Resurrection Markers for the Family of Anson and Sarah (Martin) Hoover – 2015

Book III: Markers Found in Ontario, Canada Jesus said, “Do not be amazed . . . for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out — those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned” (John 5:28-29).

Our Hoover family, and many others, success-fully negotiated the long trek from Pennsylvania toUpper Canada at the end of the 1700s (right).

Rainham – Haldimand County, ON

Jacob Huber (1728-1810) son of Ulrich Huber of the Pequea Valley, Lancaster County, PA, married Barbara Schenk (1735-1818), daughter of Jacob Schenk, also from the PequeaValley. For a few years they lived near Strasburg, Lancaster County, then, crossing the Susquehanna, they settled just west of the town

of York, in York County, Pennsylvania. During the 1790s Jacob and Barbara's son, David (still single) rode to Canada to find a new home in British territory. Jacob and Barbara, with some of the married children and other familiesfollowed.

Jacob and Barbara's youngest son, Daniel, married Elizabeth Miller and settled along Lake Erie (above), at the shore of Stony Creek. Jacob and Barbara, apparently, lived with them.

The original Daniel Hoover house was a two-story log cabin. The farm house (left and upper left) was built over it. But whenit suffered a serious fire in 1994, the logs were rescued and restored (above), north of Selkirk.

David Hoover (1774-1846), son of Jacob and Barbara (Schenk) Hoover, married Elizabeth Steiner (1771-1835) daughter of Isaac and Anna Steiner of York County, Pennsylvania. They cleared the Hoover's Point farm and built the first plank house and barn.

The plank house (right) was still standing until recent times. David's son, Deacon Jacob Hoover, with his wife Elizabeth Brick still lived here in their retirement. But in the late 1800s,their son, Daniel and Catherine (Moyer) Hoover, built a new house and barn across Lakeshore Road (visible below and on the lower right). Their son A. Ervin Hoover with his wife Phoebe Hallman lived here in the early 1900s.

Jacob Hoover (1806-1872), son of David and Elisabeth (Stoner) Hoover, married Elizabeth Brick (1817-1897) an immigrant from the Ruhrgebiet along the Rhein, in Germany. Elisabeth came as a Catholic. Her family name, Brech, was written either Brick or Brock. Sir Isaac Brock, it is said, was her father's brother or cousin. Her younger brother, Nicholas Brick, lived with her and her husband Jacob Hoover.
