Mission Committee Mission Statement: As disciples’ of Christ, we go out in mission locally, nationally and

internationally with the good news of God’s love and grace. In faith we will identify mission opportunities and

provide hope and support to all God’s children.

Local Mission Opportunities We are involved in several local mission projects. This is your chance “to go out and serve” in our community.

Please consider one or all of the following.

Salvation Army Children’s Christmas: Once again this year WPC will join with the Salvation Army to

provide Christmas gifts to local children in need. As soon as we get the children’s information we will be

asking those of you who are interested to make a “Christmas adoption” of a child or children and purchase

gifts for them. Watch the Sunday bulletin and weekly reminders for the beginning of “adoptions”.

2013 CROP Walk results: 30 walkers, 10 volunteers, $3,490 raised, 25% returns to FISH (For Immediate

Sympathetic Help). A special thank you to all of our sponsors, volunteers, and walkers. God bless you as

you reach out to fill the needs of others.

Regional and International Mission Opportunities

Haiti Mission Team: Would you like to join the 2014 mission team that will travel to Terrier Rouge, Haiti

from Feb. 22 to March 1 (give or take a day)? If so, we need to have a commitment by the end of December

so we can start making final plans. If you are interested please contact Joan Bundy or Pastor Evans.

West Virginia Mission Trip: If you can’t do Haiti then West Virginia might be for you. From April 5 to

April 12, 2014 we will have a mission team serving in West Virginia. If you are called to help our neighbors

to the north, please contact Jake Muscar or Joan Bundy.

The next mission Meeting will be January 20, 2014 at 6:00 in the youth lounge.

We welcome new members and visitors. Note the new time starting in January.

Alternative Giving Tree and Christmas Card Sales: See the table in

the Narthex and the insert to the Sunday bulletins for information about

this Middle School project supporting Church World Service. Items are

available for donations from $10 to $6,250.

From the Food Bank Volunteers at Fauquier FISH: Thanks to all at WPC for the supply of stuffing and turkey gravy, we are all set to do approx. 200 Christ-

mas dinner grocery baskets; distribution day this year is Dec. 21.

We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your faithful support of the programs of Fau-

quier FISH. As Neighbors Helping Neighbors with food and more; we are grateful that we have your support. Thank

you, WPC, for your part in making Fauquier such a caring community.

Last week Scouting For Food brought in lots of canned goods but surprisingly little fruit. Most needed for the Decem-

Deacon Mission Project for the Holidays: The WPC deacons will be collecting gift cards to give to

those in need during the holiday season (Thanksgiving and Christmas). Cards for food, gas, or big box

stores may be brought to the church, placed in the offering plate, or given to a staff member or deacon.

The Mission Committee would like to recap the mission work that WPC supported and

participated in during 2013. We thank you for all your support and generosity. We are

truly a church that “goes out and serves”.

Advent 2013: The word Advent means

"coming" or "arrival." Advent is marked by a

spirit of expectation, of anticipation, of prepara-

tion, of longing. Advent begins on the fourth

Sunday before Christmas Day and ends on

Christmas Eve (Dec 24). This year, the first

Sunday in Advent falls on December 1. Last

year we started a new tradition for Advent. We

will have a “progressive” hanging of the greens

in which a new item of worship and decoration

is added to the Sanctuary each Sunday during

Advent. The schedule will be as follows:

1st Sunday, December 1, The Advent wreath

2nd Sunday, December 8, The Chrismon tree

& Mitten Sunday (also Pageant Sunday)

3rd Sunday, December 15, The Poinsettias

(poinsettias may be in the Sanctuary prior to the

15th but they will be acknowledged on the 15th;

The loss of a family member or close friend is felt more

intensely during the holiday season. We will join to-

gether in a service of comfort and hope using scripture,

quiet reflection, and music to ease the pain of that “empty

chair” during this holiday season.

Following the service, WPC invites you and your family to

a luncheon with other church members and friends who

are mourning the loss of a loved one. The menu will in-

clude homemade soup, sandwiches, desserts, and fresh

fruit.

Prior to the pageant, the Crafty Ladies will host the Ham dinner at 5:00 PM

(reservations are required)

The cost for the dinner is $8.00 for adults, $4.00 for children ages 4-10 years,

and no charge for children under age 4.

Reservation forms may be found in the weekly bulletins or contact the church

office.

