the concrete resistant to negative and positive water pressure. İZOSEAL does not
obstruct water vapor passage, which is the air-permeability of the concrete and thus
enables complete drying of the concrete, increases the compression strength of the
concrete and protects the enforcement.

the concrete to become impermeable by entering into a chemical reaction
with the concrete structure it is applied to, it is able to penetrate effectively
into the concrete. Therefore, the pores of the concrete to which İZOSEAL
is to be applied should be open. If the surface is glossy, then the surface
should be roughened with pressurized water or sanding. The surface should
be moist in order to ensure maximum reaction and should be moisturized
prior to application.
Application— Pour 25 kg of powder slowly into 7-7,5 lt clean water for brush
application and into 12-12,5 lt for spray application, then mix up until no
lumps remain.
— During the application, to store consistency stir mortar frequently. If
the mortar starts to set, do not add more water, simply re-stir to restore
workability.
— Mix only as much material as can be used within 20 minutes. Dispose the
mortar of which pot life is expired.
— Apply the prepared mortar in two coats by masonry brush or power spray
equipment. Apply the second coat perpendicular to first coat, while it is

Surface Preparation Warnings Specific to Material Type to be Used in WaterproofingIn case surfaces ELASTİKOR is to be applied have defects and cracks, these
should be corrected with TAMİRART, KALEMASTİK, KALEPOLYMAS, or
ELASTİKOR that has been brought to a paste consistency by a proportion
of 1 to 2, or 1 to 3 by mixing it with fine sand. The surface should be primed
prior to the application. ELASTİKOR, diluted by water in a volume proportion
of 1 to 4, may be used as primer. No water should be added under any
circumstances to ELASTİKOR unless it is going to be used as primer. Anti-
corrosive primer should be used for metal surfaces.
Application— Apply on to the surface in two or preferably three coats with brush or
roller. Total thickness of application should be 1-1,5 mm.
— Waiting time between the applications of two layers is about 4 hours
depending on the temperature. Additives which are not recommended in
data sheet should not be used.
— Pail should be closed while waiting. Freezing should be avoided.
— Insert a 4,5x4 mm mesh in the first layer of ELASTİKOR when operating
around expansion joints, joints between horizontal and vertical surfaces,
areas with small cracks or places subject to stress. After the mesh has
been laid apply a second layer of ELASTİKOR.
— Do not apply in extremely hot weather, under direct sunlight and when
strong wind, fog, rain or frost is expected. Lower temperatures and
higher relative humidity will lengthen the drying process.
— If ELASTİKOR applied surfaces is subject to foot traffic, cover the surface
with a flooring compound or tiles.
— Use at least S1 type flexible tile adhesive for tiling.
— Sanding ELASTİKOR applied surface before drying improves adhesion
Strength on it.

Preparation And Application
Rules for Waterproofing
Surface PreparationIt is extremely important to ensure that the surfaces on which waterproofing
products will be applied are prepared appropriately. Care should be taken to
ensure the surface is cured. If there are any distortions on the surface, use
the appropriate TAMİRART 5, TAMİRART 30 repair mortar in non-structural
regions, or use TAMİRART S40, which is a structural repair mortar in load
bearing parts to properly smooth out any cracks, gaps, depressions and
similar discrepancies. On which waterproofing is going to be applied should
be smooth, level and preferable glazed with wooden trowel and should
be cleaned of any dirt or debris that may prevent adhesion and damage
waterproofing such as oil, diesel, etc. Priming is recommended with one
of the KALEKİM ASTAR, B-TONE, GYPSASTAR products by taking into
consideration the surface type, absorbency and desired adhesive strength.
Rod (Anchorage support element) Holes These are the holes through which iron rods pass, which are used in fixing
of casts during fortified concrete manufacturing. If there are any plastic
casing pipes and conic cap pieces, these too should be removed. In case
reinforcement iron has been used for fixing and these have been left in the
concrete, the surface should be opened up to 2 cm deep and the irons
should be cut off in a fashion ensuring they are embedded 2 cm deep.
Such types of holes and gaps should be remedied with TAMİRART S40, or
KALEKİM GROUT that do not cause any contraction and have high adhesion
strength prior to the initiation of waterproofing and in accordance with the
dimensions and locations of holes.
Segregation (segregation of cement mortar - aggregate)Segregations, which occur during the manufacturing of concrete, should be
repaired prior to the application of waterproofing layer. As the concrete will
both weaken and also absorb water, pouring conditions should be given as
much attention as the particle size analysis (size distribution) of the material.
The area, which has undergone segregation, should be cleared of loose
particles with mechanical methods and should be repaired with the right
product by selecting from among TAMİRART 5, TAMİRART 30 or
TAMİRART S40, by taking into consideration the size of the area and
resistance requirements.
Stopping Active Water Leakages In case there are active water leakages on the concrete surface where the
application will be performed, the area where the leakage is, should be
sufficiently expanded and filled with rapid setting İZOSTOP waterplug and
the leakage should be halted.
Forming of Chamfers and Rounding of Sharp EdgesIn order to ensure smooth turns of waterproofing materials at joints of all
vertical and horizontal elements chamfers with 45 degrees of inclination
and with a minimum of 8x8 cm width should be made, or else waterproofing
tape, KALEKİM PAH BANDI should be used.
Waterproofing of Structural GroutsIn the waterproofing of structural grouts, KALEPOLYMAS or KALEKİM
WATERPROOFING TAPE should be used depending on the size of the grout.
If required, the grout should be opened and expanded and deepened.
The depth of the grout should be 10-15 mm and its with should be 20-
25 mm. The grout, which is opened and cleaned, should be filled with
KALEPOLYMAS. In case KALEKİM DILATATION BAND is preferred; a band
should be placed on top of the grout, to which application will be performed
and EPOTECH+ should be applied and fixed to the bottom parts and over
the places, where side sections with holes coincide. Hot air should be blown
at places where joining is required, until the band melts and welds into
another dilatation band. In the welding process, a low temperature setting
should be selected that will be sufficient for only melting of the band without
causing any deformation.
Waterproofing Proofing of Different Elements Like Structural Joints, Wide Cracks, Parapets and Chimney BaseAfter the wide cracks are assessed for their size and location, they should
be repaired. If they are not shifting, they can be corrected by using the right
repair mortar. However if there are shifting cracks, these should be insulated
by using KALEPOLYMAS or KALEKİM WATERPROOFING TAPE. The same
situation is also valid for connection points of different elements at parapets
and chimney bases.
The waterproofing in parapets that are not high should be brought above
coping and then turned, while in high parapets they should be fixed with
press profile after being brought up to 30 cm height. As press profile, flat
metal sheets manufactured from aluminum with approximately 5 cm wide
and with a minimum 3 mm thickness should be used and these should be
fixed with a nut or pin at each 25-30 cm. The upper opening part of the press
profile should be insulated with appropriate mastic.

