WSI Members,
As we begin 2020 I am excited with the number of activities planned for the upcoming year. But before I get to that let me say fare-well as president since my two year term is up, and welcome our new president, Ann Rose. Ann has been a WSI board member for a while and most recently lead the Scholarship committee in awarding a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving In-diana high school senior majoring in the arts. She will officially assume her new duties (along with others in new board posi-tions) during our general meeting in March. I thank her for stepping up and know she will do a fantastic job. I also thank those board members who are ‘retiring’ after faithfully serving the WSI. Jim Weaver served as treasurer for a long time (like 6 years), and Linda Halcomb performed wonderfully as our workshop chair. We are all grateful for the time and energy they devoted to the WSI. We also acknowledge and appreci-ate all of the current board members for their thoughtful leader-ship and fervent support of our organization. Our first activity of the year is sure to be a crowd pleas-er. Join us for the general meeting on March 22nd where we will welcome a truly remarkable speaker. We are fortunate to hear from Martin Krause, the retired curator of drawings, prints and photographs (and all works on paper) from the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) at Newfields. Marty has decades of ex-perience working with art, artists, conservators, and historians to present works of art to the public in a way that enhances their context and enlivens their story. Marty will speak to us about the brilliant English artist JMW Turner who transformed watercolor from mere colored drawings into autonomous art works. Marty communicates in an entertaining and engaging style. His willingness to share his knowledge is impressive. I know we will enjoy his talk, and I’m sure he will be glad to an-swer any questions we have. The timing of his talk closely co-incides with the opening of an IMA exhibition featuring Turner’s watercolors. The WSI activities continue throughout the year with our Waycross retreat, the membership show at the Second Presby-terian Church, the juried show at the IMA and a second chance for members to show their artwork in October/November at our WSI Exhibit at the Henry County Art Association. And don’t forget opportunities to learn, create and engage at our work-shops in July and October. So please produce great things, participate in WSI activities, and volunteer if you are able. En-joy the year.

The first WSI general meeting of 2020 will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2020 , at the Nora Library, 8625 Guilford Avenue Indpls. 46240 on the north side of Indy. This is a very short distance from the intersection of N. Me-ridian and 86th St.. Maps are easily accessible on the library website: www.imcpl.org and our website, www.watercolorsocietyindiana.org. At this, our first general meeting of the year, we will begin with a SHORT busi-ness meeting and elect our 2020 slate of officers. We also have an exciting program planned which you won’t want to miss. Marty Krause retired from the IMA as the curator of works on paper (including watercolors) after a long and distinguished career. Works on paper include prints, drawings, and photographs that together account for about half of the 60,000 artworks held by the IMA. Marty’s expertise in art history and his knowledge of artists, techniques and materials used by the artists together with his entertaining and engaging presentation skills provide him with the tools to delight an audience with memorable and meaningful stories. Marty is sure to bring to life the tales of JMW Turner and leave us wanting more. Marty looks forward to seeing you there.

Education/Outreach Update Hamilton East Library in Fishers, IN
The two members of the WSI Board who share the WSI Outreach chair, Karen Fehr and Donna Arnold, taught a 2-hour class at Hamilton East Library in Fishers, IN, on Satur-day afternoon, January 11. An enthusiastic group of 9 people learned how to make pop-up cards. The class included adults, teenagers, and elemen-tary students, each person working at their own level and according to their own interests. Karen and Donna shared many examples of work to demon-strate the techniques and stim-ulate ideas. After an hour of practice making the cuts that allow popped- up shapes, the class was given "good" papers
and spent the remainder of the time making their own cards. Everyone really enjoyed the afternoon and were able to take home their card tucked into an envelope that also included their practice samples for future efforts on their own. We greatly appreciated the wonderful facilities, gener-ous materials and support of the library staff.

Soon Warren Workshop Recap - Linda Halcomb
On October 29, 2019, twenty excited artists sat before Soon Y. Warren with pencils in hand and digital cameras at the ready. Four days later the artists had created two amazing paintings and were clamoring for Soon’s return. Soon’s workshop process is very different from that used by most artists. Every artist paints the same paintings! It is driven by Soon’s lengthy preparation process and chosen teaching style. She loves to capture reflections and favors cut-glass crystal, flowers with dew drops and brilliantly colored fruit. A few weeks before the workshop each artist received three images for each painting - the drawing, the drawing after masking, and the finished painting. Each artist was to com-plete the drawing and masking steps before the workshop started. Shortly before the workshop each artist also received step-by-step painting instructions and images for use during the class and for their permanent records. Soon uses a glazing process and her paintings may have as many as 14 steps.
During the workshop, with the artist’s agreement, Soon would demo using one of the student paintings. Between demonstrations, Soon visited each student providing individu-alized instruction, hands on “how to’s” and encouraging sup-port. She generously answered every question and took time for every artist. Soon also had a fantas-tic sense of humor that removed any stress or tension. This “Sit Down Comedian”, as she called herself, left everyone feeling good about themselves, their work and their investment in this WSI workshop.

