The first step is to find out exactly what you need and how wecan serve your interests best. Our multi-disciplinary skills are atyour service to establish the specifics of your requirements.
Construction is easier when you can get everything from a singlesupplier. Wrtsil is the only true one-stop shop for shipyards. Inaddition to the vessels design, we can provide the services of anexperienced systems integrator.
Such integration is essential to avoid added risk and buildingdelays. The choice of a single supplier for the design, engineeringand systems integration of the main equipment will ensure anoptimised solution. This also offers better risk control during thenew building phase.
Efficient engines are probably what we are best known for. Over the decades weve extendedour offering to improve the efficiency of all marine solutions. And when the systems are moreefficient, you also produce fewer emissions. Our environmental solutions ensure that you canoperate profitably in Emission Controlled Areas both Tiers II and I II.
Whether we are delivering one small spare part or a total lifecycle solution, we understandthat its all about safety, reliability and the total cost of ownership.
Sometimes, a new vessel is the best solution. And sometimes upgrading or converting an existing vessel isthe better way to go.

GAS
THE ONLYMARINE GAS
SOLUTIONS
WITH A LONGTRACK RECORD
GASTHe naTURal
cHOiceNatural gas is the cleanest ossil uel in the
world. At Wrtsil, we have or several decades
pioneered the development o natural-gas-based
power. With our gas-uelled solutions, the combi
nation o high eciency and low emissions is now
unequalled in the marine market.
readY for the fUtUre
Our product portolio meets the strictest require
ments o today and continues to rapidly evolve to
match those o the uture.
Switching rom HFO to natural gas reduces
all important exhaust gas emissions, including a
30% reduction in CO2 and 85% ewer NOX emis
sions. SOX emissions are eliminated altogether
and the particulate emissions are very low. Fur
thermore, there are no sludge deposits or visible
smoke. With gas, the stricter environmental rules
to be applied in all SECA areas in 2015 can thus
be met with fying colours already today.
the power to choose
Wrtsil is a world leader in dual-uel systems
that give you the chance to select the most suit-
able uel or uels depending on actors such as
availability and price.
Our dual-uel (DF) engines are unique in the
breadth o their fexibility. They are able to run on
natural gas, marine diesel oil, heavy uel oil, or
even on bio uels. Fuel fexibility oers a higher
level o operational saety: I the gas supply is
interrupted, dual-uel engines instantly switch to
diesel operation without loss in speed or power.
Wrtsil was also the rst to choose the
Otto Cycle or our dual-uel engines. This decisionproved very successul. Now we have more than
10 years o experience in dual-uel technology,
with more than a hundred LNG carriers as well
as OSVs and other vessels powered by our gas
technology.
lIQUId cargo handlIng
Through the acquisition o Hamworthy, Wrtsil
is now also a leading supplier o gas carrier
cargo handling technology, as well as key cargo
handling equipment. Our extensive experience
with cargo systems or LPG, ethylene and LNG
handling orms the basis or supplying new
solutions in an ever expanding technically driven
environment. Instead o using boil-o gas as uel,
as was done earlier, our reliqueaction systems
liquey the boil-o gas and return the LNG back
to the cargo tanks. This results in an increased
quantity o cargo delivered, large savings in
total uel consumption, and improved propulsion
redundancy.
welcome to the gas age
Gas is clearly the environmentally superior choice
and is also oten viably priced, especially when
such benets as fexibility and longer mainte
nance cycles are actored in. It is not surprising, thereore, that gas engines are becoming increas
ingly the choice or both newbuild vessels and
ship conversions.
Wrtsil oers a well-integrated, sae and
smooth transition to the new gas age.
6 7
Using natural gas as uel
reduces both exhaust gas
emissions and operating costs,
making it an attractive option
or shipowners and operators.
Dual-uel engines in gas mode
produce 25% less CO2, 85%
less NOX , and practically zero
SOX and particles.

Wrtsil will supply propulsion machinery or
the new M/S Viking Grace passenger erry to be

in Turku. The vessel is scheduled to enter service
in 2013. The Viking Grace will operate on the
Baltic Sea between Turku and Stockholm. The
agreement includes an option or the supply o
equipment or a similar sister ship.
Increased passenger comfort
Thanks to the propellers generating the lowest
possible pressure impulses, the vibration level in
the stern hull is very low. Wrtsil will also supply
a sound-absorbing system to minimise noise gen
erated by the engine, thus increasing passenger
comort. Since the vessels route takes it through
the local archipelago, the low noise level reduces
the impact to the islands residents.

