BRIAN BASHAM/DL NEWSPAPERSDave and Melissa Opsahl are co-admirals for this year’s Northwest Water Carnival.

By THRESSA JOHNSONDetroit Lakes Newspapers

As any honorable title does, being named admiral to the Northwest Water Carnival comes with plenty of responsibilities, quite a few phone calls and a little bit of chaos. This year’s co-admirals get to share both the duty and the distinction. Dave and Melissa Opsahl have spent the past year cultivating their abilities to juggle work, family and coordinating the 74th year of one of summer’s favorite spectacles. Not knowing what to expect at the outset, the Op-

sahls, who are parents to a son and a daughter, have found heading the event a decidedly new experience. “You should do this one year, and then do it a sec-ond year — the second would be easy,” Dave said with a smile. Dave, who works with Centrol Crop Consulting, has been a member of the Jaycees for eight years. Me-lissa, a pharmacist, joined the group five years ago. “It’s always spinning in the back of my head,” Me-lissa said of the details that need to be taken care of in order for Water Carnival to be a swimming success.

By THRESSA JOHNSONDetroit Lakes Newspapers Any genuine Laker knows that July is home to sev-eral key pieces of summer in Detroit Lakes: crowded streets and sparkling fireworks displays in celebra-tion of the 4th, scads of sunshine glittering over sandy beaches and rippling waters, plenty of opportunities to catch music in outdoor venues, and…the Northwest Water Carnival. The DL Jaycees are in their 74th year putting on the event, this time under the leadership of co-admirals Dave and Melissa Opsahl. Beginning on Friday, July 10, and running through Sunday, July 19, Detroit Lakes will play host to everyone’s favorite events, from the Great Admiral’s Hat Hunt to the Parade of the North-west, along with several new additions. As always, the Water Carnival epitomizes summer in Detroit Lakes — loads of sun, all sorts of fun, and, really, something for everyone. For the athletic Laker, Friday kicks off with Habitat for Humanity’s 4th Annual Golf Scramble, and contin-ues into the Water Carnival Swim, the Fun Run/Walk, and the return of the Midsummer Bike Tour. More

Beer Tasting/Home Brew Contest. The Knights of Co-lumbus will also be serving a pancake breakfast during a Fly-in at the DL Airport. The Fly-in is new to the Car-nival this year, as is the Jaycee Geocache and the polka to be held in the Pavilion. Throughout the day and evening on Saturday, July 18, the Pavilion’s Beer Garden will house music acts. Beginning at 10 a.m. and running to midnight, Island Time, Show Tyme DJ Service, Tim Eggebraaten and October Road will provide the soundtrack for all of the day’s events. Most of the weeks’ excitement can be accessed by wearing your 74th Annual Northwest Water Carnival button, and with Button Daze running downtown from Sunday to Sunday, there’s no reason not to invest those $2 toward making July one of the most exciting months to be in Detroit Lakes. A full schedule of events, dates, times, locations, con-tacts, and anything else you might need to make Water Carnival more accessible and enjoyable can be found online at www.dlwatercarnival.com. Whether you’re wading into Water Carnival for the first time or you’ve been diving in for years, make a splash and enjoy all that it has to offer.

competitive athletes might enjoy the Open Swim Meet or the All-Comers Track Meet. If you’d rather stay off the field and play spectator, check out the DL Angels baseball game, the Softball Tournament, or the Annual Legion Baseball Classic. Those who are more inclined toward the theatrical should start in on Friday night with the Miss North-west Pageant, and then skip over to Monday’s Junior Pageant. This year there will also be a Talent Show, a piano performance by Kathryn Knuttila, and two eve-ning showings of “The Great Trailer Park Musical.” The kids will love getting soaked with Wednesday’s Water Fights and Water Balloon Toss, and they prob-ably won’t mind sticking around to partake in the Ice Cream Social. Saturday signifies all sorts of fun, from the Pet & Doll Parade, Family Picnic, Kid’s Show and Sand Treasure Dig, to a variety of games, a Bean Bag Tournament, the Frog Jump and Turtle Race and a Sand Castle Building Contest. The annual Demolition Derby will be held at the Fairgrounds; if you want to rev up your taste buds, too, visit the local Farmer’s Market, make sure to be at the Pavilion for the Chili and Salsa Cookoff, and — if your ID allows it — head over to Zorbaz on Thursday for the