Watercolor Society of Indiana 2020 Waycross
“Spring Awakening Retreat: Featuring Stephen Edwards, WSI April 24 - 26, 2020
Our 2020 Waycross Retreat featuring Stephen Edwards, WSI, is a gathering for the purpose of refreshing our “painting” souls, and meeting for a weekend in a peaceful setting to paint together, laugh together, learn together, and share to-gether. This is the opportunity for those who work and can’t attend several days at workshops. It is a time to learn, relax and meet other artists. SEATING IS LIMITED! SIGN UP ASAP!
Spring Awakening Retreat The weekend of April 24 - 26, 2020. Arrive on Friday evening for dinner, fun, and visiting.

Room Options at Waycross You MUST make room reservations with Waycross and pay them directly. Waycross DOES have a cancellation
policy. Send or fax the form and your payment directly to Waycross. Visit the Waycross website for more accommodation information. Waycross honors special meal requests but you must notify them in advance. FYI: Cell phones do not always work at Waycross.
WSI Fee: WSI member - $75 Saturday & Sunday, Non-members - $125 Saturday & Sunday; Saturday only - $50 Member, non-member $75; Sunday only $25 member, $35 non-member. The WSI fee must be paid in full by April 10, 2020. WSI fees cover only the costs of running the retreat.
Stephen Edwards, a WSI signature member, will be our featured artist: Stephen will be teaching some basic painting knowledge he has learned from the British masters he has studied. Using traditional layering of paints, he will be instructing how to maintain vibrant colors throughout artwork but keeping strong compositional design, values, and mood at the forefront as the reason for their paintings. Watercolor is easily made into mud, and his approach to working in watercolor eliminates that situation from occurring (unless he wants it to). Ultimate-ly, the students will learn to control their paint and make it look uncontrolled.
Additional Information from Stephen: The demonstration will be a subject that is related to the Brown County area be it a landscape or something rustic that connects to the area there. The workshop participants may elect to follow along with what Stephen does or bring their own subject that they would like to work on. Anything that is to be painted that weekend needs to (1) be already drawn and ready to go. (2) Simple enough that it can be finished before Sunday. Stephen will supply a drawing that can be used to prepare for the workshop for anyone wanting to follow along with him about a month before the actual event. Stephen’s drawings are not going to be that hard or detailed to draw.
Stephen Edwards, WSI I am primarily a self-taught artist. The artists’ that have influenced my work are the ones that I have taken workshops
with or studied their works. The late Paul J. Sweany and Floyd D. Hopper were contemporary contributors to influence me. N.C. and Andrew Wyeth have been a factor in how I paint and what I paint.
I have been painting in watercolors for over 40 years. It is my preferred medium. But, I also enjoy oils, depending on the subject and what I am trying to convey to the viewer of my art. I have found that the challenge of watercolors gives me a reason to explore the many techniques and subjects its versatility offers up to an artist. It opens more experimental avenues than oils.
My philosophy in painting can be summed up by looking at what appears to be an eclectic collection of finished works. I am always searching for the next subject that will make me grow as an artist even at the age I am. Every painting should be a challenge to get to your next painting. I can’t imagine myself finding a niche and day in and day out painting the same thing. I want to be able look back at each work as a standalone piece that can’t really be group collectively. My mission is to make each work better than the last. If all the history books record about me and my art say “He was a popular painter of his time then,” that satisfies me as an artist.

Capture Light & Atmosphere in Watercolor with Keiko Tanabe, AWS, NWS
This workshop is designed for those who would like to gain a better understanding of methods and techniques to make a water-color painting that is simple yet strong. The goal is to capture the essence of the subject that conveys a certain mood. The process of simplification begins with visualization. In representational art, this ability to see the end result of a painting, through the mind’s eye, is instrumental in realizing an artist’s vision. Through complete, step-by-step demonstrations, Keiko will show you how to take the initial inspiration, through the sim-plification process, to an expressive paint-ing that is strong in composition and content that is full of light and atmosphere.
Subject matters include landscape, cityscape, waterscape and interior. The introduction focuses on the fundamentals including getting to know our materials and seeing things with an artist’s eye. The areas of topic covered in this work-shop include: a preliminary drawing and composition, a variety of techniques in paint application and brush handling, what makes a good design, understanding of relationship of dark and light values, planning & intuition, and how to edit complex visual information.
Keiko will do two demonstrations a day. There will be plenty of one-on-one guidance and a question-and-answer ses-sion on a daily basis. A class critique may be conducted at the end.
