Pump Stations
Clear water transmission
Clear water transmission mains Total Length – 247,989 m
Complicated existing system:
• Transmission and distribution often mixed (e.g. many direct tappings in transmission mains)
• WTP systems often mixed (e.g. mixing between Warje water and Parvati water at SNDT HLR,
mixing between Holkar water and Chikhali water at Vidya Nagar ESR, mixing between Holkar
transmission and Cantonment distribution at 509 chowk, …)
• Only few flowmeters, often not working (e.g. SNDT MLR pump station, Katraj pump station, …)
All these add to the difficulty in management and control of the system (e.g. impossible to assess losses)

Complaints by users for measurement of air flow
• Intermittent supply-wide variation of supply hours
• Quantity of per capita supply varies substantially, very low in North of Mula-Mutha
River
• Distribution network very old in many areas-high physical losses
• High level of Non Revenue Water
• Inadequate storage capacity
• Reservoirs working as distribution reservoirs, and also feeding other SRs using
distribution mains
• Fast depletion of reservoirs, resulting in high peak factors and small number of
supply hours

Formation of water supply zones
Existing Service Reservoirs • Maximum utilisation of the storage capacity • Identification of areas compatible to hydraulic levels • Ensure terminal pressure of 12m • Select water supply zone which maximises the use of trunk distribution mains
Proposed Service reservoirs • Prospective reservoirs are identified after study of limitations of existing service reservoirs, in terms of
location, capacity and hydraulic levels • The list of such locations was prepared and discussed with PMC • The joint site visits have been conducted, for confirming availability and precise site location • The locations jointly agreed are considered for proposals • Final selection by consultants to optimize the zone formation
Other Guidelines • Zone formation based on geographical location, ground elevation and maximum travel • Nalla as zone limit • Major roads as zone limit • Major physical barriers as zone limits, such as River, Canal, Railway line, Expressway etc. • To avoid major undulations

Clear Water Transmission System
Basic concepts in bulk transmission plan • Maximum utilisation of the existing facilities (SRs, BPTs, sumps, pumps, and transmission
mains)
• Maximum utilisation of gravity-driven systems and minimization of pumping
• Allocation of water from a WTP to SRs which are best suited in terms of o nearness of location o hydraulic level
• Avoid laying of pipelines through the congested areas
• Avoid to an extent possible, long and complex pipe networks

• The storage capacity shall be subdivided in two compartments
• Normal design water depth in GSRs 6,00m
• 5.00m free space to be maintained around GSR
• The reinforcement bar cover in the foundation of minimum 40mm
• Waterstops shall be placed at all the construction joints, either horizontal or vertical
• The top slab shall have minimum rebar cover of at least 30 mm in the lower face
• Impervious plaster layer of 40 mm on internal RCC surfaces in contact with water
• All internal surfaces of the reservoirs shall be covered by an epoxy based paint
• Ventilation openings, every 200 sqm of top slab surface
• The ladders for access to the internal part of the GSRs shall be made with aluminium alloy
Proposed GSR design criteria
• ESR tank normally of circular shape, with a normal water depth of 6 m
• The top slab shall have minimum rebar cover of at least 30 mm in the lower face to ensure
more protection against corrosion of the rebars
• Waterstops at all the construction joints, either horizontal or vertical
• Columns of the supporting structure shall have height generally below 22m
• Stairs for access to the tank shall be preferably built with a conventional staircase resting on a
framework of columns and beams
• Impervious plaster layer of 40 mm, on all the internal RCC surfaces of the tank
• All internal surfaces of the reservoirs shall be covered by an epoxy based paint
• Parapet and handrails protected from corrosion by zinc coating and paint
• Ladders for access to the interior of the tank in aluminium alloy
Proposed ESR design criteria
• Existing distribution network updated in coordination with PMC Engineers
• Existing water supply zones considered for this exercise
• The existing i.e. 2012 water demand used for the analysis
• Peak factor of 1.7 used, considering 24 hours supply
• Results confirm low to very low pressures in many areas
