VOL. II KANSAS CIT\, MO., THURSDAY, NOV. 17, 1910 NO. 28 WATCH AND PRAY Extracts from Mr. Fillmore’s Sunday morning talk in Unity Auditorium, No- vember 13, 1910. Time was, in the history of religion, when it was considered sacrilegious to in- quire into the law of prayer, to investi- gate the methods by which God communed with man. But as we have gone on in de- velopment, we have come to a fuller un- derstanding of what man is, and his re- lation to the universal Law. God never trusts anything to chance. Law is exact, undeviating—yesterday, today, and for- ever the same. The Law must pertain to every thought. If there is a law of gravity, it must be a law of Spirit. What we see in the outer must be a hint of the inner, invisible Law, and that is primarily of mind. Conscious- ness enters into everything, and is funda- mental in mind. Why is it that some people get answers to prayer and others fail? We read in the Scriptures of won- derful demonstrations through the power of the Spirit, and in our midst today are mighty evidences of the same poVer. If the Law is universal there must be a way to observe it and get the same results oth- ers have obtained. It all depends upon consciousness. The investigation of prayer is holy ground. It is a place whereon, metaphor- ically speaking, we must take off our shoes—that is, divest the material under- standing of its material limitations. If we investigate in Spirit, as Jesus Christ taught, we shall find out that all that enters into success in any undertak- ing, enters into success in prayer. All through the Scriptures the different at- titudes of mind necessary in prayer are pointed out. We are told to be instant in prayer, to pray with the Spirit, pray in understanding. We have thought that prayer was something we could go at in any old way at any old time. But to get results, we must pray with persistence and understanding, and with faith. This practice establishes a consciousness where doubt cannot enter. Jesus Christ was in this consciousness all the time. And is it possible for the ordinary man? Yes. But he must watch and pray. He must not only pray; he must watch also. You might ask. What is man? and you would get a million answers if you asked a million people. If you ask one who has spiritual understanding he would say that man is mind, and his demonstration of that which we call I am, or the real self, will depend upon the consciousness which the “I” establishes. The inner and the outer are related through consciousness, and the more you can fill your conscious- ness with the understanding of the right relation of things, the stronger and better man you will be. Every thought you have sinks back and becomes part of the subconscious. Then watch your thoughts as carefully as the shepherd watches his flock, and keep out the wolves, the devouring thoughts. The wolves are the fear thoughts and the thoughts of lack, and every thought that is adverse. You cannot build up the God- consciousness very fast if you continually allow devouring, destructive thoughts to enter your mind. Begin now to watch and pray, and keep it up. If you do you will find yourself daily becoming more firmly established in that consciousness where you are in constant communion with God, and your prayers will be answered.

WATCH AND PRAY

E x trac ts from M r. F illm ore’s S unday m orning ta lk in U nity A uditorium , N ovem ber 13, 1910.

Tim e was, in the h isto ry of religion, when it was considered sacrilegious to inquire into the law of p ray e r, to investig a te the m ethods by which God communed w ith man. B u t as we have gone on in developm ent, we have come to a fu lle r un derstan d in g of w hat m an is, and his relation to the un iversal Law . God never tru sts any th ing to chance. Law is exact, undeviating— yesterday , today, an d fo rever the same.

T he Law m ust p e rta in to every thought. I f there is a law of g rav ity , it m ust be a law of S p irit. W hat we see in the outer m ust be a h in t of the inner, invisible Law , and th a t is p rim arily of mind. Consciousness en ters into everything, and is fu n d am ental in mind. W hy is it th a t some people get answ ers to p ray e r and others fa il? W e read in the S crip tu res of wond erfu l dem onstrations th rough the power of the S p irit, and in our m idst today are m ighty evidences of the same poVer. I f the Law is un iversal the re m ust be a way to observe it and get the same resu lts o thers have obtained. I t all depends upon consciousness.

T he investigation of p ray e r is holy ground. I t is a place w hereon, m etaphorically speaking, we m ust take off our shoes— th a t is, d ivest the m ateria l understand ing of its m ateria l lim itations.

I f we investigate in S p irit, as Jesus C hrist taugh t, we shall find out th a t all th a t en ters into success in any u n d ertak ing, en ters into success in p ray e r. A ll th rough the S crip tu res the different a ttitudes of m ind necessary in p ray e r are

pointed out. W e are to ld to be instant in p ray e r, to p ra y w ith the S p irit, p ray in understanding . W e have thought th a t p ray e r was som ething we could go a t in any old w ay a t any old time. B u t to get resu lts, we m ust p ray w ith persistence and understand ing , and w ith faith . This p rac tice establishes a consciousness where doubt cannot enter. Jesu s C hrist was in th is consciousness a ll the time. And is it possible fo r the o rd inary m an? Yes. B u t he m ust w atch and p ray . H e must not on ly p ra y ; he m ust w atch also.

You m ight ask. W hat is m an? and you would get a million answ ers if you asked a m illion people. I f you ask one who has sp iritu a l understand ing he would say th a t m an is m ind, and his dem onstration of th a t w hich we call I am, or the real self, w ill depend upon the consciousness which the “ I ” establishes. T he inner and the outer a re re la ted th rough consciousness, and the m ore you can fill your consciousness w ith the understand ing of the right rela tion of th ings, the stronger and better m an you w ill be.

E v ery thought you have sinks back and becomes p a r t of the subconscious. Then w atch your thoughts as carefu lly as the shepherd w atches his flock, and keep out the wolves, the devouring thoughts. The wolves a re the fea r thoughts and the thoughts of lack , and every thought th a t is adverse. You cannot build up the God- consciousness very fast if you continually allow devouring, destructive thoughts to en ter your mind. Begin now to w atch and p ray , and keep it up. I f you do you will find yourself daily becoming more firmly established in th a t consciousness where you are in constant communion w ith God, and your p ray e rs w ill be answered.
