THE FOURWAY TEST
OBJECTS OF ROTARY
The object of Rotary is to encourage the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
1. The development of acquintance as an opportunity for service.2. High ethical standards in business and profession; the recognition of worthiness of all
useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life.
4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world of fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
For food, friends, fellowship and the opportunity to serve, we thank You, oh Lord.May we ever be mindful of the needs of others. AMEN.
OBJECTS OF INNER WHEEL
GRACE
To promote true friendship. To encourage the ideals of personal service.
To foster international understanding.
We thank Thee for the light of day.We thank Thee for our food and pray.
That in the Inner Wheel of light. We may serve Thee and do it right.
I’d like to start off by quoting Rotary’s founding member Paul Harris: The foundation upon which Rotary is built is friendship: on no less firm foundation could it have stood.
It is not only a pleasure but also one of the most significant moments of my life to stand in front of you today as we join hands in preparing for a great year ahead. I have no doubt about the success this club will achieve within a timeframe of 365 days. However, I cannot be a successful president without the mentorship and active participation of my fellow Rotarians. I have the responsibility of filling big shoes in the coming year if you just look at Past President André Rheeder’s achievements of a District Merit Award and a gold Presidential Citation to name a few.
It feels like yesterday when I joined Rotary three years ago and now I stand here honoured as the youngest Rotary President
in the world. Rotary is, however, not new to me. From washing dishes at our yearly tea functions, to planting trees for those less privileged, I have gained a lot of knowledge over the years and my respect for this well-established International Organisation has grown immensely.
Rotary for me is about fellowship, fun and Rotarians making a difference one life at a time. This year I will focus on making it enjoyable to attend meetings and projects, I mean who wants to go to boring meetings after all. I will also be focusing on membership development by bringing diverse and dedicated younger people into Rotary to bring new and exciting ideas to the table.
We are this close to eradicate polio and with the Rotary Foundation endowment fund reaching 1 billion dollars and reaching its centenary, it becomes crucial for us to keep supporting the Rotary Foundation.
A bold wise man: Past President André Rheeder once told me that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Therefore, in this coming year I plan to hold a strategic planning session to establish the foundation of our future projects and how we will collectively reach those goals.
Every day that you serve humanity through Rotary, you have the chance to change lives. It may seem small or sometimes irrelevant, but they are not. Everything you do matter. From the gentle touch of an abandoned baby being nurtured to feeding a hungry stomach, you are making a difference for this generation and the generations to come, one life at a time.
I could not have asked for a better team that supports me all the way. This year is going to be fun and full of great projects.
Yours in Rotary ServiceJarred van der Westhuizen
