Water molecules become dense when in cold temperatures. This is seen when water turns to ice or changes from a gas to liquid.
Water molecules become less dense when heat is added. This happens when water changes from ice to liquid or from liquid to gas.
What is happening to the molecules?
Turn and Talk.Draw what you think the molecules look like at each stage of the water cycle.
Discuss
How does the sun affect the water cycle?
Review VocabularyWhat are the different parts of the water
cycle called?
EvaporationWater molecules are heated by the sun and turn into water vapor (gas form).
TranspirationWater molecules in plants and trees are heated by the sun and turn into water vapor (gas form).
CondensationWater molecules are cooled and come together in clouds.
PrecipitationWater molecules form heavy dropletes that come down as rain, sleet, or snow.
Run OffWater molecules that have fallen to Earth from precipitation and run down from mountain and hills to the ocean.
