1. Outline - Waseda University Graduate School of Commerce
Waseda University’s Graduate Schools aim at the conduct of research and education on advanced and
specialized academic theory and applications, and contributions to the creation and development of culture
and the welfare of humankind through profound research and high quality education.
In accordance with the Waseda University’s Graduate School objectives, the Graduate School of
Commerce offers a master’s/doctoral program and an MBA program. The doctoral program is composed of
two terms: an initial two-year master’s program and a subsequent three-year doctoral program.
MASTER’S/DOCTORAL PROGRAM: MAJOR IN COMMERCE
The master’s program and the doctoral program constitute a 'Major in Commerce', which has three courses
(and seven seminars): (1) business management (management, marketing and international business, and
finance), (2) accounting (accounting), and (3) industry and economics (theory and quantitative analysis,
public policy, and history of economics). Although each course or subject is a strand through the two
programs, overall commerce research and education are also involved.
The doctoral program will develop researchers and professors who can conduct research activities
independently in their fields of specialization. These people will have the necessary advanced research
capability and rich scholarly knowledge required as a base for engagement in advanced specialized
occupations. Those who have been in the doctoral program for three years or more and have, after
undergoing the required research guidance, passed the doctoral dissertation screening and the final exam,
will receive a doctoral degree (commerce).
The master’s program will foster human resources capable of absorbing detailed, broad-perspective, deep
scholarly background in their specialized fields, and possessing the high level capability necessary for
research in a specialized field or an advanced expertise occupation. Those who have been in the master’s
program for one and half years or more, have earned 36 credits or more and have, after undergoing the
required research guidance, passed the master’s thesis screening and the final exam, will receive a master’s
degree (commerce).
MBA PROGRAMS: WASEDA BUSINESS SCHOOL
The Graduate School of Commerce’s Waseda Business School (WBS) offers five MBA programs so as to
serve various business-related needs. Students who enroll in the MBA program for one or two years and
have earned relevant credits will receive an MBA degree from Waseda University.
1) The International MBA Program (in English or Japanese) is a full-time two-year program of study
through which students develop their business management and leadership skills to prepare for careers
in a global era.
2) The One-year MBA program (in Japanese) provides students with intensive studies of general
management by attending daytime classes over a 12 month period.
3) The Evening MBA program (in Japanese) is a two-year program which enables students to acquire
general management skills by attending evening and Saturday classes.
4) The Specialized MBA program (in Japanese) is a two-year program which enables students to learn

2. Policy of the Waseda Business School (WBS)
Policy regarding the granting of degrees (Diploma policy)
Waseda University, with its unique integrated nature, systematic curriculum, and university-wide
educational and student life environment, is developing various exchanges involving learning, culture,
languages and values. These exchanges are aimed at the cultivation of human resources who will
contribute to the global society through their own initiative.
Waseda Business School offers 5 MBA programs composed of curricula that help with the training of
future experts in various management fields including business leaders and business executives who will
operate in a global environment. All students who engage in academic study and research and meet
required standards will receive MBA degrees.
The details differ depending on program objectives and contents, but general standards are as follows:
1) Enrolling in school for a specified time period
2) Obtaining a specified number of credits in core/elective courses
3) Completing a thesis (a required paper) based on knowledge obtained in seminars or courses
4) Exceeding a minimum cumulative GPA.
Policy regarding curriculum organization and implementation (Curriculum policy)
WBS programs are designed in order to train future business leaders, business executives and
professionals in the management field operating in a global business environment.
Three points to be considered over all programs when organizing the curriculum are as follows:
1. Establishing requirements for core courses and elective courses, which are designed for individual
program’s purpose.
2. Providing courses and faculty members to integrate theories and practices.
3. Adopting teaching methods (such as case study method, lecture) which are the most appropriate for
the course objectives and course contents.
The following points are also considered for each program: In the International MBA program both
Japanese and English are considered as official academic languages. The courses are prepared in both
Japanese and English. A synergy-building interaction is expected between Japanese-speaking and non
Japanese-speaking students. The international students are encouraged to attend bilingual courses (in
which Japanese-speaking students and English-speaking students participate together), other-language
courses (language-learning courses and other courses conducted in another language), student exchange
program, interaction seminar, etc. The Waseda Business School aims to improve students' general
management skills in the one-year MBA program and evening MBA program. In the specialized MBA
program we take a specialized theme-based method of teaching in a subject area. The Waseda-Nanyang
Double MBA program is offered in both Singapore, the leading business hub in Asia, and in Tokyo.
Policy regarding enrollment (Admission policy)
With our education and research ideals towards ‘Academic Independence,’ Waseda University
welcomes a large number of students, from Japan and around the world, with strong foundation academic
ability, intellectual curiosity, and willingness to study with the enterprising spirit that is the core of the
school philosophy.
Especially in the Waseda Business School, a variety of programs is offered in response to students’
demands and aims to train future business leaders, business executives and experts who have in-depth
expertise in specific fields.

