About This Document

This document explains the Universal Policies and Guidelines of Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu. It appliesto ALL clubs and Instructors in the USA, and in other countries where Wa Shin Ryu may betaught. However, Instructors outside NewMexico have the authority to modify aspects ofthis document to suit their own particular situation and circumstances.

The document also addresses certain special areas such as brown and black belt promotions andteaching licenses, among other items. All participants in WSRmust be at least 16 years of ageand are strongly advised to carry liability/injury insurance. Current Promotion Guidelines andCriteriamay be found on pages18-19 of this document.

Instructor and Black Belt Requirements

1. WSR instructors and all black belts in NewMexico are required to carrypersonal liability insurance (strongly advised for all WSR instructorseverywhere).

2. In order to teach in one's own club an Instructor must possess, at a minimum, aClub Instructor Teaching License awarded by Sensei or by a certifiedRokudan in WSR.

3. All Blue,Brown and Black Belt holders in Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu in the USand elsewheremust be registered members of the USJJF. This may bedone online at usjjf.org. The annual membership fee is $45. Life Membershipis optional.

4. All promotion recommendations in WSR go through the Head Office at theUniversity of NewMexico. Once approved, candidates receive a WSR RankCertificate and a patch from Sensei. Unregistered club promotions areinvalid and may NOT be issued to students by any WSR Instructor.

5. All ranked students in WSR are required to wear the System Patch and thecorrect belt. Students may not wear their WSR belt without the System Patch. However, ALL students (including white belts) are permitted to wear the WaShin Ryu System Patch regardless of rank.

6. Head Instructors may charge club dues as they see fit. No percentage of themoney collected is expected, or required, to be sent to Sensei in NewMexico(a common practice in many martial arts which are run as a business).

Page 4: WaShinRyuJujutsu - wsrjj.orgunm.wsrjj.org/sbschedulev3.pdf · 2019. 11. 14. · 3 AboutThisDocument ThisdocumentexplainstheUniversalPoliciesandGuidelinesofWaShinRyuJujutsu.Itapplies

7. Instructors and/or black belts who fail to carry liability insurance and are suedwill in no way hold Andrew Yiannakis Sensei, the Founder of Wa ShinRyu, accountable or responsible for their predicament, and consequencesthereof.

8. All Instructors and black belts in WSR are required to possess the following:

(i) First Aid/AED and CPR Certification(ii) Concussion Certification(iii) Annual or Life Membership in USJJF (all brown and black belts)(iv) Annual Insurance Coverage. All students, including all blackbelts in

WSR working out in NewMexico are required to carry insurance.Instructors operating in States other than NewMexico are moststrongly advised to have such insurance coverage.

9. All Instructors are expected to enforce WSR Policies and Guidelines so faras these are applicable to specific clubs and circumstances. However, hygiene and safety practices are to be strictly adhered to. For example, all students and Instructors are required to wear zori (flip-flops) from thedressing room to the mat area. It is also strongly recommended thateveryone wears volleyball-style knee pads for added protection.

10. On the mat male students and male instructorsmay NOT wear a t-shirt undertheir gi. Instructors are expected to enforce this rule.

11. Upon receiving the Award For Excellence (typically at Nidan or Sandan level)male candidates are permitted and required to place the Wa Shin RyuTattoo on their left forearm. For women this is optional at this time.

12. All Instructors who run their own clubs are encouraged to develop their ownPolicies and Guidelines to suit their own specific circumstances. Theseshould be available to all their students online, or in hardcopy form. However, the basic structure and requirements in our Universal Policies &Guidelines (v21.0) should be adhered to as far as this is possible.

Remaining in "Good Standing", "Time Out","Honorable Exit", Lapsed Membership, etc.

TIME OUTAt times students need a break from jujutsu. This is acceptable so long as they officially apply for"TIME OUT" (good for one semester, or 4 months but may be extended for another 4 months)and begin paying a Membership Sustaining Fee (MSF) of $10/month (this must be paid in onelump sum of $40). The MSF ensures that:

1. They remain in GOOD STANDING2. Students lose all their accumulated promotion points3. They avoid paying a Re-Entry Fee of $65 when they return to jujutsu4. While on TIME OUT students retain the privilege of attending Advanced Saturday Seminars for $5

per session5. They retain the privilege of testing for promotion as soon as they rebuild their promotion points.