Frequently Encountered
Application Faults
As in other jobs, to avoid loss of labour as well as material losses in
waterproofing applications, the work must be performed carefully in the initial
application stage so that large outlays for repairs in the later stages can be
prevented.
The Application SurfaceA weakness in the waterproofing system can fail if the full contact and
homogenous application of the waterproofing material on the surface cannot
be achieved due to loose, damaged, dusty, greasy or dirty surface. To prevent
such eventuality, surface preparation work must be performed diligently.
Deficiency or defectiveness in repair work and waterproofing of details like
structural joints and wide cracks, is another factor related to the surface
preperation. On highly absorbent or glossy surfaces failing to use a primer
may result in the weakness of the adhesion which may result a failure in
waterproofing.
Selection of MaterialsWhen the waterproofing material is used in areas where it is not
recommended requiring performance specifications different than the
the product can provide, the waterproofing may not be achieved or the
performance may decrease before the end of the expected lifetime.
Product Application InstructionsWhen the application instructions for the products are not complied
with, or the products are used in a manner that is not compliant with the
recommended quantity or method of utilization, then they may not be able to
attain the declared degree of performance and moreover their performance
may start declining earlier.
Coating the Waterproofing ApplicationNot covering the products that are recommended not to be left uncoated
may lead to early corrosion and performance loss of waterproofing. When
coating is being performed, failure to use an adhesive with required degree
of flexibility may lead to an intolerance to the expansion and contraction
taking place on the surface causing deformation of the coating as well as the
waterproofing material.

Glossary
B
Bitumen:A hydrocarbon compound substance found in hard, semi-hard, or liquid form
with a color that shifts between dark brown and black, obtained by natural
settling of crude oil, or through distillation at refineries.
C
Chamfer:Forming of inclined surface in 8 cm x 8 cm size at connection places with the
purpose of ensuring smooth turning of waterproofing cover to be applied on
vertical and horizontal elements that join in a sharp manner.
Cold Joints/ structure joint/work joint:These are joints that form due to important differences in pouring of
concrete at the time such pouring is performed and joints formed due to
lack of adherence of new concrete poured on or on the side of previously
poured concrete.
E
Expansion / Dilatation Joint:In order to decrease the effect of size changes encountered in fortified
concrete structures due to change in temperatures, settling, earthquake and
similar reasons and tensions, the said structure is separated into blocks with
expansion (dilatation) joints.
I
Inclined Roof:A roof with an inclination that is greater than 5%.
M
Mineral Coatings:These are natural slate stones that are easily broken and are in tones of gray,
in small leaf shapes or black colored natural basalt stones that are broken in
small circular particles. They can be painted into desired colors with special
painting methods. These are laminated over the waterproofing cover in
order to protect the waterproofing cover against damaging sunrays and for
decorative purposes.
Modified Bitumen:Bitumen with modified features by adding plastomeric or elastomeric
polymers.
P
Polymer:These are macro composites formed as a result of small, simple molecules
continuously (chain) following each other. It has a vast area of use from the
PVC at the window, to Teflon in kitchen appliances.
The small units forming polymers are called monomer.
Primer:Water or solvent based liquid substance that will be applied to the area
where waterproofing metarial will be implemented prior to the performance
of water waterproofing with the purpose of ensuring better adhesion by
treating the floor.
R
Reverse Roof:These are reverse roof solutions, where membrane is laid under heat
insulation plates that are not affected from water or moisture. Heat
insulation material does not have to be mechanically fixed or completely
glued. A minimum of 50 kg/m2 stream aggregate is spread over protective/
separator geo-textile felt (-200 g/m2) laid on heat insulation layer against
lifting strength of the wind. (Minimum particle size being 20 mm)
S
Segregation:This is the separation of materials forming the concrete and thus the
concrete losing its uniformity. Main reasons are hitting reinforcements and
segregation during pouring of concrete or excessive vibration. This should
be repaired.
Separator layer:The layer that is freely laid between materials with different thermal extension
values in order to prevent them from being damaged when waterproofing
covers are put on top.
Vapor Equalizer:The first coat insulation cover fixed on heat insulation with strip or point
adhesion method to spread throughout the roof the pressure that will
form from water during the vaporizing process, which forms in the heating
insulation layer upon condensing of the water vapor.
Vapor Cutter:The layer allowing water vapor to pass through in the amount calculated and
permitted pursuant to TS 825 standard.
Structural Repair Mortar:It is different from the normal repair mortar due to its adhesive strength and
resistance. It is required to have the said qualities as it is used in bearing
elements such as column, beams and walls. (28 days 50-80 n/mm2)
