The Warrick Public Education Foundation (WPEF) operates as a 501 (c) (3) philanthropic organization to enhance education by supporting imaginative programs and projects. It is a non-profit broadly-based partnership in education established to encourage, promote and assist educational excellence in the Warrick County School Corporation.

Learning through imagination takes more than just brainpower.

The Warrick Public Education Foundation helps support our system of public education through grants to our teachers and their public schools. The WPEF conducts a grant search twice a year throughout the Warrick County school system. Teachers and administrators are encouraged to participate in the grant process. Grants guidelines are available through the WPEF Web site.

These grants provide funding for innovative and creative projects that cannot be funded through the available school budget. Grants are awarded each semester to teachers in the Warrick Co. School Corporation. Since the inception of the Education Grants in 1992, the WPEF has awarded more than $300,000 in grants to Warrick County teachers.

Grants for Teachers

Powered by the Vectren Foundation. Funds are provided to secondary school principals to be used in assisting students without the financial resources to pursue the possibility of further educational opportunities. This program provides funding for items such as SAT, ACT or GED test fees and college application fees.

Academic Assistance Program

Celebrating its 20th year, this for-credit Summer Musical Program is the flagship program of the public education foundation. Engaging 100+ students each summer for 20 consecutive summers, this professional quality amateur production provides a creative outlet for the talented students in the tri-state area. Since its inception in 1997, the Summer Musical Program has more than 1,000 local students. The Summer Musical Program increases the publics’ awareness of the philanthropic work of the WPEF and provides a family friendly event that entertains and educates 3,000 area residents each summer.

1997So many great memories from great shows! I remember camping out at Mrs. Johnson’s yard after the final show and cast party! - Kathryn Turbek (Huffman)

1998There were so many wonderful memories. But to sum up the overall experience, I would say honored and humbled... To have been part of the launch of the Summer Musical program and helping it to grow during its early stages. And then to see what it’s become and how many lives have been influenced. It’s amazing how much the program evolved and got better even over the course of those first three seasons and how much it shaped who I am. - DJ Martin

1999One of the best ways to exit my high school years, was playing the part I had always set my sights upon. The cast and crew were all terrific. - Joshua Lamb

2000The musicals were some of the best theatre experiences of my life! It was an honor to be a part of the amazing talent pool for the Warrick shows. - Chase Eaton

2001I loved this production so much! The sets were absolutely stunning, the staging was very unique, and I loved the cast. I’m still friends with many to this day - 15 years later! The thing I remember the most were the sweltering run-throughs and performances. We all had on 2-3 layers of thick, wool-like costumes (we were in a cold woods, of course), but it was July in Indiana, and they didn’t always run the AC full blast! It’s a wonder more of us didn’t pass out on stage. - Jaki Clark

2002Too many great memories to narrow down! The basis of the two theatre programs I have designed are fully rooted in everything I learned during the summers at WCSC/WPEF Summer shows! - Jen Martin (Lilly)

2003I can’t pick just one. I spent some of the best times of my life working on these shows. I learned a lot about all aspects of theatre through this program! I don’t think I’d have the same drive and appreciation for theatre without the Warrick County Summer Musical! - Devin McBride

20 years of memories2004

The friends I made from the Music Man (Wantan Pickle Dancers) will always hold a very special spot in my heart. The Chicago was a very special group that I still have lots of love for too! There are so many good memories! Making a music video before rehearsals with Whitney Wilson (Bernick), camping on Mrs. Gs lawn after strike, airbrushing tons of cat costumes for Alan Jobe, and being told I could dance by Chris Tyner (I have 2 left feet). The Warwick shows are very important memories for me and the relationships that I formed turned me into the person I’ve become. - Emily Ashmawi (Smith)

2005My two years in the summer musical program were such huge confidence boosters. Because I always found Mrs. Godeke to be so intimidating, the hard work and results she was able to inspire were always made worth it when you knew both she and the audience were pleased. - Nate Haddix

2006I think back on my time in Warrick County Summer Musicals as a time of great personal growth and friendship. Though I’m not in theater anymore, performing on stage with some of my closest friends sparked my passion for creativity and ultimately led me to seek out a field where I could express myself and tell the stories of others. I wouldn’t trade that for the world. - Jenna James

2007The Summer Musical program at Warrick County helped shape who I am as an artist and ultimately made me realize what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, music. I am now a working musician and songwriter and will never forget the relationships and life lessons learned on and off of that stage at Castle High School! - Carl Coles

2008Joseph was the closest cast I have ever been a part of. We were truly a family. That show was my first Warrick show, but my final summer musical. Everyone welcomed me with open arms, even though I was “the new girl.” I will forever hold that summer in my happiest memories. - Abby Kunkel

