Pine Island and Florida’s fertile black dirt produce 25 percent of the nation’s onion crop as well as organic vegetables, sod, and flower crops. This rich farmland, formed 12,000 years ago by a glacial lake, was cleared by hand in the 1880′s by Polish and German immigrants and is farmed today by many of their descendants. Agriculture continues its economicimportance, as innovative farmers seek alternative uses and markets for their crops. Find a bounty of fresh local produce in full bloom from May thru November at The Warwick Valley Farmers’ Market – named one of the best in the county. Warwick’s natural beauty extends beyond its farmland to mountains, streams, and lakes. Greenwood Lake is large enough to accommodate water sports. It has long been a popular summer resort of such famous entertainment and sports figures as Babe Ruth. The ten-mile-long lake straddles the New York/New Jersey border.
