Dear Friends,

Thank you for joining us at the third annual Washington Ideas Forum. Together with The Atlantic and the Newseum, we are delighted to offer you this series of discussions on the most important issues we face.

Over the past year we’ve seen a continuing stream of evidence that our public discourse is increasingly polarized, combative, and all too often, decidedly unproductive. But the Aspen Institute — along with our friends at The Atlantic and the Newseum — remains passionately committed to the idea that smart, nonpartisan, civil dialogue and the vibrant exchange of ideas and opinions are our best hope. This is why we are all here today.

Since 2005, the Institute and The Atlantic have worked together to present the Aspen Ideas Festival, a wide-ranging gathering of leaders from business, politics, the arts, science, and media. We’ve worked hard not only to bring together the most interesting newsmakers and expert interviewers, but also to insist on dialogue that’s civil, thoughtful, and enlightening — much like the articles to be found on the pages of The Atlantic. I’m grateful to David Bradley, Justin Smith, James Bennet, Elizabeth Baker Keffer, and the rest of the excellent Atlantic team for all of their efforts in bringing the Washington Ideas Forum to life.

I hope you enjoy and learn from the discussions you’ll be part of over the next two days, and that you’ll make meaningful connections here, too. We may not all agree on how to solve our problems, but we can certainly all learn from each other, and perhaps even find some common ground.

All best,

WALTER ISAACSON

Our Friends and Guests,

As in years past, it is my privilege to welcome you to the Washington Ideas Forum. Now in its third year, the Forum, I suppose, falls short of a great Washington tradition. But, it’s a pretty good tradition and a genuine privilege to host.

Our purpose and privilege, here, are to serve you - to produce, in highest concentrate, the most important ideas moving through Washington and the nation. But, equally, you serve us in affording the occasion to practice our craft. The annual Ideas Forum gathers the most-prominent journalists in the U.S. to interview the nation’s leadership class. At least by ambition, there should be great journalism on display.

And, as to that, as to great journalism, I want to nod in tribute to my two co-hosts - Walter Isaacson and Shelby Coffey. Arguably, and I would make the argument, Walter is the most-prominent U.S. magazine editor since Harold Ross edited The New Yorker in the 1920’s. (And, that was The New Yorker. How good could it have been?) Shelby Coffey introduced Style to Washington and The Washington Post before a remarkable tenure as editor-in-chief of the LA Times. Shelby is, as well, journalism’s most-elegant leading man.

Everything in Washington need not be grim. I hope these two days please as well as educate.

My best wishes to you. You are among friends.

The world of tomorrow needs answers that last. That’s why we’re building them today, with customers all over the world.

It’s why we’re designing our technology to last longer and use fewer resources. It’s why we’re helping our customers reduce their CO2 emissions. And it’s why we’re pioneering new answers with one of the world’s largest environmental portfolios.

As a result, we were just named the best in our business sector by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. And recognized as the top company overall by the Carbon Disclosure

Project, the world’s largest independent database of corporate climate change information.

Yet we’d never claim to have all the answers. That’s why we’re working with 190 countries. Thousands of cities. Tens of thousands of companies. In energy, industry and healthcare.

We’re working with the world today to create answers that last for the world of tomorrow.

Our nation is facing an obesity problem and we plan on being part of the solution.By promoting balanced diets and active lifestyles, we can make a positive difference.

For some people, a 12-fl.-oz. beverage may be too much. Everyone’s needs are different. So we’ve created a variety of package sizes, like our 90-calorie, 7.5-fl.-oz. portion-control Coke cans, and more than 150 low-cal, no-cal options to help them achieve a more balanced diet.

While keeping track of calories is important, so is burning them off. In our partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, we’ve helped more than one million kids learn the importance of physical activity and proper nutrition through the Triple Play program.

“Fifty million patients neglected each year. Finally, someone’s searching for a cure.”

– Haley Wong, dengue fever patient

Haley Wong, like millions of others in the developing world,

was ravaged by dengue fever, a debilitating disease

marked by severe bone pain and high fever that can lead

to hemorrhaging and death. Diseases such as dengue fever

are not often a research priority because they are confined

to developing regions. In 2002, Novartis established a non-

profit research center in Singapore dedicated to neglected

diseases including dengue fever, and they’re getting closer

to a cure.To learn more, visit ThinkWhatsPossible.com

Medical Innovation:A Prescription for American Jobs and Better Health.Health care advances surround us. Amazing innovations generated by biopharmaceutical research

and science help us live longer, more productive lives. Over 300 new medicines have been brought to

patients in the last decade and the biopharmaceutical sector is not stopping there. Driving innovation

Since 1857, The Atlantic has helped shape the national debate on the most critical and contentious issues of our times, from politics, business, and the economy, to technology, arts, and culture. Through in-depth analysis in the monthly print magazine, complemented by up-to-the-minute insights delivered throughout the day on theatlantic.com, The Atlantic provides the nation’s thought leaders and professional class with forward-looking, fresh perspectives that provoke and challenge, define and affect the lives we’re living today, and give shape to the lives we will live tomorrow. theatlantic.com 202.266.7000

The Aspen Institute mission is twofold: to foster values-based leadership, encouraging individuals to reflect on the ideals and ideas that define a good society, and to provide a neutral and balanced venue for discussing and acting on critical issues. The Aspen Institute does this primarily in four ways: seminars, young-leader fellowships around the globe, policy programs, and public conferences and events. The Institute is based in Washington, DC; Aspen, Colorado; and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also has offices in New York City and an international network of partners.aspeninstitute.org 202.736.5800

The Newseum educates the public about the value of a free press in a free society and tells the stories of the world’s important events in unique and engaging ways. A 250,000-square-foot museum of news, the Newseum blends 500 years of news history, up-to-the-second technology, and hands-on exhibits for a one-of-a-kind museum experience, featuring seven levels of galleries, theaters, retail spaces and visitor services taking visitors behind the scenes to experience how and why news is made. newseum.org 888.639.7386