2009There are too many memories that I have made to put into this tiny box! But I will say a big thank you to the summer musical program, directors, and students for giving me something to be apart of every summer and for a family that I will always cherish. - Katie Moore

2010Warrick county summer musicals gave me the chance to find out a new love for the performing arts. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have had the courage to go on to audition and perform professionally. - Alejandro Fonseca

2011I’ll never forget singing “For Good” to Mrs. Godeke after her last show as our director during Cats of 2011. So many tears were shed. I grew up with her wonderful coaching and encouragement. - Kayla Mason

2012One memory I have is related to the rehearsal process of Hairspray (2012). That was my only time working with the Anteys, and I wish I would have been able to work with them in other productions. The trust they had in me from the start and the opportunities I was given were certainly factors for me when deciding to continue performing at Indiana University. - Noah Katz

2013The summer musical in Warrick county opened my eyes truly to what character development and research can do for a show. Eric and Amanda are wonderful directors and I couldn’t have asked a better to finish my high school career! I hope to work with them again and see this program keep expanding.- Craig Bryant Bellwood

2014My time with the Warrick County Summer Musical program offered much more than phenomenal training and opportunities. Throughout this program I found myself and by doing so reached heights I never could have imagined. - Austin French

2015The summer musical has been my life in the summer ever since I was in middle school! I’ve leaned so much from Mrs. Godeke and Mr. Antey as directors as well as Mr. Boyer as a music director! My love for theater has grown so much and I owe it to this program for teaching me everything I know! - Maxi McDaniel

2016This program has been what I look forward to every morning in summer and has been what I reflect upon as I fall asleep. The Warrick County Summer Musical program does more than produce a show. It celebrates music and the people that it impacts. - Austin Marchino

I was asked to write a piece about the summer musical for this program. I’m sure this will be edited due to its length. (Editor’s note: no cuts were made) I can’t say enough about it. As I use the pronoun “I” I’m sure it applies to all of us who have been involved.

In the beginning This may be the 20th year for the WPEF/WCSC Summer

Musical program, but the planning began two years earlier. I was talking to the mother of one of my former students about the EVSC’s summer program and how we both wished Warrick County could have a summer musical program for our students. I had no knowledge of the WPEF nor that she was a board member.

She brought the idea to the board. The other members of the WPEF, along with the support of the WCSC’s superintendent agreed that our students would benefit from a program similar to that of the EVSC’s. The WPEF applied and received a grant from the Alcoa Foundation to begin the summer musical program. Two members of the board shadowed and “picked the brains” of the people involved in the EVSC’s summer program to learn what was involved.

In 1996 our program was approved. Warrick’s first program, for students ending their 8th grade year to graduating seniors, was to begin in the summer of 1997. The program would be run as a class giving students the opportunity to earn two fine arts credits. Due to some snags it almost didn’t happen. It was in February of 1997 the WPEF board decided it was too late to make the necessary preparations for the show that summer. I went to the board and told them wasn’t too late. I could make it happen. So, the program began on schedule.

We need a staff Of course, at that point, I was the only person on staff. I needed

a vocal director, an orchestra director, a technical director, a choreographer, a costumer, an accompanist, someone to do lighting, sound, programs, tickets, advertising and others I didn’t even realize we needed. My initial excitement turned to panic. Due to other programs and responsibilities (and the fact that the program was an unknown) no WCSC teachers were interested in these positions. Now what?

The costumer, and first to come onboard, was one of my best friends, Alan Jobe. He was the costumer for almost every Castle HS show since he graduated from there, a person dedicated to students and their involvement in musical theatre, and the most positive person I know. And I was absolutely certain we were going to need a cheerleader this summer.

I approached my church’s choir director who was an EVSC high school vocal music teacher and school’s musical director. After a few days of thinking (during which time I bit my nails) he agreed. He not only was the vocal music director, but was the

program’s calming influence.I went to the WOODS teacher at Castle HS, Harry Steinsberger,

who had helped me from time to time on school shows. After “bugging” him enough he agreed to be the technical director.

Three positions filled. I was on a roll!Now I needed a choreographer…and I didn’t know any. I had

recently been involved with an Evansville Civic Theatre musical production. I was impressed by one of the male dancers. Hmmm. Then I found out he had been involved in EVSC’s first two summer musical programs as their leading male. Eureka! However, it took many trips into the framing shop where he worked to convince this young man, Chris Tyner, who had never choreographed before, that he could. I recognized his talent. (He went on to direct shows at North HS during the school year.) After our 10th year he left us to become assistant and then artistic director of Evansville Civic Theatre.

The hardest position to fill was the orchestra director. Most high school band directors run band camps during the summer. Somehow we found one; Steve Kessler, a former Castle HS graduate.

In March we had our basic staff. All we had to do now was: choose a show, set the rehearsal and show dates, get information about this new program out to Warrick County students, have auditions, have a parent meeting and write the guidelines, expectations and rules for the summer program. Phew!

