YEARBOOK The gridiron squad made the playoffs and earned a dramatic double-overtime win over ri- val Eureka. Senior slot re- ceiver Brandon Kakitsuka was named Big 3 Confer- ence offensive MVP. In the winter, the boys basketball team earned a share of the Big 5 Confer- ence title and had a playoff win, led by high-scoring Nick McBride, the Big 5 MVP. In track and field, junior shot putter Morgan Laney earned a berth at state. Here is a recap of the 2010- 2011 seasons. FALL SPORTS FOOTBALL Del Norte’s varsity football team bounced back from three early losses to earn a berth in the Northcoast Section playoffs, as well as a huge upset of conference rival Eu- reka. After dropping the first three contests by narrow margins, the War- riors found themselves in a battle at Brookings- Harbor on Sept. 24. With the score tied at 30-30 with two seconds left, junior Ignacio “Nacho” Moreno nailed a 42-yard field goal for the War- riors’ first win. On Oct. 15, home- coming night, Del Norte faced defending Big 3 and Northcoast Section Division II champion Eu- reka and did not back down. Down by a touch- down early in the fourth quarter, senior Brandon Kakitsuka returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. At the end of regulation the score was tied 35-35. In the second overtime, the Warriors made a fourth-down stop at the 10-yard line to earn the victory. Senior quarterback Layton O’Reilley threw for nearly 250 yards and five touchdowns. “This is for coach Luis and our fans,” O’Reilley said after the game. He was referring to longtime JV coach Steve Luis, who died of cancer last June. The Warriors finished the regular season 4-6 but fell to Marin Catholic in the first round of the NCS Division II playoffs. Kakitsuka was named Big 3 offensive MVP and earned first-team White Star honors. The slot receiver had about 1,000 receiving yards with 11 touchdowns. He recently earned a roster spot with the Humboldt State University football team in Arcata. Joining him on the Big 3 first team was O’Reilley, junior running back and safety Collin Taylor and junior linebacker and offensive lineman Barrick Sala. Del Norte earned five second team honorable selection honors. They were seniors Jalen Coney, Josh Craft and T.J. Scott, and juniors Luis Galindo and Moreno. VOLLEYBALL The Del Norte High volleyball squad may have had an incredible streak snapped, but finished the year on a high note. For 21 straight seasons the squad won or shared a conference title. The streak ended as the Warriors finished second in the Big 5 Conference to McKinleyville with a 5-3 league record, 10-12 overall. In the last game of the season against McKin- leyville, the Warriors earned a gritty five-match win at home. The team was coached by Pablo and Debbie Lorenzi, who had coached off and on since the early 1980s and were a crucial part of the Warriors’ remarkable streak. “I’m just happy with ending the season like this,” Debbie Lorenzi said after the McKinleyville game. “We went out with a bang.” The Lorenzis decided to step down after the season ended. Junior Keirstyn Anderson and senior Vanessa Alexan- dre earned first-team White Star honors for the Warriors. Honorable mention honors went to seniors Kristyn Rook and Brilynn Welch. GIRLS TENNIS The Del Norte High girls tennis doubles pair of Kathryn Gustafson and Sam Bausch earned a milestone win at the Northcoast Sec- tion Division II doubles championships in Hayward in the Bay Area by defeating Athenian 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 on Nov. 16. It was the first time any Del Norte tennis team, boys or girls, singles or doubles, won an NCS playoff match. They finished in fourth place at NCS. To get to NCS, the pair won the No. 1 doubles title at the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference Championships to earn White Star honors. In singles, Gustafson made it to the HDN finals before losing and sophomore Taylor Cleland won the No. 6 singles crown. The head coach for the majority of the year was Trudi Zottola-Gugliemini. FALL SPORTSFOOTBALL

Del Norte’s varsity football teambounced back from three early losses

to earn a berth in the Northcoast Sectionplayoffs, as wellas a huge upset ofconference rival Eu-reka.After dropping the

first three contests bynarrow margins, the War-riors found themselvesin a battle at Brookings-Harbor on Sept. 24. Withthe score tied at 30-30with two seconds left,junior Ignacio “Nacho”Mor eno nailed a 42-yardfield goal for the War-riors’ first win.

On Oct. 15, home-coming night, Del Nortefaced defending Big 3and Northcoast SectionDivision II champion Eu-reka and did not backdown. Down by a touch-down early in the fourthquarter, senior BrandonKakitsuka returned akickoff 85 yards for atouchdown. At the end of regulation the scorewas tied 35-35.

In the second overtime, the Warriors made afourth-down stop at the 10-yard line to earn thevictory.

Senior quarterback Layton O’Reilley threwfor nearly 250 yards and five touchdowns.

VOLLEYBALLThe Del Norte High volleyball squad may

have had an incredible streak snapped, but finishedthe year on a high note.

For 21 straight seasons the squad won orshared a conference title. The streak ended as theWarriors finished second in the Big 5 Conferenceto McKinleyville with a 5-3 league record, 10-12overall.

