In our country, we collect and recycle batteries (white), glass (black), plastic (red), paper (blue) and cans (yellow). We also recycle used equipment and home appliances in special sections.

Battery recycling aims to reduce the number of batteries being disposed as municipal solid waste. People are concerned about contamination, particularly of soil contamination and water pollution, by the addition of heavy metals and other toxic chemicals from batteries.

Most types of batteries can be recycled. However, some batteries are recycled more readily than others, such as lead - acid automotive batteries (nearly 90% are recycled) and button cells (because of the value and toxicity of their chemicals).Other types, such as alkaline and rechargeable, can also be recycled.

Types of batteriesLead-acid batteries

• These batteries include but are not limited to: Car Batteries, Golf Cart Batteries, UPS Batteries, Industrial Fork-Lift Batteries, Motorcycle Batteries, and Commercial Batteries. These can be regular lead acid, sealed lead acid, Gel Type, or absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries.These are recycled by pounding them, neutralizing the acid, and separating the polymers from the lead. The recovered materials are used in a variety of applications, including new batteries.

Silver Oxide Batteries• Used most frequently in watches, toys and some medical devices

silver oxide batteries can become highly hazardous at the end of their useful life. After a period of use of approximately five years the batteries may begin to leak their contents which contains mercury, posing a serious health risk. The mercury will begin to corrode the inner shell of the battery. In most jurisdictions there exists legislation to regulate the appropriate handling and disposal of silver oxide batteries in order to minimize the risk to public health and the environment are recycled by shredding them and recovering the mercury.

Simple way to glass recycling

 You mustn’t throw away here:

-         mirrors-         window glass-         filament lamps-         fluorescent lamps-         porcelain You should throw away here:-         glass bottles-         jars-         cosmetic glass packing

Glass is very easy for recycling if it’s sorted. It should be sorted on: colour glass (green containers) and white glass (white containers).

On the tip, the glass is sorted again. Next steps are crushing and cleaning off labels. Than it’s melted in 1500 centigrade. From this is created new glassware.

Used tires are a type of waste, which most burdens natural environment.

They do not decompose, and because their storage requires large expanse on specially prefabricated area. In turn for fragmentation of the tires must disburse weighty amount of energy.

Material recycling aims to salvage material used to produce rubber. This process consists of two phazes – fragmentation and heat treatment. However, in result, sulfur isn’t removed out of rubber. Therefore obtained material is only of limited use. Only by-product tread tires is processed.

Salvage energetistic rely on burning whole tires, or after previous cutting. During combustion arise heat, which is use in process tochnological like the burning clinter in cement stoves or to produce steam in heat and power stations.

Plastic consists of various substances.

Most of them slowly spread and are harmful to people.

Aluminum alloys are alloys in which aluminum is the predominant metal. Typical alloying elements are copper, zinc, manganese, silicon, and magnesium.

There are two principal classifications, namely casting alloys and wrought alloys, both of which are

further subdivided into the categories heat-treatable and non-heat-treatable. About 85% of

aluminum is used for wrought products, for example rolled plate, foils and extrusions. Cast aluminium alloys yield cost effective products due to the low melting point, although they generally have lower tensile strengths than wrought alloys. The most important cast aluminium alloy system is Al-Si,

where the high levels of silicon (4-13%) contribute to give good casting characteristics. Aluminium

alloys are widely used in engineering structures and components where light weight or corrosion

resistance is required.

How to save energy?

1. Before you go to sleep turn off electrical equipment standing stand-by.

2. If you can don’t fly planes.3. Buy equipment with energy label A.4. Use a pressure cooker for cooking

vegetables and meat for a long time cooking.

5. Don’t use a large pot for cooking.6. Close the refrigerator door as soon as

possible.7. Switch the washing machine only when is

full.

8. Dry laundry on a string.9. Don’t leave mobile phone chargers, toothbrushes,

cameras plugged when they aren’t in use.10.Don’t unnecessarily leave lighted lamps in the

garden.11.Wash at 40°C is much more economical than the

60°C or 90°C.12.Many electronics, computer scanners and printers

also consume electricity when they are turned off, effectively to incorporate them into one extension cord with switch and also disable the night.

Shopping bags

Paper bag - the most common paper bag is produced from recycled paper. We use them for shopping. It is environmentally friendly. Recently they have made colourful ones with eco - friendly paint.

I have asked fifty people about the environment. This questionnaire aimed to check how much people care about the environment through the implementation of simple daily activities.

People asked by me mostly answered ‘sometimes’. A lot of them use paper bags or other special bags when they go shopping. It is encouraging that people have started to care about electricity in houses. It is very inportant because the climate is changing all the time. Still people forget about segregating waste, giving old drugs to pharmacy and collecting waste paper.

Out – of date medicine

• Medicines are substances that lead human to normal state. The most important in medicines is expiration date. If expiration date in drugs ends they will be very dangerous for body. We shuldn’t throw out drugs to rubbish bin because they can get to surface water and groundwater. Before you buy medicine you should check expiration date.

Where do we throw away medicine?

• Usually out – dated medicines and boxes we throw to rubbish bin. This is a very bad solution. These medicines are dangerous wastes and they are bad for the environment. We should throw tyem into special containers, which are placed in some chemists’. Next they are recovered. Few people know that throwing out – dated medicine is prohibited.

It is important that the waste is not wet - humidity is an important parameter of its quality - and that

together with paper you throw no mechanical impurities (eg metal, glass, textiles, sand), chemical (e.g. adhesives, paints), or microbial (mold and fungi).

The paper and its throughput ...In the twenty-first century, it is difficult to imagine functioning

without paper. Average inhabitant of the world annually consumes about 50 kg of paper. Currently, the global annual production reaches 318 million tons. Such a great number would be difficult to produce using only the raw material (wood).

Paper was invented by a Chinese, Caj Lun, who produced his first sheet in 105 AD from old fishing nets.