The first show Since Castle HS’s auditorium was the largest facility in

Warrick County the show was to take place there. We chose ONCE UPON A MATTRESS for a number of reasons: it was a fun and relatively easy show to produce, it had a number of good roles for both males and females, and allowed for any number of participants. Our first show ended up not being quite as easy as we had thought originally. We had less than 40 students audition, only a couple of tech students and a small orchestra. We were hanging borrowed backdrops right before the show and, during dress rehearsal, I asked (told?) the costumer that I didn’t like the “Prince’s” costume and asked him to make a different one. (And, he’s still my friend!) It was a long, hard, crazy summer for everyone involved. “Birthing” is hard; but so worth it. As we watched the show on opening night our hearts burst with pride. These kids had worked so hard and were as dedicated as the directors in making the first WPEF/WCSC summer musical a success. We had all come so far from where we began. And that was the beginning of the WPEF’s FLAGSHIP.

As the years went by the program grew. It wasn’t long before our student involvement numbers ranged around 125 not counting the children I added whenever possible. Students were not only from Warrick County, but from surrounding counties and even from surrounding states. The Warrick County Summer Musical had made a name for itself.

It all started 20 years ago...

Reflections by Suzanne Godeke

I believe, in part, Warrick’s summer musical program’s appeal is due to our show choices. Occasionally we have chosen traditional shows (ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, HELLO DOLLY, MUSIC MAN, JOSEPH, OKLAHOMA, WIZARD OF OZ) but, most of the time we chose shows that were not often done in the area (PHANTOM, INTO THE WOODS, COPACABANA, PIRATES OF PENZANCE), were a little edgy (CHICAGO), were recently released for high school production (CATS, HAIRSPRAY, SHREK) and shows that dealt with historical events, cultural differences, prejudices and controversial issues that made both students and audiences think and reflect (my favorites) (RAGTIME, LES MISERABLES, PARADE, CHILDREN OF EDEN, MISS SAIGON).

The later yearsAs the program and participant numbers grew we needed

more help and a few positions were added to the production team. When I found I could have an assistant I knew who I wanted. One of my former students, who was teaching and directing at an EVSC HS, Eric Antey. I knew I wouldn’t be directing forever and hoped that my successor would have a similar vision and passion for theatre and students. Eric joined us for COPACABANA.

In 2008, 2009 and 2010 the summer show rehearsals were still held (in various places) at Castle, but the performances were moved to First Christian Church as the stage needed to be renovated for safety reasons. We expected to be at the church for one year, but, like most construction projects, this one took much longer. We were very fortunate to be welcomed into their beautiful facility for three years.

In 2008 I switched positions with Eric. He became the director of JOSEPH and I was the assistant director and scenic designer. The following year Eric directed OKLAHOMA while I took a needed rest only helping with individuals on character. In 2010 I returned to direct WIZARD OF OZ. 2011 was my final year as summer musical director. In February of ’11 I had to take a medical retirement. The WPEF and the WCSC let me have my “swan song.” I directed my second production of CATS choreographed by two former summer show students. My “baby”, as I felt the Warrick Summer Show was to me, grew up and moved on to new people and experiences. Eric took over and has continued to build the program.

20 years of successTwenty years ago the WPEF and WCSC started the Summer

Musical Program to give Warrick students the opportunity to participate in a large musical production. Their aim was to not only give students an opportunity to perform, but to learn about everything that goes into production, work with students from other schools and have a rewarding summer experience. They probably never realized that this program would have such an impact on the lives of its participants.

Numerous students of the program have continued in theatre in college and have been very successful in their careers. We have theatre and music teachers, a number of actors performing in community and professional theatre across the country (including a very young participant in a touring company of ANNIE), very successful technicians including professional scenic designers

(two designing in NYC), technical directors in professional theatre across the country, sound designer for touring and Las Vegas productions, a professional “flying” director/choreographer working across the world, and professional costumers working with European ballet companies, cruise ship companies, theatre companies and one student who was involved in costuming the Broadway show HAMILTON and is now the assistant costume designer for the touring production. We are very proud of these former students and their successes.

I am most proud that the program went far beyond it’s goal. The WPEF’s Summer Musical Program has produced participant friendships that have lasted for years; some for even 20. It produced a generation that appreciates arts; supporting them by becoming the audience of area high school, community and touring productions. They have become parents that have passed down their love of theatre and music by bringing their children to shows and involving them in performing arts camps. These former participants are the people who will keep the arts alive for the future.

We all want to thank the WPEF board members and the WCSC for their continued belief in and support of this program. Without these people the summer musical program would not have lasted 20 years. I would also like to personally thank those two WPEF board members who, 22 years ago, had the vision for this program and worked so hard to make it a reality.

