If you have copper piping to the waterheater, the two copper water pipes can becut with a hacksaw approximately 4" awayfrom where they connect to the waterheater. This will avoid cutting off the pipestoo short. Additional cuts can be made

later if necessary. Disconnect the tempera-ture-pressure relief valve drain line. Whenthe water heater is drained, disconnect thehose from the drain valve. Close the drain

valve. The water heater is now completelydisconnected and ready to be removed.

If you have galvanized pipe to the waterheater, loosen the two galvanized pipeswith a pipe wrench at the union in eachline. Also disconnect the piping remainingto the water heater. These pieces should besaved since they may be needed whenreconnecting the new water heater.Disconnect the temperature-pressure reliefvalve drain line. When the water heater isdrained, disconnect the hose from thedrain valve. Close the drain valve. Thewater heater is now completely disconnect-ed and ready to be removed.

l A, WARNIN G ]The water passing out of the drain valve may be extreme-|ly hot. To avoid being scalded, make sure all connections|are tight and that the water flow is directed away from |

any person.

Q Check again to sure supply ismake the electricalturned "OFF" to the water heater. Then disconnect

the electrical supply connection from the waterheater junction box.

Installation Instructions (cont'd)Facts to Consider Aboutthe Location

You should carefully choose an indoor location for the newwater heater, because the placement is a very important consid-eration for the safety of the occupants in the building and forthe most economical use of the appliance. This water heater isnot intended for outdoor installation.

Whether replacing an old water heater or putting the waterheater in a new location, the following critical points must beobserved.

• The location selected should be indoors as close to and ascentralized with the water piping system as possible. Thiswater heater, as well as all water heaters, will eventually leak.Do not install without adequate drainage provisions wherewater flow will cause damage.

ACAUTIONWATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation ofthe water heater must be accomplishedin sucha mannerthat if the tank or any connectionsshould leak, the flow ofwater will not causedamage to the structure. When suchlocations cannot be avoided, a suitable drain pan shouldbe installed under the water heater. Drain pans are avail-able at your local Sears stores. Such a drain pan must bepiped to an adequate drain. Under no circumstances isthe manufacturer or Sears to be held liable for any waterdamage in connection with this water heater.

_,CAUTIONINSTALLATION IN RESIDENTIAL GARAGES: The Iwater heater must be located and/or protected so it isnot subject to physicaldamage by a mov ng veh € e.

• The location selection must provide adequate clearances forservicing and proper operation of the water heater.

iting on the thermostat, read the "TemperatureiRegu ation" section in this manual.

The illustration shows the attachment of the water _iping to thewater heater. The water heater is equipped with ¾ water con-nections.

If a water heater is installed in a closed water supply system;such as one having a back-flow preventer, check valve, watermeter with a check valve, etc. in the cold water supply; meansshall be provided to controt thermal expansion. Contact thelocal utility or Sears Service Center on how to control thissituation.

NOTE: If using copper tubing, solder tubing to an adapterbefore attaching the adapter to the cold water inlet connec-tion. Do not solder the cold water supply line directly to thecold water inlet. It will harm the dip tube and damage thetank.

• Look at the top cover of the water heater. The hot water out-let is marked hot. Put two or three turns of teflon tape aroundthe threaded end of the threaded-to-sweat coupling andaround both ends of the _" threaded nipple. Using flexibleconnectors, connect the hot water pipe to the hot water outletof the water heater.

Installation Instructions (cont'd)Temperature-PressureRelief Valve

AWARNING IAt the time of manufacture thiswater heater wasprovidedwith a combinationtemperature-pressures relief valve cer-tified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory thatmaintainsperiodicinspectionof productionof listedequip-ment or materials, as meeting the requirements for ReliefValves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devicesfor Hot WaterSupplySystems, and the latest edition of ANSI Z21.22 andthe code requirements of ASME. If replaced, the valvemust meet the requirements of local codes, but not lessthan a combination temperature and pressurerelief valvecertified as meeting the requirements for Relief ValvesandAutomatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot Water SupplySystems, ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally recognized testinglaboratory that maintainsperiodicinspectionof productionof listedequipment or materials. The valve must be marked with a maximum set pressurenot to exceed the marked hydrostaticworking pressureofthe water heater (150 Ibs./sq.in.) and a dischargecapacitynot lessthan the water heater input rate as shownon themodel rating plate. (Electric heaters - watts divided by1000x 3415 equal BTU/Hr. rate.)Your localjurisdictionalauthority, while mandatingthe useof a temperature-pressure relief valve complying withANSI Z21.22 andASME, may require a valve model differ-ent from the one furnishedwith the water heater.Compliancewith suchlocal requirements must be satisfiedby the installer or end user of the water heater with alocally prescribed temperature-pressure relief valveinstalled in the designatedopeningin the water heater inplaceof the factory furnishedvalve. For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valvemust not be removed from it's designated opening orplugged. The temperature-pressure relief valve must be installeddirectly into the fitting of the water heater designatedforthe relief valve. Positionthe valve downward and providetubing so that any dischargewill exit only within 6 inchesabove,or at any distancebelow the structural floor. Be cer-tain that no contact is made with any live electrical part. The dischargeopening must not be blockedor reduced insize under any circumstances. Excessivelength, over 30feet, or useof more than four elbowscan causerestrictionand reducethe dischargecapacityof the valve. No valve or other obstruction is to be placed between therelief valve and the tank. Do not connecttubing directly todischargedrain unlessa 6" air gap is provided. To preventbodily injury, hazard to life, or property damage, the reliefvalve must be allowed to discharge water in quantitiesshould circumstancesdemand. If the dischargepipe is notconnected to a drain or other suitable means, the waterflow may causeproperty damage. The DischargePipe:

Must not be smaller in size than the outlet pipe size ofthe valve, or have any reducing couplings or otherrestriction.Must not be pluggedor blocked.Must be of material listedfor hot water distribution.Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage ofboth the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the dis-chargepipe.Mustterminate at an adequatedrain.Mustnot haveany valvebetweenthe raliefvalveandtank.

AWARNING

The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manuallyoperated at least once a year. Caution should be taken toensure that (I) no one is in front of or around the outletof the temperature-pressure relief valve discharge line, and (2) the water manually dischargedwill not cause anybodily injury or property damage becausethe water maybe extremely hot.If after manuallyoperating the valve, it failsto completelyreset and continues to release water, immediately, closethe cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the drain-ing instructions, and replace the temperature-pressurerelief valve with a new one.

Troubleshooting GuideStart Up Conditions

THERMAL EXPANSION

Water supply systems may, because of such events as high linepressure, f[equent cut-offs, the effects of water hammer amongothers, have installed devices such as pressure reducing valves, check valves, back flowpreventers, etc._to control these types ofproblems. When these devices are not equipped with an internalby-pass, and no other measures are taken, the devices cause thewater system to be closed. As water is heated, it expands (ther-mal expansion) and closed systems do not allow for the expan-sion of heated water.

The water within the water heater tank expands as it is heated andincreases the pressure of the water system. If the relieving _oint ofthe water heater s temperature-pressure relief valve is reached, thevalve will relieve the excesspressure. The tempera_premurerelief valve is not intendedfor the constant relief of thermalexpansion. This is an unacceptable condition and must be cor-rected.

It is recommended that any devices installed which could create adosed system have a by-pass and/or the system have an expan-sion tank to relieve the pressure built by thermal expansion.Thermal expansion tanks are available from Sears stores andthrough the Sears Service Centers. Contact the local plumbinginspector, water supplier and/or the Sears Service Center forassistance in controlling these situations.

Troubleshooting Guide (cont'd)Operational Conditions HIGH TEMPERATURE SHUT OFF SYSTEM

SMELLY WATER The water heater has a high limit shut off system with a resetbutton located on the thermostat.

In each water heater there is installed at least one anode rod (seeparts section) for corrosion protection of the tank. Certain waterconditions will cause a reaction between this rod and the water.

The most common complaint associated with the anode rod isone of a rotten egg smell, This odor is derived from hydrogensulfide gas dissolved in the water. The smell is the result of fourfactors which must all be present for the odor to develop:• a concentration of sulfate in the supply water,• litde or no dissolved oxygen in the water.• a sulfate reducing bacteria within the water heater. (This

harmless bacteria is non-toxic to humans.)• an excess of active hydrogen in the tank, This is caused by the

corrosion protective action of the anode.

Smelly water may be eliminated or reduced in some water heater

models by replacing the anode(s) with one of less active material, and then ehJorinating the water heater tank and all hot waterlines. Contact the local Sears Service Center for further informa-

tion concerning an Anode Replacement Kit #9001453 and thisChlorination Treatment.

If the smelly water persists after the anode replacement and chlo-rination treatment, we can only suggest that continuous chlori-nation and filtering conditioning equipment be considered toeliminate the water problem.

Do. not remove the anode leaving the tank unprotected. Bydomg so, all warranty on the water heater tank is voided.

Follow the resetting instructions which refer to the high limitbehind the access panel.

• Before beginning, turn "OFF" electrical power supply to thewater heater.

A WARNINGHAZARD OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK! Beforeremoving any access panels or servicing the waterheater, make sure the electrical supply is turned"OFF" to the water heater• Failure to do this couldresult in DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, ORPROPERTY DAMAGE•

"AIR" IN HOT WATER FAUCETS

AWARNINGHYDROGEN GAS: Hydrogen gas can be produced ina hot water system that has not been used for a long)eriod of time (generally two weeks or more)•Hydrogen gas is extremely flammable and explosive. To prevent the possibility of injury under these condi-tions, we recommend the hot water faucet beopened for several minutes at the kitchen sink beforeany electrical appliances which are connected to thehot water system are used (such as a dishwasher orwashing machine). If hydrogen gas is present, therewill probably be an unusual sound similar to airescaping through the pipe as the hot water faucet isopened. There must be no smoking or open flamenear the faucet at the time it is open.

• Remove the two screws securing the access panel and removepanel.

• Open the flap of insulation to expose the opening.

• Reset the high limit by pushing in the red buttonmarked _RESET'.

NOT ENOUGH OR NO HOT WATER

• In a new installation, the water heater may not be properlyconnected. Make sure the cold water supply valve is open.Review and check piping installation. Make sure that the coldwater line is connected to the cold water inlet to the waterheater and the hot water line to the hot water outlet on thewater heater.

• Make sure the dectrical supply to the water heater is "ONL

• Check for loose or blown fuses in your water heater circuit.Circuit breakers weaken with age and may not handle theirrated load and should be replaced.

• Make certain the disconnect switch, if used, is in the "ON"position.

• Check m see the electric service to your house has not beeninterrupted. If this is the case, contact the local dectric utility.

• Are the thermostats set to the desired temperature? See"TemperatureRegulation"section.

• If you had experienced very hot water and now no hot water, the problem may be due to the high temperature shut offs,_tem. See "High Temperature Shut Off System" in theTroubleshooting section.

• During very cold weather, the incoming water will also becolder and it will require a longer time to become heated.

• The hot water usage may exceed the capacity of the waterheater. If so, wait for the water heater to recover afterabnormal demand. Also examine pipes and faucets for possiblewater leaks.

• If you can not determine the problem, then call the SearsService Department.