While on TIME OUT a student may not attend Mon/Wed club workouts until after he/she requestsa change in status from TIME OUT to REGULAR STATUS. At that point the student begins to payregular monthly dues.

TIME OUT And BAD STANDING STATUS

Students who fail to request TIME OUT and fail to pay a Membership Sustaining Fee of $40 for fourmonths are considered students IN BAD STANDING:

1. Such students lose all their accumulated promotion points2. They are categorized as Students in Bad Standing3. They forfeit the privilege of testing for promotion for at least 8 months after returning to jujutsu4. Students in BAD STANDING may NOT attend any workouts at Sandia Budokan until such time as

they are reinstated5. Students In Bad Standing who decide to return to the club are required to pay a Re-Entry Fee of$65 plus back-dated monthly dues (for previous TWO months), and Late Payment Penalties.

HONORABLE EXIT (Quitting Jujutsu)

Students who wish to terminate their association with Sandia Budokan and Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu in anhonorable fashion may do so by requesting an HONORABLE EXIT. If they decide to return at somepoint in the future they are required to pay a $75 Re-Entry Fee. An Honorable Exit ensures that suchstudents remain in Good Standing with the club, and WSR, but they lose all their prior promotionpoints. However, they may keep their rank.

Page 10: WaShinRyuJujutsu - wsrjj.orgunm.wsrjj.org/sbschedulev3.pdf · 2019. 11. 14. · 3 AboutThisDocument ThisdocumentexplainstheUniversalPoliciesandGuidelinesofWaShinRyuJujutsu.Itapplies

Late Fees and Cost of Re-Entry1. Monthly dues AND the Membership Sustaining Fee (where applicable) are to be paid promptly

between the 1st and 10th of every month. Students who fail to pay by the 10th of everymonth, are fined a Late Payment Penalty of $15 over and above monthly dues, and/or othermoney owed. The Late Payment Penalty fee goes to the Treasurer for deposit in the clubaccount. It is not paid to Andrew Sensei.

2. If monthly membership is allowed to lapse for MORE than 30 days, and a student has NOTapplied for "Time Out", then there is a "Re-Entry Fee" of $45, in addition to a Late PaymentPenalty of $15, and monthly dues for the month(s) they skipped.

3. Students whose monthly membership lapses for MORE than 60 days and have not requested"Time Out", or an "Honorable Exit", are permanently dropped from the club roster and areconsidered to be "DISHONORABLE STUDENTS". If they decide to return within 100days the Re-Entry Fee is $125. Re-entry by Dishonorable Students is subject to approval by acommittee of blackbelts in New Mexico.

All fees may be paid to the Treasurer, or the instructors of record.

HONORABLE and DISHONORABLE EXIT /DISMISSAL fromWSR

Quitting Sandia Budokan and/or Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu

Any student in Wa Shin Ryu may discontinue workouts and membership in WSR and/or SandiaBudokan at any time, and without prejudice, by simply informing Sensei (verbally, or byemail or text). This is considered the proper and honorable manner for leaving Wa Shin Ryu. Suchstudents will be granted an "Honorable Exit" from Wa Shin Ryu. Students who simply quit without aword; who fail to respond to emails from Sensei; and who fail to sever their relationship with SandiaBudokan and/or Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu in a proper and honorable manner will be viewed as"Students Without Honor". Such students may have ALL their ranks nullified, and theirdishonorable status may be so indicated on the WSR website. This applies to all students inWSR who hold the rank of Gokyu (green belt), or higher.

Students who are Dismissed for repeated infractions (but not dishonorably) from thesystem may be permitted to return to Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu (for a fee of $100),depending on the severity of the problem. This applies to all WSR clubs nationwide.A Dishonorable Dismissal, however, often involves severe violations of Giri and/orMartial Maturity requirements, including showing a lack of respect to any black belt inWa Shin Ryu Jujutsu. Such students will NEVER be permitted to return.

