(21) Midland Vision - December 2009 Water Based Surface Coatings For PVC Over the last few months Zobel Chemie GmbH, a German manufacturer of water based surface coatings and their distributor Universal Finishing Systems, have actively been introducing their Zowoplast® 1K PUR water based surface coatings for PVC into the UK market. Zowoplast® has been sold in other parts of the world successfully for several years, providing customers with an almost unlimited variation in colour and special textured effects. The metallic and pearl effect surface coatings complete and highlight the product range. The excellent weathering properties, scratch resistance and light fastness are equal to solvent based paints and foiled surfaces, guarantee a long life, providing colour and increased quality to the PVC surface it's applied to. A further benefit from changing from solvent to water based surface coatings are the ECO-friendly aspects. There are no solvent fumes in the factory, no hazardous goods to dispose of, and no special warehousing facilities required. "During the last 6 months we have visited numerous customers who have shown great interest in using Zowoplast® as an alternative to solvent based surface coatings and foils. With roughly 70% of the manufactured windows in the UK being PVC, the potential is considerable. Not only can customers benefit from the wide range of colours, gloss levels and textures, but also the simplicity of the surface coating system when applying the paint to the profiles during production. This makes it one of a kind." comments Ben Burgess, Zobel`s Area Sales Manager for the UK. For the last thing he wants is to add inches to his waistline as he departs on New Year's Day for a 190 mile bike ride across India to help raise £100,000 for Heal, a charity that supports the country's orphaned and underprivileged children. Matthew, the UK organiser of Cycle India is passionate about the event. He explained the purpose of the ride and the goals of the charity: "At present there are 22 people from the UK, and 11 people from the USA taking part. With those joining Heal from India there should be around 40 people cycling for this worthwhile cause," he explained. "The charity supports orphaned and underprivileged children in the State of Andhra Pradesh in the East of the country, providing education and healthcare for more than 1,000 kids. But our goal is to take care of 15,000 children by 2015. It's an ambitious goal but we'll get there." Heal was started in 1992 by Dr Koneru Prasad, a doctor from Peterborough, UK who donated his family home in Guntur, India to the fledgling charity. All funds raised will go towards building a new residential school for children from deprived backgrounds in Vijayawada, the birthplace Dr Prasad. The school will be the charity’s most ambitious project to date, with the intention of creating a happy and safe learning environment for over 1000 children. Heal currently supports projects in Guntur, Vijayawada and Bhadrachalam but is looking to develop many more projects. Now in its 17th year, HEAL - a UK registered charity - is committed to providing shelter, support, education and healthcare for needy children. As a small charity they are committed to ensuring that donations are not wasted on administrative costs, such as advertising and salaries. They achieve this because they have no administrative office and no paid administrative staff. "All the cyclists taking part are currently working hard, both training for the event and fundraising for the charity," added Matthew. "The reward for all this effort is cycling through the beautiful scenery of the Coorg, and afterwards visiting the Heal Children's Village in Guntur to meet the kids, which is really the highlight of the trip and the thing that makes it all worthwhile. CWG Choices has just launched the Kömmerling Kom-fit cavity closer which hasalready proved hugely successful for national house builders such asPersimmon, Taylor Wimpey and David Wilson Homes, but also forsmaller house builders. The Kom-fit cavity closer allowsfor windows and doors to be fitted from the inside

andmeets the

latest insulation andventilation requirementsfor the BuildingRegulations. It is designedto be used with theKömmerling and KBE windowand door systems and given itswidespread use throughout the housebuilding sector there are few cavity closers on the market which can claim the same levels ofsuccess.

A built in co-extruded weatherseal on the cavity closer keeps the elements out, whilst a built inadhesive seal helps hold the window/door in position during fixing. Suitable for cavities from50mm to 100mm it also incorporates an integrated external finishing trim to minimise the use ofsilicone

Jason Wilder, Joint MD at CWG Choices comments: "It is our view that this is the best cavitycloser on the market. It is cost effective, proven and supplied ready for use and couldn't be moreeasy to use. When supplied with a their window and door we can offer a one-stop shop forinstallers working in the house building sector."

Photovotaic ArrayFor RetirementDevelopment

Mayford Grange, a new development in Surrey byRetirement Villages Ltd, has been equipped with aphotovoltaic system employing modules that willprovide the 46 apartments in the village with 'free'electrical power throughout the year. At the requestof the architects, the array of 106 x 170Wp PVmodules and 3 inverters (which convert the DC current generated from sunlight into AC current) wasdesigned as a free-standing, ground-mounted system by Middlesex-based KN Renewable EnergyLtd, a member of the partner network. The PV modules were specified because of their provenquality and their efficiency in use. Their integral glass/tedlar laminate ensures maximum operationallife by providing effective, long-term protection against the weather.

The whole system, including structural design and framework, lightning protection and specialistrelay protection, was installed and commissioned in just two weeks.

Already fully operational, the system is expected to generate approximately 16,000 kilowatt hoursof electricity per annum, which will mean a major reduction in electricity bills for the owners ofapartments at Mayford Grange, one of eleven sites run by Retirement Villages Ltd for people aged55 and over.