Wrtsils dual-uel technology enables the vessel
to operate without restrictions in the SECA and
NECA sulphur and nitrogen monitoring areas.
The Viking Grace will be capable o carrying

growIng together
Viking Line and Wrtsil have or a long time
successully co-operated on ship propulsion
systems. Over the years Wrtsil has been the
main supplier o diesel engines or Viking Lines
new vessels.
It is in our best interests to co-operate with
Wrtsil, since they are experts in the devel
opment o new types o engines, the use o
alternative uels, low specic uel consumption
and environmentally sae operation. Wrtsil is a
domestic supplier close to us and oers us the
opportunity to collaborate on operational matters,
engine maintenance, technical training and eld

that Viking Line is entering a new era o gas
electric driven operation, saysTony hman,

Wrtsil Hamworthy delivered three LNG re
gasication skids that were used to convert the
2004-built LNG carrier Golar Winter into an LNG
foating storage and regasication unit (FSRU)
by Keppel Shipyard, Singapore. The 138,000 m 3
vessel is chartered by Petrobras in Braz il, where
the gas will be sent rom the Golar Winter to an
onshore gas grid through a subsea pipeline.
The new technology is based on an inter
mediate closed propane loop that uses seawater
as the heating medium or vaporising LNG. The
intermediate propane circuit between the seawa
ter and the LNG is applied to avoid reezing. As it
uses seawater, the system is extremely ecient
and requires less uel, which is less expensive
than steam-based systems or regasiying the
LNG. The equipment is designed or marine instal
lations and cryogenic working conditions, and can
handle large variations in send-out capacity.
In addition to the Golar Winter, Wrtsil
Hamworthy also supplied the regasication skids
or the 1977-built LNG carrier Golar Freeze,
which was converted into an FRSU. It has been
chartered to Dubai Supply Authority and moored
permanently alongside a purpose-built jetty within
the Jebel airport.

Throughout the liecycle o your vessel, rom
design and engineering to operations, we provide
products, solutions and services that will optimise
your vess els e ciency.
Over the years, we have gained consider
able experience in the development o energy
ecient vessels. In particular, the optimisation
o hull lines has been a major ocus area o this
development work. By combining this know-how
with our overall expertise and experience, and
state-o-the-art power systems and propulsion

At Wrtsil we optimise a vessels eciency by
looking at the whole picture, starting rom the
initial design. We study its power and propulsion
systems, the integrated automation systems,
and the way that the vessel will be operated and
maintained.
We look at the overall dimensions, the hull
and appendages, and the total concept o the
ship, hull and appendage design, and total ship
concepts. Substantial savings in operational costs
can easily be achieved i all these items are takeninto consideration rom the beginning o the ship
design process.
Propulsion includes propulsion concepts,
propeller hull interaction and propeller design,
and also takes into account alternative solutions
such as wind power. New concepts in particular
can result in great power savings. The rapidly
evolving tools or fuid dynamics have also given
us a much greater understanding o the physics
behind design optimisation.
When selecting the optimal power system,
you might consider the machinery concept, such
as electric and hybrid congurations, heat recov
ery, alternative uels, as well as the automation
and controls. By tailoring the machinery concept
to match the operating prole, uel consumption
can be notably reduced. Additionally, waste heat
recovery can generate large energy savings and
has great uture potential.
We work closely with our customers taking
into consideration also how the ship will be oper
ated, including time in port, voyage planning and
speed reductions. We oer ull maintenance and
servicing o the vessel, such as hull and propeller
cleaning, automation adjustments, and condition
based maintenance programmes. By combining
all o these items, and treating them jointly, an
integrated and more truly ecient ship operation
can be achieved.

The product tanker Bit Viking was the rst vessel
to undergo a conversion by Wrtsil rom heavy
uel oil to liqueed natural gas (LNG) operation.
This conversion, or Tarbit Shipping, qualied the
Bit Viking or signicantly reduced nitrogen oxide
(NOX) emission taxes under the Norwegian NOX und
scheme. The und is a cooperative eort in which
participating companies may apply or nancial
support in return or introducing NOX reducing
measures. Additionally, liqueed natural gas (LNG)
operation means lower carbon oxide emissions, and
virtually no sulphur oxide or particle emissions.
The re-commissioned vessel is operated by
Statoil along the Norwegian coastline.