MITTEN SUNDAY

The second Sunday of Advent, December 8th, is Mitten Sunday. Children and adults are

encouraged to bring warm mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, or socks to be collected during

worship. These gifts will be distributed to local elementary schools. They are always

greatly appreciated. Thank you to Joan Broughton for her assistance with delivering the

donated items to the schools.

SKI TRIPS

A deposit of $50.00 each is due by December 1 to reserve your accommodations at

either of the youth ski trips.

The middle school trip to Massanutten is February 21-22

The senior high trip to Timberline in West Virginia is Jan 31-Feb 2.

The next Christian Education committee meeting is Monday, January 20 at 7:00 PM in the

Women’s Lounge. Please bring any ideas, comments or concerns you may have to the attention of

the Christian Education committee, to Chairperson Chris Headly, or to the DCE, Lucy Lindsay. New

members to the committee are always welcome.

Acolytes – All middle school students are encouraged to sign up for an opportunity to

serve as acolyte for the 11:00 AM worship service. A sign up sheet is posted on the bul-

letin board in Memorial Hall (between the sanctuary and chapel).

There will be just one worship service on December 29 at 11 AM.

No church school classes on December 29. All classes resume on January 5, 2014.

No Children’s Worship on December 29. Children are invited and encouraged to

sit with their families for worship. Nursery and Nursery II Bridge will be avail-

able for the youngest children.

43 college and military personnel care packages were mailed in November and the notes of

thanks let us know that our far away (and closer by) friends appreciate the thoughtfulness.

SPAGHETTI LUNCH AND DESSERT AUCTION

Indulge your sweet tooth! Plan to support the youth group by attending the spaghetti lunch-

eon and dessert auction on January 26, 2013 at 12:00 noon.

Plan to make and donate your favorite dessert or try a new recipe. The desserts will be

auctioned to the highest bidder after lunch. The friendly competition is a lot of fun and you may get

to take home a delicious masterpiece to enjoy yourself. Prices may get a little inflated, but it’s all for

a good cause.

Plan to come and enjoy the fun. All are welcome even if you don’t bring a dessert.

(donations are accepted). Watch the bulletin for reservation information. There is no charge

for lunch but reservations are necessary for planning and preparation.

Youth Group Special Event for December

It is a youth group tradition to host a Christmas party for the children of the Haven in December. This year’s

date is Saturday, December 14. Children at the Haven are invited with their families to the church for a party and

then dinner as part of the Holiday Meal event hosted by the church. The youth group plans activities and crafts

for the children. Each year we also present each child with a stocking filled with gifts and treats that youth group

members donate.

We would like to also offer a “Secret Santa” opportunity for the children where they can “shop” for a Christmas

gift for a parent or other special adult. We are asking for donations of appropriate gifts from which the children

can choose. Remembering that the families are in transitional housing and do not have a lot of space, ideas might

be for lotions, toiletries, scarves or warm winter items, small seasonal decorations. Cash donations will also be

accepted and the youth group can buy the gift items. If you can donate, please bring your items to the church by

December 8. Thank you for your help.

Warrenton Presbyterian Church is Incorporating

The team of Elder Matt Sienkiewicz, Trustee Mark Sharp, and Attorney Pat Woodward

has been selected to work on ‘incorporating’ the Warrenton Presbyterian Church.

This is no longer a choice but a requirement as the Book of Order directs us to do so. The incorporation team has been working with members of the Shenandoah Presbytery

and reporting to session as the procedures have been reviewed and the process started.

PW (PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN) NEWS

Both Circles are reminded to bring donations for the Thank Offering to the December meetings.

There is no Coffee Hour in December to allow for the Pageant Ham dinner on December 8th at 5 PM.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will not meet during the winter months (December, January, February) but keep

those needles busy. We always need more prayer shawls.

COMMITTEE NEWS

Please Join in Welcoming our Newest Members – It was our pleasure to welcome the latest group of members during

the 11:00 am service on November 10th. The noon Coffee Hour followed the service and provided an opportunity for

meeting and extending congratulations. Be sure to look for their pictures on the New Members bulletin board just out-

side the Women’s lounge. A special thanks to Jack McTarnaghan, our official photographer. A warm welcome is ex-

tended to:

Brandon & Kristen Ashwood – The Ashwoods have two young children, Tyler Casey (2) and Alex Paul (8 mos).