Fancy a treasure hunt? Try geocachingBy THRESSA JOHNSONDetroit Lakes Newspapers

Anyone up for a worldwide treasure hunt? The Wa-ter Carnival can quench your thirst for a global search with the Jaycee Geocache. But…what is geocaching? According to www.geo-caching.com, the Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site, it’s simply “a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure.” To become a geocacher, all you need is a GPS unit, Internet access and a sense of adventure. Across the globe, geocaches — the hidden treasure of the increasingly popular pastime — are hidden, their coordinates are placed online, and they are considered fair game for the caching exchange progress. Anyone who seeks out and finds a cache must leave behind an item of equal or greater value, write about it in the cache logbook that will accompany the object,

geocaching’s appeal. Additionally, geocaching can very easily turn into a year-round hobby, becoming an entertainment that lasts well beyond Water Carnival week. However, every good explorer knows that not just any trash can be another’s treasure. In addition to its mer-its as an amusement, geocaching went environmental in 2002 with its Cache In Trash Out initiative. Its Web site suggests that geocachers use their time out search-ing as an opportunity to not only keep the area clean, but pick up any nearby garbage in a simple volunteer effort to “preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources.” Another fantastic way to enjoy the lakes area during Water Carnival, geocaching is a fresh addition to the usual events that anyone with an appetite for adventure needs to check out.

By THRESSA JOHNSONDetroit Lakes Newspapers

Compliments of Domres Theatricals, this year’s Water Carnival has a new component play-ing at the Historic Holmes Theatre. Seven regional actors and actresses will be ascending the stage to perform “The Great American Trailer Park Musical,” complete in all its outrageous, raunchy glory. When the show, written by first-time playwrights David Nehls and Betsy Kelso, first opened off-Broadway in 2005, it saw an immediate cult following and many sold-out performances. Talkin’ Broadway, the Internet’s own theatre authority, called it “the theatrical equivalent of a bag of Doritos,” claiming “you can’t get enough.” New Jersey’s Star Ledger named it “the musical comedy equivalent of cheese fries…a cheerfully trashy treat that offers plenty of fin-ger lickin’ fun.” The Holmes Theatre’s Web site has deemed it an “irreverent but heartwarm-ing tribute to Americana.” With reviews of such caliber — and food references of such temptation — who would pass by the opportunity to witness “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” firsthand? The show follows the escapades of Armadillo Acres, the most prestigious mobile home community in Florida. When a stripper fleeing from her ex-boyfriend winds up in the trailer park, and in the middle of a married couple’s relationship, drama, stereotypes and satire en-sue, narrated in song by three campy trailer park gals. Susan Boyd, who has been working with the promotional aspect of the production, knows musical theatre well from years of attendance. She calls the show’s music, which spans Amer-ican styles from rock to country to disco, “amazing,” believing the show itself to be “the best you’ll see as far as music.” Although the musical is recommended only for mature audiences, its intent isn’t to offend, and even though character clichés are used, they are presented in a fresh, witty manner. “It’s a fun show for many reasons,” Boyd said, referencing the musical’s fun approach, sat-ire and loveable characters. Boyd also noted that she’s hoping the inclusion of a musical into Water Carnival week will be made annual. Rebecca Meyer-Larson is directing the show, which will move on to the Fargo Theatre after two nights in Detroit Lakes. Chris Olson is the vocal director, and Ryan Domres is producing and choreographing. The show will be performed at 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, and Monday, July 13, at the His-toric Holmes Theatre. Wearing your Northwest Water Carnival Button will win you $2 off the ticket price. “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” is a terrific opportunity to witness hilarious song and dance numbers, chortle at an ample supply of clever punchlines and glimpse some of the region’s talent…unless, of course, you’re nutritionally opposed to cheese fries and Dor-itos.

and then log the excitement on the Web site. Caches can be almost anything — which is precisely what makes the search-and-discovery a thrill. The idea for including geocaching in this year’s Wa-ter Carnival came from the admirals’ daughter, Rachel Opsahl, who participated in the treasure hunt through her junior high this past year. On Saturday, July 11, at 9 a.m., there will be an in-formation booth set up at the Pavilion to assist those interested in joining the search. Anyone wishing to participate can view local geocache sites online. From there, Jaycee Geocaching will run throughout the week. “Go out an enjoy it whenever,” Melissa Opsahl said. Although she has never tried geocaching herself, she sees the Water Carnival as an ideal opportunity to give it a chance. “It’s something that everyone can do,” she said of

Holmes Theatre to host cult musical

BRIAN BASHAM/DL NEWSPAPERS Send in the clowns… these clowns went fishing for laughs at last year’s Parade of the Northwest, which is the culminating event of each year’s water carnival. The 2009 parade is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, and will include well over 100 entries to entertain the thousands of parade goers who line up along both sides of Washington Avenue. The Parade of the Northwest is considered one of the state’s top five parades.

