Water Water Everywhere!
Exploring the cycle of water on Earth
The Water Cycle
• The water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth.
• Water can change states among solid, liquid, and gas at various places in the water cycle.
The Water Cycle
• The water cycle is driven by THE SUN.
• The heat from the sun causes water in the ocean (and other bodies of water) to evaporate and rise into the atmosphere.
Water on Earth
• For the most part, the amount of water on Earth stays the same.
• Water just changes states of matter and location.
The “tion” Words!
• Evaporation- when liquid water absorbs heat energy and changes to a gas.
Water in the gas form is called WATER VAPOR.
The “tion” words.
• Condensation- when water vapor loses heat energy and changes back to a liquid.
Ex= fog on mirror / “sweat” on glass
The “tion” words.
• Precipitation- when water falls back to the earth.
• Can fall as rain, snow, sleet or hail.
The “tion” words.
• Transpiration= the release of water vapor through plants and soil into the air.
The Water Cycle
Drawing the Water Cycle
• Use your text book pg 309 to help you draw a quick diagram of the water cycle.
• Label and describe each of the “tion” words AS WELL AS
run-off, ground water,
watershed, divide.
• Draw arrows to represent how water moves through the cycle.