In the last game of the season against McKin-leyville, the Warriors earned a gritty five-matchwin at home.

The team was coached by Pablo and DebbieLorenzi, who had coached off and on since theearly 1980s and were a crucial part of the Warriors’remarkable streak.

“I’m just happy with ending the season likethis,” Debbie Lorenzi said after the McKinleyvillegame. “We went out with a bang.”

GIRLS TENNISThe Del Norte High girls

GIRLS GOLFJunior Sydney Benson shot under 100 for the first

time in her career in the final regular season matchand earned a berth in the Northcoast Section Division1 Golf Qualifier.

Benson placed eighth overall in the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference, one place away from qualifyingfor a White Star. As a team, Del Norte earned its bestscore of the season in the final match of the year, fin-ishing with a score of 587.

The head girls golf coach was Cris Rice.

BOYS AND GIRLS SOCCERThe boys varsity soccer team finished the season

8-7-1 under first-year head coach David Sanyaolu.The JV boys team finished the season 7-0-1,

which bodes well for the future.Jamie Ramirez and Zach Bloyd received Big 4

Conference White Star first-team honors. Honorablemention honors went to Moises Molina, Mark Stan-dring, Martin Ramirez, Tanner Walker, Ian Roy andColby Japp.

The Warrior girls soccer squad ended the season1-15.

Senior Lindsey Olson and junior Molly Lambertboth earned first-team Big 4 White Star honors.Lydsay Veerkamp, Hannah Dykes and Hailey Hulseall earned honorable mention accolades.

The head coach was Clar Byers.

WINTER SPORTSBOYS BASKETBALL

The boys basketball team burned up the court.After finishing the prior season with a losing record,the Warriors bounced back and earned a co-chareof the Big 5 title and finished the season with a 21-6 record. Del Norte also earned a Northcoast Sectionbasketball win at home and played tough againstone of the best teams in the state before falling in ahome playoff matchup.

The Warriors looked strong before Big 5 playbegan, losing only two games. They faced a challengein the conference from defending champion Arcata,who defeated them twice in the regular season, in-cluding the regular season finale to cause a tie inthe Big 5. The teams met again the next night inArcata for a tiebreaker rematch that would decidethe top seed in the Dick Nicali postseason tournamentand who would earn the automatic berth in theNCS playoffs.

With the Tigers clinging to a 2-point lead afterthree quarters, Del Norte clamped down on defense,allowing Arcata only 5 fourth-quarter points tocome away with a 41-36 win on Feb. 14.

While the Warriors lost the Nicali title game tothe Tigers, they bounced back in the division IIINCS playoffs. Earning the No. 8 seed, they facedNo. 9 seed Moreau Catholic of Hayward at homeFeb, 23. The Warriors played well from the startand downed the Mariners 64-57.

“This is an historic win,” head coach ScottAlexander said after the game.

Del Norte faced a tough opponent in the secondround in Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland, the defendingDivision III NCS champ, which made it all the wayto the state title game and featured two highlyregarded Division 1 prospects. The contest wasplayed in Crescent City, and Del Norte took a quick5-0 lead before the Dragons roared to a 66-44 vic-tory.

Leading the way this season was senior shootingguard Nick McBride, who could score from anywhereon the court. He averaged about 21 points per gameand nearly 24 per contest in the Big 5, including a41-point effort Jan. 30 at home against McKin-leyville.

McBride was named Big 5 MVP. Joining himon the first team was senior point guard LaytonO’Reilley, an excellent defender and a team leader

who could find the open man and keep things hum-ming. He averaged nearly 6 assists per game.

Jalen Coney, a senior post player who did noteven play basketball the prior season, gave the War-riors a key presence inside. He averaged nearly 10rebounds and 10 points per game and also earnedWhite Star honors.

Senior Brandon Kakitsuka and junior CollinTaylor received honorable mention honors.

McBride and Coney recently accepted offers toplay basketball at College of the Redwoods in Eu-reka.

Alexander, who led the Warriors for three years,moved to Redding after the season.

WRESTLINGWith a young team featuring five freshmen

starters, the wrestling team had a solid season.Del Norte went a perfect 8-0 in the Humboldt-

Del Norte Conference, ending the regular seasonby defeating previously undefeated Eureka at home58-23.

At the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference Cham-pionships, which Del Norte hosted, the Warriorstook second overall. A total of eight grapplersqualified for the Northcoast Section Championshipsby placing third or higher.

Jordan Lacy (135 pounds), Barrick Sala (215)and Isaac Terry at heavyweight all came in first andearned White Star honors. Sala and Terry won alltheir matches by fall. This was the second HDNtitle for Sala, who won one as a freshman.

Despite missing several matches this season dueto illness, Sala dominated when healthy. At theNCS, he made it to the seventh-place match, buthad to forfeit due to an injury. He had hyperextendedhis shoulder the week before.