Payment Schedule/Monthly Dues/Payments To Instructors1. Monthly dues are collected by the respective instructors between the 1st and 10th of

every month. There is a Late Payment Fee of $15 for students who fail to pay by the10th of the month. The same penalty applies to theMembership Sustaining Fee (MSF)which must be paid by the 10th of themonth.

Page 12: WaShinRyuJujutsu - wsrjj.orgunm.wsrjj.org/sbschedulev3.pdf · 2019. 11. 14. · 3 AboutThisDocument ThisdocumentexplainstheUniversalPoliciesandGuidelinesofWaShinRyuJujutsu.Itapplies

12

2. These dues are then turned over (in a clearly labeled envelope) by the instructors to Codysensei no later than the 12th of every month, along with the names of all studentswho paid (so indicated on envelope), and the amount paid by each student. It is theinstructors' responsibility to ensure that such fees reach Cody senseiby the 12th of every month.

3. Cody sensei then pays Sandia Budokan (rent) about the 15th of every month.

4. Cody sensei then pays all instructors NO LATER than the 20th of every month(contingent upon having sufficient funds in our account).

4.Advanced Saturday SeminarsBecause of limited space (the cap is 14) at Sandia Budokan, Advanced Seminars require studentsto sign up about FIVE days in advance.

(i) If they decide to cancel after signing up, they may do so without penalty by 12 noon on theFriday before the scheduled Advanced Saturday Seminar.

(ii) Students who cancel AFTER 12 noon (on Friday) are required to pay a $15 LateCancellation Fee and the $5mat fee.

(iii) Students who fail to cancel, and simply don't show up, are banned from SandiaBudokan for THREE to SIX weeks, and are charged a Misconduct Fee of $35, and theregular mat fee of $5. Failure to cancel in good time, and/or failure to show up withoutnotifying Sensei prevents other students from being able to sign up and attend. Often we alsohave students who are on a Waiting List, and failure to cancel in good time prevents suchstudents from attending. This is considered irresponsible behavior and a gross violation ofGiri and Martial Maturity. On rare occasions when students refuse to pay the Misconduct andMat Fee they are permanently dropped from WSR and all their ranks are invalidated. Theirnames may also appear on the WSR website and may be listed as Dishonorable Students!

Liability and Accident Insurance

1. All students who train at Sandia Budokan (and any other private facility) are required to payapprox. between $20-24 per year for insurance. Ranked students registered in PENP 108 whochoose to attend the club may pay a discounted insurance rate of $22 (effective February ofevery year). Unranked Beginners in 108 receive automatic insurance coverage. The fee, along with a list of student names (and their age and rank), is turned over to the Chief Instructorfor processing.

The insurance fee includes liability and injury with aggregate coverage of $2 million.

2. All SB students also sign a waiver of liability in their first week of classes. This waiver isturned over promptly to the Club Secretary for filing.

Page 13: WaShinRyuJujutsu - wsrjj.orgunm.wsrjj.org/sbschedulev3.pdf · 2019. 11. 14. · 3 AboutThisDocument ThisdocumentexplainstheUniversalPoliciesandGuidelinesofWaShinRyuJujutsu.Itapplies

13

3. No student will be permitted to practice in WSR if:

(i) Their insurance is not paid up (except Unranked Beginners from PENP 108)(ii) If they haven't paid their monthly club dues(iii) If they are on "TIME OUT" (except for AdvSatSeminars), unless they formally switch

to Regular Status and pay their monthly dues.(iv) If they fail to wear a clean gi(v) If they fail to wear zori/flip-flops from the dressing room to the mat area

4. ALL Brown (Sankyu and higher) and all Black Belts everywhere are required to join theUSJJF, Traditional Jujutsu Division. The annual fee is $45. Students may sign up online atusjjf.org andmail their registration number directly to Sensei at UNM ([email protected]).Their promotion does not become official until this info is received by Sensei.

