It is that time of year, time to register for my annual C.O.P.S. Extended Family Retreat. I say “my” retreat be-cause it truly is a time for me. This will be my fifth trip to the Trout Lodge and I always look forward to it.
Almost 10 years ago, I lost my brother-in-law, Deputy Kent Mundell, in the line of duty. He was responding to a domestic violence call and was shot while trying to protect those in need. It was at that moment when I be-came a member of a club that no one wants to join.
I first learned of the C.O.P.S. Hands on Retreats in Washington DC during Police Week. My initial thought was that I didn’t need it, I have a strong support system at home. Nonetheless, after encouragement from my local C.O.P.S. President, I went to my first retreat. I never imagined that my circle of care could and would grow exponentially. It was enlightening.
The dynamic of the group is amazing. Right away, I felt welcome and like I truly fit in. I had found “my peo-ple”. It is heartbreaking that our tribe keeps growing, but I continually find comfort in being surrounded by people who have shared the same loss. The seminars are poignant, presented by counselors with great em-pathy, and the activities are a blast.
I wholeheartedly encourage all survivors to attend their unique retreat. It will truly help with healthy ways to remember your loved one and not to forget yourself in the process.
GO. REMEMBER. REPEAT.
Erin Aiken
Sister-in-law, Deputy Kent Mundell, Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, EOW 12-28-2009

On behalf of my family, I would like to thank Lauren Truscott and the Seattle Police Department for the me-morial event we were invited to on May 15th. It was professional, thoughtful, and very well done.
We would like to thank Chief Carmen Best for taking her time to shake hands with each one of the survivors in attendance. We were greeted warmly when we arrived, we were impressed with the police horse and rider at the entrance, and we felt very welcome.
We hope this becomes an annual event as it is important to remember our fallen officers and after all these years, we are grateful we are able to participate on these occasions.
Thank you again.
Judy Ann Rumble Bergvall, Daughter, Seattle Police Officer William T. Rumble EOW 10/29/1947
———————————————————————————————————————————————
We remembered 3 Washington State law enforcement officers during the National Peace Officer's memorial service in our nation's capitol.
Seattle Police Honor Guard Memorial Ceremony was also observed on May 15, at the SPD West Precinct. We paid tribute to the 59 fallen SPD officers and families.
There was a candlelight vigil held on the 13th that we were not able to attend, but we were glad we attended the Memorial Ceremony. As we walked to the Precinct we were greeted by members of the SPD Mounted Patrol. We entered the precinct and were immediately met by members of the Honor Guard. Sergeant Lauren Truscott showed great care and support. It was very much appreciated.
We heard from Mayor Jenny Durkan, and SPD Chief Carmen Best shared some of her personal connections when a touching video tribute was shared about Detective Antonio Terry EOW June 4, 1994 (25 years).
Also honored with emotional video tributes were Officer Nicholas Davis EOW December 18, 1994 (35 years), and Officer Timothy Brenton EOW October 31, 2009 (10 years).
I could feel the emotions in the room after each video. All the video presentations brought to mind many of my own personal memories. Never Forget.
Ryan Barber, Cousin, Seattle Police Officer Joselito ‘Lito’ Barber, EOW 08/13/2006
