Fun for Kids in Sunday School

All kids Pre-K to Grade 5 are invited to our Celebration Center on Sunday mornings at 10:10am for Sunday School opening. Kids gather there for music and video fun, and this summer we are working as a large group together in the Celebration Center. Beginning next week, Disciple-Ship Sunday, the children will gather in the Celebration Center for a short video and then move to their Sunday School classrooms. Next week the children will move up to their next grade classroom. Remember to invite a friend to church and Sunday School.

Each month the kids study a new Bible verse and Children can collect Bible Bucks for different assignments, tasks, and posi-tive behavior each Sunday. Every third Sunday is “Sunday Funday.” Please encourage your child to invite friends. Feel free to speak to any Sunday School leader if you have any questions.

We also have Youth Sunday School available each week. Grade 8 and up are in the Youth Room, and grades 6-7 meet in the 6th grade room on the educational hallway.

Children, Youth and More . . .

Upward Registration is ComingAnnually, WMUMC offers a Christian-based basketball/cheer-leading program for children K5 to 5th grade (8th grade for cheerleaders). To learn more, or to volunteer with registrations, visit our Facebook page or contact Brenna or James Watkins at [email protected]. The registration schedule is as follows:

Thur 9/21 - 4:45pm to 6:45pm Sat 9/23 - 11:45am to 1:45pm Tues 10/3 - 4:45pm to 6:45pm Sat. 10/14 - 12pm to 2pm

Practices begin in November and first game is in January.

Summer - Fall and Courthouse Green (Our Hands Across the City Mission Work)A very successful summer lunch program is coming to an end at Courthouse Green. We have consistently served lunch to approximately 30 kids every day this summer. Thanks to everyone who volunteered - you made a difference in these kid’s lives. As we enter the fall season we have decided to change up Hotdogs and Homework. There are two main reasons for this – the first is the Pastors have been feeling the nudging of the Holy Spirit to be more intentional about why we are in Courthouse Green each week. We want to be clear that we are a part of the community because Jesus has called us to be involved in the lives of the children and families who live there. Secondly, we quickly discovered last year that homework was not the reason the kids came. They came because we loved them and provided some of them with a consistency they do not know at home. It was all about relationships.

Starting in September we are excited about offering a multi-age Bible study one afternoon a week after school. The program will be called Monday with YOUth and we will focus on a different Fruit of the Spirit each month. The capitalization of YOU in youth helps to emphasize the need for YOU to help make the program happen. (Huge shout-out to Deborah McClain for her creative naming and programing ideas.) Pastor Peggy will be leading the program, but we obviously need at least one other adult volunteer to be there each week. We are not sure how many kids will come, we don’t know how it will work in a small room with different ages, and frankly, we don’t know that it will work. But what we do know is that God is leading us in this direction which means as long as we are faithful with the program and its execution, God is in control of how it turns out.

Savage Sports Development Corp, who has been the summer lunch sponsor, has agreed to provide us with a snack each week. This organization has been such a blessing to us this year, we are thankful for our partnership with them.

Confirmation Classes to Start Soon for Rising 6th to 12th Graders - Parent Orientation 9/17Confirmation classes will begin in September for our annual journey with confirmands, the pastors and mentors. If you have a youth in 6th to 12th grade who has not been confirmed, please join us on September 17th for our parent orientation at 10:10am in the library. Classes will begin on Tuesday, September 19th 4pm to 6pm. If you have questions about confirmation, please contact one of the pastors.

Children & Youth Fellowship Groups Resume Normal Schedule Next Week, September 10th . . . . Note to parents: JAM time, M&M’s and Youth meet from 5:45pm to 7:30pm. There are occasional exceptions and those will be posted in the Warwick Weekly. Parents drop children to the specified room location and pick up there, too.

The JAM (Jesus And Me) Time Kids (pre-K) will meet in room 28. Contact Sharon Ellis at 872-8495 for more information.

The M&Ms (Magnanimous and Mindful) (children 1st to 5th grade) will meet in the Fellowship Hall. Contact Sharon Ellis at 872-8495 for more information. The M&Ms are learning from “Kids’ Travel Guide to the Beatitudes” this year.

The Youth gather in the Youth Room. We welcome all youth grades 6 through grade 12. Contact John Evans at [email protected] or 876-5610 cell/text.

Pick up brochures on the welcome stands in the Narthex and Gathering Area to learn more about these programs. A snack supper is provided free of charge for all age groups. Parents can assist with meal preparations, so please see Sharon Ellis or John Evans for more information on how to help.

Safety and Crime Prevention DayServe The City is a city based organization that Pastor Peggy has been consulting with over the past year.  On October 7 from 8:30-12 they will be going into selected neighborhoods for their Safety and Crime Prevention day.  They will go door-to-door checking to see if residents need a new porch lightbulb or a new battery for their smoke detector, and change out lightbulbs on the spot or give them a new battery if needed.  If there are children and youth who want to participate they will provide trash bags and litter-getters, and they can do trash pick-up on the streets where teams are canvasing.   They hope to canvas 3 areas downtown.  Following the morning work everyone is invited to the Clark Center for a free fried chicken lunch.   Those staying for the lunch should bring a chair or blanket.  Check-in is at the HRCAP Clark Center 392 Maple Ave., NN.  Anyone who is interested should speak with Pastor Peggy before October 1.  This would be a great time to help give back to the community.

Raise Awareness . . .

Walk to Fight Suicide this Fall

Annual Out of the Darkness Walk Takes Place September 16

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined. Records show there are 3.5 male suicides for every female suicide, but three times as many females as males attempt suicide, and that as a society, we lose 20 veterans to suicide every day.

Suicide prevention starts with everyday heroes like you. On Saturday, September 16, choose to fight suicide and raise awareness about mental health by joining the Out of the Darkness Suicide Awareness Walk.  The event takes place at Newport News Park, 13560 Jefferson Ave. in Newport News.  Check-in and registration begin at 10:00 a.m., the Welcome Ceremony is at 10:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 11:00 a.m.

Online registration closes at noon the Friday before the walk; however, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. For more information about the walk contact Letitia Laurien at 757-240-9497 or by email [email protected].

For those interested in contributing to the awareness campaign, walk donations are accepted until December 31.  Funds raised at the walks benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Denbigh Day Parade Volunteers NeededThis year, Warwick Memorial will once again participate in the annual Denbigh Day Parade on September 16th. We need volunteers to walk with our new church bus and help promote our church. Please contact Marsha Six at [email protected] or 874-3071 if you are interested in helping us on Denbigh Day.