A Note About Promotion

No student will be promoted to Sankyu (Brown Belt) or higher, in Wa Shin RyuJujutsu who is not a USJJF member, and has not attended the seminar on the TIME-STAGE MODEL (principles of attack and defense), and at least 75% of the units(these are taught in sections) taught by Andrew Sensei in Advanced SaturdaySeminars. In fact, since such seminars are held only twice a month students arestrongly advised to attend all of them.

New Students

We are currently working on accepting new Beginner students if there is adequate demand. Theissue is currently under discussion. Students who have experience in other martial arts suchas judo, aikido, chin na, taijutsu, silat, hapkido, tang soo do, and the like, may be considered foradmission into regular Intermediate Level classes at Sandia Budokan so long as they hold theequivalent rank of Sankyu (third brown) in their own system. They must also be prepared todemonstrate their skill level, especially ukemi, at Sandia Budokan.

New students (who hold a Sankyu or equivalent in another martial art) attending their first classMUST pay their $22-24 insurance fee (non refundable) and sign a waiver. This will providethem with ONE FREE WORKOUT. Students who wish to continue to attend classes will becharged the regular monthly fee in their second class. This fee, along with the insurance andliability waiver, will be processed in accordance with WSR policies.

A gi is required to work out at Sandia Budokan. Until their first promotion in WSR Jujutsu anycolor gi will suffice (including an all white gi). Upon receiving the rank of Sankyu (3rd brown)students are required to buy the standard Wa Shin Ryu gi (black pants/white top, for approx.$43-$60, based on height and weight), an appropriate color belt ($6) and the WSR patch ($10).

All-White Uniform

Beginners (unranked), and holders of a Nanakyu, Rokkyu, Gokyu or Yonkyu rank may wear anall-white gi, if they so wish. However, upon achieving the rank of Sankyu (3rd brown) they arerequired to wear the standard WSR uniform which consists of a white jacket and black pants.All-white gis range in price from $33-$40, depending on size.

Integrating New Students from UNM Classes

No students may work out at the club without a gi, insurance coverage, or who do notpay monthly dues. A clean gi and zori are also required.

Health and Safety Considerations For ALL WSR Clubs

Zori or flip-flopsMUST be worn from the dressing room to the mat at UNM, at Sandia Budokanand in all WSR Clubs everywhere. The highest health and hygiene standards must bemaintained! At Sandia Budokan no street shoes may be worn past the waiting area (area infront of screen). All Health and Hygiene practices must be strictly adhered to (these are posted atSandia Budokan and in the UNM class syllabus), including vacuuming the dojo after everyworkout. All instructors everywhere are expected to inform their students about such hygienepractices, and must ensure they are carried out. Further, all instructors are also expected toinsist on partner safety by requiring their students before sparring to repeat, aloud, the GoldenRule below:

IMPORTANT SAFETY REQUIREMENTS(everyone, please read)

Student safety is of the highest importance to all of us who teachWa Shin Ryu Jujutsu. Before sparring sessions we ensure that all students are matched by height and weight,

and supervisors ensure that no pair of students is too close to another pair.

We also have what we call aGolden Rule. Before sparring sessions students are askedto repeat this rule by yelling out "Partner Safety"!

Beginners in WSRmust also be apprised by all instructors of the fact that WSR is a bodycontact combat art that involves various forms of both attack and defense. The art

includes throwing, joint locking, pressure points, choking/strangling, and striking andkicking (light contact permitted). Students who have a low tolerance for pain or who donot like to be held, or physically restrained, should NOT sign up forWa Shin Ryu Jujutsu.

All instructors should also convey to their students that we have a "one tap release rule".That is, if a student taps out once, the person applying the technique must release his/her

partner immediately.

Finally, instructors must avoid demonstrating techniques on Beginners unlessthey are asked to do so by the Beginner. Under such circumstances instructors may show

the technique to the student by applying it lightly.

Promotion Points and Jujutsu DiaryIn order to test for promotion students must accumulate a number of points. These may beacquired from workouts in the UNM classes, at Sandia Budokan, and/or from participation inSpecial Events (for a total of 1 point per event). Demonstrations and Advanced Seminarscarry 2 promotion points each.

