annual report

MissionOur mission at The Arc of the Ozarks is to support individuals with disabilities in directing their own lives as valued members of the community.

HistoryIn 1959, a small group of parents recognized the need for services for children with developmental disabilities. A support network was built for these children and their families resulting in the 1964 establishment of The Arc. Today, The Arc serves individuals with a variety of disabilities. Services include: residential, education, dual diagnosis, medically fragile, day habilitation, therapeutic recreation, advocacy, autism services, employment, psychological counseling. The Arc is affiliated with The Arc of the U.S. and our programs are accredited by CARF. We are also a United Way agency partner.

As we reflect on the past year, The Arc of the Ozarks achieved record highs in both the number of individuals served and the number of families supported. In the spring, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to add the Rivendale Institute of Learning and Center for Autism to our array of services for individuals with autism and their families. The summer months saw the retirement of several of our long-time administrative staff including our former President/CEO, John Foley.

During the fall, The Arc of the Ozarks celebrated its 50th year in existence. It was a wonderful occasion and tribute to some of our founding members, legislators and many current and former employees, colleagues, and community supporters. We rounded out the year with our 20th Annual Christmas Extravaganza fundraiser that was a tremendous success.

As we begin 2015, The Arc is facing some new challenges and additional opportunities to grow and expand services as we continue to further our mission. Among these are a collaborative agreement with Mercy Hospital and Missouri State University to provide a Diagnostic Autism Clinic for the community and the opportunity to expand The Arc’s services in the Kansas City area. On behalf of the Board and Administration of The Arc, thank you for making 2014 such a success! Let’s make 2015 even better!

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO

Warmest regards. Michael H. Powers, President/CEO

SUCCESS STORIESKitty attends the day program Monday – Friday. She participates in all of the activities however over the last couple months Kitty has shown even more involvement. Kitty tends to be quiet and avoids conversation. Kitty has been able to hold conversation and greets individuals that she usually would not talk to. Kitty has greatly improved her social skills with day program staff, peers, and has even had reports from her home staff of the visible change and improvement in socializing. Kitty is a great help within the program. She always makes an effort to assist her peers on and off the vans, makes sure they don’t fall, and even enjoys pushing her peers in their wheel chairs.

Community Connections

Justin has been involved in our programs for around 20 years. He was first active in our Summer Camp Program and is currently in our Adult Saturday Recreation Program. During the past year Justin’s mom unexpectedly passed away. It has been a very rough year for his family. Justin’s Dad, Tom says that the Saturday Recreation Program means so much to their family. Every morning Justin sets his bag by the door ready to come to Saturday Recreation. Most days Tom says that he has to hide Justin’s bag because it is not Saturday yet. Justin’s dad also said he does not leave his son with many people. Tom loves that he feels comfortable enough to leave Justin in our hands and will only use people from The Arc to watch him. He also expressed that what makes him feel most comfortable is that we know Justin and what he needs. We are so lucky to be extended families for some of our clients.

EDUCATION RECREATION

When Becky came to The Arc in 2005, she was very shy and was uncomfortable around new people. She was fearful to go to new places in her community. Her staff worked closely with Becky to help her overcome her fears and she started to come out of her shell. Over the years, she has started to enjoy trying new things and going to new places. She has learned to cook meals for herself. She enjoys exploring the city, going to local festivals, going to shows and activities in Branson, trying new restaurants and meeting new friends. She went to Disney World for a week’s vaca-tion. She often tells her staff she has a lot of fun and enjoys her life. Becky works full time for SWI Industrial Solutions. She has learned to do many different jobs at SWI. Becky’s supervisors are very complimentary of her work. Becky just received a Service Award from SWI for 12 years of service. When Becky is asked what she likes best about her services with The Arc she always says, “My Staff!”

RESIDENTIAL

John moved to Newport Group Home with Renovations in September of 2013. After a brief stay at Newport for crisis stabilization and support planning, John moved to an ISL. John’s strengths in independent life skills, such as cooking, cleaning, and managing his schedule quickly identified him as a candidate for the first Progressions ISL. In this setting, three individuals receive support from one staff person who provides training on specific skills needed to empower individuals to maximize their strengths and reduce supports. John independently obtained competitive employment, and staff assisted him in checking his schedule and appropriately advocating with his supervisor, navigating transporta-tion, and becoming responsible for his finances. In addition, John began to self-administer his medication and arrange necessary medical appointments. Staff also assisted John in exploring his sense of humor and learning to utilize this as a coping skill, which allowed him to avoid previous challenging behaviors related to anger management. After maintaining employment for over one year, as well as earning eight hours of independent time in the community, John indicated that he felt comfortable leaving residential placement for an apartment and life of his own. John now lives independently with a roommate of his choosing, continues to work at Incredible Pizza (he was recently named Employee of the Month), and is provided with minimal support from Community Integration staff simply to check in and ensure his health, safety, and confidence.

Renovations

Joe has developed a number of skills over the last year. Joe has pursued employment and has been involved with a number of great volunteer projects. Joe recently started volunteering weekly at St. Joseph’s Food Pantry where he assists with bagging groceries and giving food out to families in need. Joe also started taking individual music therapy lessons this year and will have the opportunity to share his talents at Friday Night Art Walk in downtown Springfield.
