The market size for FY 09 largely shrank by 30.9% year-on-year to JPY 440.5 billion. The fiscal 2009 watch market was 386.1 billion yen, down 32.3 percent, while the fiscal 2009 clock market was 544.4 billion yen, down 19.2 percent, on retail value basis. Both watch and clock declined largely. This was especially due to the large slump of the watch market, which represents approximately 88 percent of the total market based on retail value. The import watch market was sluggish, which accounts for approximately 70% of the total market. The speed of market contraction was accelerated with a large declination of market size of the watch market in 2008 for the first time in the past 8 years. The fiscal 2009 import watch market recorded a large shrink by 36.4 percent year-on-year with the market size of 283.5 billion yen on retail value basis. The market contraction was accelerated by the sharp decline of Swiss mechanical watch and Western import watch brands, which account for approximately 85 percent of the total import watch market. In 2009 all the demands from “wealthy group in Japan,” “strongly brand oriented middle class group” and “wealthy visitors from overseas” largely decreased. In 2008 the domestic watch brand market did very well, while in 2009 it recorded a large declination of market size to 102.6 billion yen, down 17.6 percent from the previous year.