Students may also earn up to 12 promotion points a year by helping promote the club andWaShin Ryu Jujutsu on the internet (LIKE & SHARE 2 times a month = 1 promotion point). This canbe accomplished by LIKING and SHARINGWSR posts on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn andTwitter. Promoting the system is a requirement for advancement in rank!

Also, students may earn 2 promotion points by signing up for a Google jujutsu account (useformat "[email protected]"). Such accounts are REQUIRED of all students in WSR.Students should keep a record of all such activity, with dates, in their Jujutsu Diary.

ALL students are expected to keep a Jujutsu Diary (for brown and black belt ranks it's arequirement) that records attendances, events and points (with dates), including PersonalInsights and Observations. Insights and Observations are an extremely important elementof the JJ Diary. This diary will be presented to the examiners at the end of the testing period. Noblue, brown or black belt holder may test for promotion without a fully completed "live" JujutsuDiary (as opposed to a diary that's filled in from memory)!

Students who complete PENP 108 at UNMmay be eligible to test for promotion to Nanakyu (7thKyu, Yellow), OR Rokkyu (6th Kyu, Orange). Students who complete the Intermediate Class(PENP 109), or who complete a second semester at Sandia Budokan, may test for Gokyu (5th Kyu,Green belt), and in exceptional cases for Blue Belt (Yonkyu).

Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu is on a three semester plan; that is, fall, spring and summer. Toensure that all earned points carry over from one semester to another students are expected towork out all year round (except when on TIME OUT). To keep their accumulated promotionpoints and remain in GOOD STANDING studentsmust work out at least 70% of the time (21workouts) each semester. Once again please note that this includes summers.

A student who is unable to make 70% of the workouts in a particular semester may request"Time Out" from Sensei or the Head Instructor to remain in Good Standingwith the club(conditions apply). Students who fail to do so lose all their previous promotion points.

Black and Brown Belt PromotionsStudents testing for promotion to brown, and higher ranks, are required to take a written take-hometest, an oral test, and demonstrate a variety of skills and techniques before two (or more) higherranking black belt examiners. They are also expected to work out at least 10 times a month andaccumulate the required number of Advanced Seminars (typically held on Saturdays). They mustalso satisfy Giri and Martial Maturity Requirements.

The 10 virtues of WSR Jujutsu are:

The tattoo is an honor and an award that should be worn with pride. Inparticular, Commitment demonstrates an unwavering commitment to Wa Shin Ryu, andLoyalty speaks to loyalty to one's Sensei. 21

NOTE: The System Soke is typically appointed by the previous Soke. Ryuso is a System Founder.

* Menkyo Kaiden is typically awarded by the Founder or current Soke (if the Founder is deceased)to a person, or persons, who are expected to serve as Heads of Region (e.g., the Southwest). Toprevent system fragmentation after the passing of the Founder there will always be one supremeMenkyo Kaiden holder leading the system who is appointed to be above every other holder of aMenkyo Kaiden. This person shall be known asMenkyo Kaiden Soke (Headmaster). Inthe absence of the Founder, or current Head of System, a Menkyo Kaiden Soke may be elected bythe five highest-ranking activemembers of the Executive Committee of Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu.

AWord About the Spelling of, and Use of the Designation of Sensei

All black belts in Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu shall be referred to by their students as sensei (with asmall "s"). The Head of the System (or School) and all Rokudan holders are also addressed as Sensei, but this is spelled with a capital "S". The term is used in the form Andrew Sensei.

About Giri and Martial MaturityGiri

Giri refers to the various duties and obligations that accompany higher rank and include thedemonstration of leadership, proactive behavior and support for Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu, theirSensei and Sandia Budokan (and the UNM classes where appropriate). Advanced Students have aresponsibility to set an example for the lower ranks through superior attendance, teaching, proactive behavior (taking the initiative), promoting the system on Facebook (and otherelectronic media) and the like. In particular, holders of Sankyu, or higher rank, are expected toattend classes in the fall, spring and summer, and during breaks (when they are not away onvacation or taking some time off). The rule is, if you are in town live up to the responsibilitiesof your rank and provide leadership, attend workouts and teach (as appropriate). In particular, black belts who have a tendency to "disappear" for the whole summer, or the whole of theChristmas Break will be defined as Casual Practitioners and will be treated accordingly. Further,it is considered rude and disloyal to cut off communication with one's Sensei (e.g., failing torespond to emails/texts from Sensei) and a gross violation of GIRI Principles.

