We have many events scheduled during the next few months some of which are listed and described in this Newsletter. Please attend as many as you can. Any time we have any type of a celebration, fundraiser or community event those that attend have a wonderful time while at the same time showing their pride in their Italian Heritage. We should remember that we are a service organization and as such we should participate as much as we can in all our events especially the fundraisers. If you have an issue with transportation to and from an event just contact me or one of the other officers and we will arrange for your transportation. Our Chapter Christmas Party is not set yet. Stay tuned. On a personal note, I would like to thank all of you for the sympathy cards, Mass cards, donations to the scholarship fund, notes letters and phone calls I received following the loss of Marie. I have been very touched by all of them. Marie would have been proud and humbled. Right now the scholarship fund has raised well over $5,000 which is some kind of record. Thank you again. I hope to see you at the next Dinner Meeting this Tuesday October 27th at Juniper's. ~Frank Letter from the Chapter President Waterbury Chapter of UNICO National BIRTHPLACE OF UNICO—OCTOBER 10, 1922 Italian Mayor for the Day Kudos to Tom Buzzelli and his committee for a fantastic Columbus Day Celebration and Italian Mayor for the Day Ceremony. Semina DeLaurentis was a gracious recipient and eloquently spoke about how her Italian household upbringing influences her every day. The Mass was a mixture of solemnity and humor as the Deacon brought in some of Semina’s history with Nunsense into the homily which focused on the integration of our faith, family and values. The weather held-out for the flag raising with a number of community people in attendance and proclamations and personal stories from political dignitaries. Semina’s never-fading smile was evidence of her enjoyment…..I think she even left Mayor O’Leary a note at his desk! The luncheon was well attended and everyone enjoyed the delicious meal served at the new Verdi Restaurant. All in all, it was a great celebration of our Italian- American heritage!!! Italian Mayor for the Day

Kudos to Tom Buzzelli and his committee for a fantastic Columbus Day Celebration and Italian Mayor for the Day Ceremony. A Memorial Mass in honor of the deceased members of the Waterbury Chapter of UNICO National will take place on Sunday, November 8th at 10:30am at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Waterbury. A light reception in the Church Hall will be held immediately following Mass. All current and former members and their families and friends are invited and encouraged to attend.

In addition, for the week of November 8th, the Sacristy Candle at Our Lady of Lourdes will burn in remembrance of our deceased UNICO brothers and sisters. We thank Chairs Lou Gelada & Bianca Daniels for coordinating this effort!

In conjunction with UNICO’s National Day of Community Service, our Chapter will host a Blood Drive for the American Red Cross on Saturday, April 23rd. Location and time to be determined.

We are happy that Pat Varanelli has agreed to serve as Chair for this endeavor. If anyone wants to assist

her committee (Marie Vitarelli & Fran Durante) please contact Pat or send an email to [email protected] and we’ll get your information to her.

This is also a great opportunity for youth to earn their Community Service Hours for school/church/scouts!!!

Pennies for St. Vincent de Paul

National Community Day of Service

Through your generosity, we have already collected over $30 in coins for St. Vincent de Paul Society of Waterbury. Chair Dianne Minardo thanks everyone and sends a reminder to you all to continue to bring your pennies and loose change to the dinner meetings & board meetings.

Call to Action

At the October Board Meeting the Operational and Special Accounts Budget for 2015-2016 were approved. While our administrative fees are being met from our dues and newsletter ads, we have a large deficit in the other account which funds our scholarships, local charities and other special programming.

As of now, the ONLY fundraisers we have are the Corned Beef Dinner and Duck Day Raffle. These activities can NOT bring in enough revenue to support our Chapter’s planned giving and community involvement. We don’t want to give less so the only solution is to hold one or two more fundraisers but that is only possible if someone steps up to the plate.

Over the years we have had successful golf tournaments, bus trips and pancake breakfasts that helped raise money. Great ideas, time consuming but simple to run—however we need NEW BLOOD to get the ball rolling. The Board will lend its support to any idea and we are willing to take a risk but we CAN’T do it alone. It can’t be the same people over and over doing the same things over and over. Change and new initiatives are what we need.

A popular idea we tossed around is a Meatballs & Merlot Fundraiser which Carol Lawson has agreed to chair. Now comes the fun part…….getting volunteers to serve on her committee to coordinate this or another event. To those of you who serve on the Scholarship and Local Charities Committees or any Committee for that matter, this is your time to get more involved with our fundraising events. We can’t give what we don’t have and the only way to get more is by doing more.

Anyone interested in chairing an event or has any ideas that can help should contact our New Initiatives Chair Lou Gelada Jr. Like we said, support will be provided but we can’t do it alone or rely solely on our two existing fundraisers. Thank you!!

The first District Meeting for CT-I will take place on Wednesday, November 4th at 7:00pm at the Minturnese Club in Stamford. Cost for the amazing homemade 3-course meal (including wine) is $30.00.

Everyone—especially officers—is encouraged to attend to see what other Chapters are doing and meet fellow UNICANS. Stamford members have always been supported of our Chapter and it would be nice if we reciprocated their efforts.

Let DG Francine Nido know if you plan to attend at [email protected]. It’s about an hour-drive down Route 8 & 15 and she can fit 3 people in her vehicle if you want to carpool.