“He wrestled five matches and was hurting prettygood by the finals,” head coach Aaron Schaad said.“He wasn’t at 100 percent. Taking eighth place wasa good showing when you’re injured.”

Lacy, who came into the NCS ranked third, losthis first match and came back to win four straightmatches and made it to the final day. The next dayhe lost in his first contest to miss placing in theNCS by one match.

GIRLS BASKETBALLIt was a rebuilding season for the girls basketball

team. Del Norte finished 6-15 overall and 1-7 in theBig 5 Conference with an inexperienced squad thatshowed potential.

In the last home game of the season the Warriorsupset Big 5 rival Fortuna.

The Warriors had only three seniors. Two ofthem were starters in Kristyn Rook and CaseyWalch.

Sophomore Brittany Maready led the charge forthe younger players as she led the team in scoringwith about 12 points per game. She earned Big 5Conference first-team White Star honors. Rook andWalch earned honorable mention honors. The headcoach was Buzz McCulloch.

SPRING SPORTSTRACK AND FIELD

It was a successful season for the track and fieldteam. The girls squad won the Humboldt-Del NorteConference and eight athletes made it to the North-coast Section Meet of Champions in Berkeley, onestep away from qualifying for state.

Junior Morgan Laney threw a personal best shotput mark in Berkeley on May 27 to take secondoverall and earn a berth at the state championshipin Clovis. On her last attempt, Laney had a throwof 39-08.50.

At state, Laney finished 16th out of 24 partici-pants.

The Warriors brought a total of eight participantsto Berkeley, the most in a few years.

Senior Brandon Kakitsuka earned a berth in the300-meter hurdles. He took sixth on the first day inBerkeley to qualify for the finals the next day. Kak-itsuka finished fifth and narrowly missed earning aberth at state.

Other Warriors who made it to Berkeley includedKylee Bruder in the high jump and Nichole Fugatein the 100-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relayteam. Zara Gastineau was also a member of the4x400-meter relay team.

Jennifer Goacher qualified for three events, the100-meter dash the 200-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay team.

Adan Rodriguez earned a berth in the pole vault.Katelynn Rowe qualified in the 400-meter dash andas a member of the 4x400-meter team.

On May 13 in Crescent City at the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference Championships, the Warriorgirls took the top spot with 131.5 points, while theboys came in third.

Robyn Parker, in her first year, led the squad ashead coach.

BASEBALLA promising start did not end the way the baseball

team had hoped for this season.Weather played havoc as rain delayed or canceled

about 10 games. The rain was so bad that Del Nortewas able to go outside only about once a week thefirst month of practices.

Still, the Warriors were playing well when theydid play. They were 7-4 overall after a 4-3 homewin in nine innings against McKinleyville on May2. Two days later they downed Fortuna to improveto 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference and wereonly a game out of first place.

But things did not go well the rest of the way asDel Norte lost its last seven games, ending theseason 4-8 in the Big 5 and 8-11 overall.

Senior Layton O’Reilley earned first-team WhiteStar honors. Warriors receiving honorable mentionhonors were Barrett McClaflin, Nathan Porter andTravis Stacey,

The squad was coached by Pablo Lorenzi.

SOFTBALLWith a young team, it was a learning season for

the Warriors softball squad, which finished 3-8 inthe Big 5 and 6-15 overall.

Weather also caused major problems for thesoftball team, with about 10 games delayed or can-celed.

A highlight was a victory over Arcata in thesecond game of a home doubleheader 5-4 on May14. Down 4-3 in the seventh inning, the Warriorscame back for the victory.

Senior Kristyn Rook earned first-team WhiteStar honors. Chandler Davis, Sarah Weiser, LindseyOlson and Keirstyn Anderson earned honorablementions accolades.

The team was led by head coach Jackie Heuberg-er.

BOYS GOLFThe Del Norte boys golf team had one of its best

performances in several years, taking second in theHumboldt-Del Norte Conference and having twogolfers qualify for the Northcoast Section Tourna-ment of Champions in Contra Costa On May 16.

Senior James Morrow finished with a 77 whilefellow senior Luke Polidore shot a 90 in ContraCosta. To get to this point both qualified at theNorthcoast Section Division I qualifier at the SunolValley Golf Club in the Bay Area.

Polidore shot a 78 and Morrow finished with ascore of 80.

Head coach Kirk Burrows said at the time thatthis was the first time in his 10 years as golf coachthat two Warriors qualified for the NCS championshipin the same year.

“We’re pleased for these two,” Burrows said. Polidore finished the year in second place overall

in the HDN and was only two shots behind the topplacer.

BOYS TENNISThe boys tennis team finished the regular season

in second place in the Humboldt-Del Norte Confer-ence with a 9-3 record.

Oscar Ko won the No. 5 singles title. He defeatedJeff Ahao of St. Bernard’s 6-1, 6-6, (10) in his thirdmatch of the day.

“Oscar had a long day of match play and Ithought he held his game together very well,” DelNorte head coach Sara Miller said.