Attendance Policy for Serious Jujutsuka

Serious Jujutsuka are expected to attend workouts and/or teach classes in the Fall, Spring andSummer at Sandia Budokan and/or in the UNM classes. They are also expected to attend someworkouts over the Christmas break (and other breaks), and help teach and serve as role modelsfor the lower ranks. We of course recognize the fact that under extraordinary circumstancesjujutsuka need time off. This is acceptable so long as they discuss their intentions with theirSensei and request official "Time Out" or "Inactive Status".

Martial Maturity

Martial Maturity is defined in greater detail on our Wa Shin Ryu Jujutsu website and includessuch attributes as keeping your word, being reliable, being responsible, practicing partner safety, being consistent in your actions, and more. Check out Martial Maturity at:

www.unm.wsrjj.org/system.html

Page 22: WaShinRyuJujutsu - wsrjj.orgunm.wsrjj.org/sbschedulev3.pdf · 2019. 11. 14. · 3 AboutThisDocument ThisdocumentexplainstheUniversalPoliciesandGuidelinesofWaShinRyuJujutsu.Itapplies

22

Serious Jujutsuka and Casual Participants: A ClarificationWa Shin Ryu Jujutsu is sufficiently flexible in terms of how a student may approach the art. Thosewho take the art very seriously, and use the principles of the system to live and guide their livesby (who live "The Martial Way"), are considered to be Serious Jujutsuka (Budoka). Students whoview the art merely as a form of recreation (Casual Jujutsuka), and their primary goals are to stayin shape, stay healthy, have fun, and the like (all laudable goals), often have lower aspirations, and their commitment and loyalty to the system and their Sensei is less strong. Some may alsohave other obligations and commitments which prevent them from committing, or giving back tothe art. Such students are not eligible to advance beyond the rank of Yonkyu (blue belt).

Casual Participants may work out and attend sessions whenever their schedules permit, withoutany penalties or sanctions from Sensei, or from other black belts. At the very least CasualParticipants are expected to support the club by paying their monthly dues regularly andpromptly.

Serious Jujutsuka, in addition to striving to live "The Martial Way" (in accordance with our 10virtues and Guiding Principles), also work out frequently, attend Advanced Seminars and SpecialEvents, provide leadership, constantly promote the system on the internet, and by othermeans, and serve as serious role models for the lower ranks. They step up when needed, demonstrate proactive behavior, frequently stay after class to help the lower ranks, and workout all year round (except when on vacation, of course!). For Serious Jujutsuka Wa Shin Ryu isa Way of Life. For demonstrating their commitment and dedication such black belt holders earnthe privilege of receiving the Award For Excellence, and placing the WSR tattoo on their leftforearm. Only special students are accorded such recognition. Further, Serious Jujutsuka show aserious commitment to Wa Shin Ryu and an unwavering loyalty to their Sensei.

Promoting WSR on the InternetPromoting the system is an extremely important activity and it demonstrates, among otherqualities, a willingness to engage in proactive behavior and give back to the system. Thisapplies to all ranked members in Wa Shin Ryu but it is an especially important activity for allbrown and black belt holders everywhere. Black belts who fail to promote the system on theInternet (e.g., through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn or YouTube) in a sustainedand continuous manner will not be viewed kindly by the Head of System, or their HeadInstructors. At the very least black belts are expected to LIKE and SHARE posts pertaining to WaShin Ryu Jujutsu at least TWICE a month! This applies to all black belts in the USA and abroad. All students who actively help promote the system on the internet earn promotion points (approx 1point per month for a total of 12 points a year.

It should be noted that black and brown belts everywhere who fail to helppromote the system on social media will NOT be considered for promotion toa higher rank.