Specifically, five different programs are provided -- the International MBA Program for full-time
students to become global business leaders, the One-year MBA Program and Evening MBA Program to
study general management skills, the Specialized MBA Program to acquire specialized management skills,
and the Waseda-Nanyang Double MBA Program, a one-year intensive program of study conducted in
Singapore and Japan. It enables students to gain business and technology management expertise while
building networks in two of the largest economies in Asia. Requirements for application vary for each
program because WBS programs have different characteristics.
3. Introduction of the International MBA Program
The international MBA program is an international full-time two-year program for students aiming to
become global business leaders. A good balance exists between courses conducted in Japanese and English.
Students will acquire communication skills to understand each other in a diverse society as well as
management skills. In addition, bilingual courses (joint courses for Japanese and English-speaking students)
and intensive courses held in Singapore are part of the program. Degrees can be conferred in either language
-- Japanese or English. The school year starts in April for those taking core courses conducted in Japanese.
For those taking core courses conducted in English, the school year starts in September. International
students are encouraged to take courses conducted in another language and/or language-learning courses.
Characteristics of the International MBA Program
1) Internationalized and Diversified Community:
The student's nationalities and age range are diverse as WBS is open widely to the world. Excellent
international students from all over the world have gathered at WBS since the International MBAs can
be pursued either in Japanese or in English.
2) Semester and intensive course systems:
The academic year is composed of: Spring semester (April-end of July), Spring Intensive Course
(August), Fall semester (End of September-January) and Fall Intensive Course (February). As each
subject is concluded within a semester, efficient schedule management becomes possible.
3) Small group education:
Seminar students are limited to seven or less per grade. The average student number for elective
courses is around 15.
4) Student exchange programs:
WBS has connections with 25 overseas business schools and offers international exchange programs.
With the WBS student exchange program, students can have an opportunity to study abroad at world
famous universities without postponing the graduation period. A credit transfer system is available.

■ Application Materials Examination - Screening Method
Admission selection will be based on application documents. All applicants are required to submit their
GMAT scores. The admission screening will be based on overall performance of GMAT score, educational
background, academic record, work experience, social activities, essay, recommendation letters (applicant
evaluation forms), language proficiency scores, etc. A high GMAT score does not necessarily guarantee
enrollment.
For some applicants, telephone interviews will be required. Candidates will be contacted individually by
the WBS Admissions Office.
The results for admission will be sent to individual applicants at the “Admission Announcement” dates.
Some applicants may receive a letter of conditional acceptance. The letter of conditional acceptance is NOT
a letter of official admittance. In order to be considered for official admittance, applicants are required to
meet the conditions listed in the letter. Once the conditions are satisfied, proof documents must be submitted
to the WBS Admissions Office by the due date (listed in the letter). Note that if applicants do not submit the
requested conditions by the due date listed in the letter, the admission will be delayed to the next academic

10. Student VisaIt is, in principle, necessary for international applicants to obtain a “Student Visa” after they have been
accepted at WBS, completed the prescribed registration procedures, and effectively made the decision to
begin their studies at WBS. Students must submit a valid passport and the Certificate of Eligibility to the
Japanese Embassy or Consulate in their home country in order to apply for a “Student Visa.” For such
applicants, the WBS will act as their proxy to obtain the Certificate of Eligibility from the Tokyo
Immigration Bureau of the Ministry of Justice. Students desiring to have the WBS as their proxy are
requested to submit a complete set of the following materials at the time of their application to the WBS in
order to complete the processing in time. The WBS will not act as proxy for the Certificate of Eligibility if
the designated materials are not submitted. In addition, please be aware that the Certificate of Eligibility
cannot be issued in cases where the application for the Certificate of Eligibility is done by proxy or where the
application for a student visa is conducted separately from the application for the Certificate of Eligibility to
our school. Please also note that in some cases, the Immigration Bureau may require additional materials.