Every winter, the production team meets to discuss possible selections for the upcoming summer. Each year the list of shows to choose from gets longer and the decision gets tougher. This year, the decision was made even more difficult by the fact that we are celebrating 20 years of the Warrick County Summer Musical program. The staff all agreed that we needed to choose a show that was worthy of representing the kinds of shows that we have excelled at producing over the years, one that challenged our students in a new way, and one that told a universal story. We feel that Miss Saigon: School Edition does all of those things.

Throughout my years studying theater, Miss Saigon has always been my favorite musical. I can remember driving around in my car in high school with my good friend David as we would belt out all of the words to the soundtrack and act out all of the roles. Yes, I know, this makes me the epitome of a “theater geek,” a fact about which I am very proud. As I have grown as a director and as a father, my view of shows continues to evolve, but my passion about this show has never waned. Now, as a father of three children, this show holds

an even deeper and more meaningful place in my heart and challenges me to think about what I do for my own children and family on a daily basis. Before becoming a parent, I could not fully relate to or adequately empathize with Kim, who is faced with the decision to make the ultimate sacrifice to guarantee her child a better life and a chance to live a life free of war and suffering.

I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful program as we celebrate 20 years of theater arts education and am so proud of everyone who has been involved in this show. We all took a leap of faith to tackle this extremely challenging and moving story. We have all learned lessons together about other cultures, religions, time periods in history, and the power of the human spirit. We have gained incredible knowledge and heard remarkable stories from local veterans who have been kind enough to share their experiences with us. But mostly, we have learned compassion and understanding as we have tried to think about what we would do if we were faced with real-life situations that these fictitious characters struggle to overcome.

Show Synopsis

Director’s Note

Miss Saigon is an epic, stunning adaptation of Puccini’s opera, Madame Butterfly, by the writers behind Les Miserables. Reframing Puccini’s story by setting it during the Vietnam War, Miss Saigon is a powerful and poignant tale of love in a war-torn country. In the dangerous days before Saigon’s fall in 1975, Chris -- an American GI -- and Kim -- a destitute Vietnamese orphan -- -- fall in love. When the city falls, the lovers are forced apart, and each must find their own way, alone. When, years later, Chris is able to return to Vietnam, he brings with him an American wife. Kim, who has waited for Chris, has raised their son, Tam. With so much devastation behind them, Kim and Chris must decide how to move forward. Miss Saigon is a tragedy of massive proportions: passionate, profound, and heart-wrenchingly honest. With a sung-through score and tour-de-force roles for actors, Miss Saigon is a theatrical experience that will stay with you for years to come.

Staff BiosERIC ANTEY (Director) Eric is thrilled to be a part of this production of Miss Saigon as the 7th Warrick County Summer Musical he has directed and his 9th WCSC/WPEF Summer Musical production that he has had the privilege to be a part of. As a Castle High School graduate of the class of 1993, Eric has been honored to be able to

come back “home” to teach theater for the last several years and to share his passion for theater with so many students in his classes and in the shows presented during the school year and the summer. During Eric’s time as director at Castle, Thespian Troupe #2712 has won the two Regional Theatre Competitions they have competed in the past two years and last year their production of The Addams Family was recognized as the “All-State Conference Production” at State Conference in Indianapolis. Eric is a graduate of the University of Evansville with a Master’s in Education Administration from the University of Southern Indiana. Eric is fond of telling the students involved in these productions that being in a show is like being in a family and he is proud to call all of these students and staff members that he has worked with over the years a part of his family. He and his wife Amanda are blessed to share their love of theater together during these shows and to raise their children (Maggie, Stella, and Parker) in the theater world. Eric would like to thank everyone who has contributed to helping him be able to do what he loves each day when he goes to work, especially to his wife and his parents for all they sacrifice to allow this to happen show after show

ALAN JOBE (Costumer) Alan will be costuming his 20th Warrick County Summer Musical. He has been costuming for Castle High School for 40 years and for Harrison High School for over 20 years. Alan claims himself to have come with the Castle building as he attended school there the year it opened. Alan is currently the Executive

The Warrick Public Education Foundation awarded just shy of $20,000 in grants to teachers in Warrick School Corporation Schools during the 2015/2016 school year. This is done in two increments following applications filed by the teachers requesting assistance with projects outside of their normal classroom allocations. The money, that allows us to do these grant requests, are a direct result of funds netted from the WPEF annual Golf Scramble. We celebrated our 25th year of the WPEF Golf Scramble this past June 27th. We truly appreciate all our sponsors and attendees that made this another successful event this year. Keep informed on this event and all things WPEF at our web site, www.warrickpef.com .

This was the first year we were able to deliver the grant awards in person to the teachers, surprising them in person with their Principal’s assistance. The recipients of this year’s awards are as follows:
