Earth’s Water Supply
2 Groups of Fresh Water1.) Surface (above ground)
2.) Ground (below the ground surface)
Surface Water• Lakes• Ponds• Rivers• Streams/Creeks• Wetlands (marshes, bogs, swamps, sloughs)• Reservoirs
2. Ground Water
• Located beneath the Earth’s surface in spaces between soil and rocks
• Aquifer – underground layer of rock this is saturated with water down to the impermeable rock layer
• Water Table – Top of saturated layer, rises and falls depending on amount of recharge (adding water) and discharge (water removal)
Where is Ground Water Stored?
Water is a Renewable Resource
Terms to Know and Relate:
• Precipitation• Condensation• Evaporation• Transpiration• Sublimation• Surface Runoff• Infiltration• Percolation• Aquifer
• Water storage in atmosphere• Condensation * Evaporation(2) * Spring• *Freshwater Storage • Water storage in oceans• Surface runoff• Snowmelt runoff to streams• Transpiration (2)• Sublimation• Precipitation• Infiltration• Ground water Discharge• Water Storage in Ice and Snow