The answer might not be obvious, but this year’s carnival will fill the void with a polka at the Pavilion. “We were trying to think of an event for Friday night,” Co-Admiral Melissa Opsahl said. “And we were thinking of the segments of the com-munity that we want to reach out to.” Since so much of the Water Carnival is aimed to-ward family events, Opsahl wanted to offer a night for “more experienced” Detroit Lakes residents. Putting together a polka seemed like a splendid way to do so. On Friday, July 17, from 7 to 11 p.m., Matt Hodek and the Dakota Dutchmen will be jammin’ out the tunes at the Pavilion. Meanwhile, the Women of Today will be serving pie and ice cream. Entrance costs $5. Opsahl wanted the polka to be “tied into the Pavil-ion” and its history, hoping that those who attend will recall dances they’ve been to there before. “It was a nos-talgic type of idea,” she said. With the polka’s success still to be determined, Op-sahl hopes that it will become an annual Water Carni-val Event. Regardless of your dancing skill, drop by the Pavil-ion Friday night to enjoy desert and some marvelous music.

To make this summer’s Water Carnival experience truly take off, head over to the DL Airport on Saturday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to noon. Not only will there be pancakes — send your thanks to the Knights of Columbus — but a fly-in that’s certain to enter-tain kids and adults alike. The airport is putting on the fly-in to aid in “aviation awareness in the commu-nity,” said Paul Highness of Detroit Lakes Aviation. Several airplanes will be on display, including a mustang, a dc3, a MeritCare Life-Flight, one of the State Patrol’s planes and a firefighter airplane. Audiences will also be captivated by the contests taking place Saturday. There will be a short field takeoff contest, in which pilots will compete to take off using the shortest stretch of runway possible. Also, there will be a flower bag drop: planes will attempt to land the flowers that they drop onto a target set up on the ground. Weather permitting, the Fargo Skydiving Club may also make an appearance at the fly-in. If all goes well, the airport could make the fly-in an annual event. But for this year, “pray the weather’s nice,” Highness said with a smile.

BRIAN BASHAM/DL NEWSPAPERSTens of thousands of Detroit Lakes visitors line up and down Washington Avenue for the Parade of the Northwest, held on the last Sunday of the water carnival.

“One of the main things that we have to focus on to make it happen is donations and funding.” “It’s amazing what some of the businesses in our area do,” Dave added. “It’s nice.” With local businesses fully behind the Water Carnival, the Opsahls’ job is made significantly smoother. Still, Melissa has found that being a co-admiral has stretched her comfort zone. “I’m not a barterer,” she said, referring to the many phone calls she’s had to make throughout the past several months. “For me it’s a learning experience — having a lot of conversations and trying to make it win-win.” Conversely, Dave has found that aspect of the position well suited to his personal-ity. “I like visiting with people, calling around, being on the phone,” he said. Another crucial task that falls to a Water Carnival admiral is contributing a new event to the week’s lineup. This summer, Dave and Melissa are introducing a polka at the Pavilion and a Jay-cee Geocache. Also new this year are the Fly-in at the DL Airport and a musical at the Holmes Theatre. Annual favorites will, of course, also return this year. Dave mentioned that the number of people in attendance has increased dramatically since adding Saturday night’s Bash on the Beach four years ago. “We had 800 people on the beach last year,” he said. The Parade of the Northwest, as well, is an attraction in its own right. “The parade has become a tradition for many families,” Melissa said, adding that a lot of former Detroit Lakes residents bring their families back into town for Sun-day’s main event, staking out their spots along the parade route early in the morn-ing. “It’s really good for the community,” she said. “It’s a benefit to the whole area.” With this year’s array of activity, all the time, toil, and telephone calls that the couple has put into the 74th Northwest Water Carnival will undoubtedly be worth it once the week is underway.
