DESCRIPTION

The U@marenostrum project was presented at the AER Summer school that took place from 24 to 29 August 2009 in Valencia, Spain under the topic "Water, engagement for our future". The aim of the Summer Schools was to raise awareness concerning the developments affecting water resources, their availability and their management and provide regional administrations with the opportunity to gather best practice in this field from their European counterparts and to develop innovative approaches.

• U@marenostrum is a two year EU co-financed project that will engage citizens and local actors (community groups, associations etc.) from the Mediterranean costal zones in decision-making processes with the help of ICT and GIS;

• The project will involve the regions of the French Riviera, Valencia and Ionian Islands;

• The deliverable will be an open-source software solution and methodology to help local decision-makers to improve the quality, legitimacy and transparency of their policies in the eyes of the citizens;

• citizens will become familiar and involved in the functioning of democratic decision making processes and monitor the implementation of the EU environmental law specifically water management and protection in their regions;

• The idea of Public Participation GIS revolves around the concept of public participation in the use of spatial data leading to increased community involvement in policy-setting and decision-making.

The U@Marenostrum platform will represent a secure environment through which policy makers will able to engage with citizens on the decision making process through the use of a geospatial data enriched interface.

ICT for environmental awareness & collaboration

Integrated components:

• The Gov2demoss open source citizen collaboration platform;

• Mapserver an Open Source platform for publishing spatial data and interactive mapping applications to the web;

• And Social networking tools such as facebook and twitter.