The congregation met little Alex (and ‘big’ brother Tyler) when he was baptized following the ceremony of his par-

ents joining WPC. Brandon is a government contractor and enjoys hunting. Kristen is a music therapist and en-

joys singing and playing the guitar.

Jan (pronounced ‘Young’) & Geraldine Cornelius – Jan & Geraldine are new to the area, having transferred their

memberships to WPC from Tarpon Springs, FL. They are easily recognized – just listen for the British accents.

Jan is a security consultant. Geraldine is a Presbyterian Elder and now retired. Both are interested in mission

work.

David & Alison Dickens – The Dickens have two young children, Audrey Kailyn (3) and Kelsey Elise (7 mos).

David is an attorney and Alison is a very busy mother.

Sandra (Sandy) Fasold – Sandy and husband Edward recently moved to this area. Sandy is a retired elementary

school teacher with lots of interests and hobbies: sewing, crocheting, cooking, crafts, gardening, reading, bowling,

tennis, skiing and hiking/walking. Wow! Good thing that she is retired. Sandy is already active in the WPC music

program.

Anthony (Tony) & Holly Tedeschi – The Tedeschis have two children, twins John & Ella. They are already very

active in WPC and have been involved with the Haiti mission for the past three years. They own and operate the

family business, Piedmont Press, and have printed and published locally for 25+ years. The twins love to sing and

the family enjoys traveling. Look for them at the 11:00 am worship service.

Next Opportunity to Join: - Did you ‘miss the boat’ for 2013? Be not dismayed, as we are already planning for the

next reception of new members. Be the first to join in 2014. Mark your calendars for March 23, 2014 and plan to stay

for the Potluck Fellowship luncheon.

DECENTLY AND IN ORDER

Exactly What does an Interim Pastor Do?

At the most recent meeting of the Session for our congregation, we were honored to have as our guest our liaison to the

Committee on Ministry, Rev. Richard (Rich) W. Reifsnyder. Rich shared with us a sample contract document that is

standard for the congregations in Shenandoah Presbytery, and, along with Elder Bethann Rome, leader of our Interim

Pastor Search Committee, answered some questions about the process in which we now find ourselves. He recom-

mended, to the agreement of the Session, that we communicate with the congregation information about the process;

information about potential candidates, however, must remain entirely confidential. To that end, I volunteered my

space in this column to provide such information in this very Presbyterian of processes!

First of all, I must begin by distinguishing one major difference between the search for an interim and the search for a

regularly installed pastor. The interim pastor will be elected by the Session, while the regularly installed pastor ulti-

mately will be elected by the congregation. The roles of these individuals are very different. The interim will be here

to provide pastoral support while the congregation conducts the mission study. The Pastor Nominating Committee, or

PNC, will be brought to the congregation by the Nominating Committee for a vote, while the Interim Committee was

selected and agreed upon by the Session. Interims are temporary, as the name implies, with renewable contract peri-

ods limited to one year each, while the regularly installed pastor is installed for an undefined term.

The regularly installed pastor will have a “job description” based on the outcome of the mission study of the congrega-

tion, and a division of duties with other ordained staff. The interim pastor will meet the following expectations as de-

lineated in the standard contract language:

1. Completed Interim Pastor training. This is important because interims are not regularly installed pastors, and

have a limited period of time in a particular congregations. They typically do not form long standing relation-

ships with the congregation.

2. Will lead the session and the congregation through the five developmental tasks which include:

Helping the congregation come to terms with its history.

Helping the congregation discover its new identity.

Helping the congregation re-think denominational linkages.

Helping the congregation facilitate shifts in leadership.

Helping the congregation commit to new leadership and look to its future.

3. Will not be the mission study consultant. We will have a representative from the Presbytery’s Committee on

Church Development for that role in the process.

4. Will/will not assist with the mission study.

5. Will/will not consult with the Pastor Nominating Committee in preparing the Church Information Form.

6. Will not participate in the Pastor Nominating Committee search process.

7. Will fulfill the duties of Pastor / Associate Pastor as listed.

8. Will fulfill additional Interim responsibilities as listed.

In cooperation with Pastor Evans, our Interim will be expected to perform the following:

1. Plan and conduct regular Sunday morning worship and administer the Sacraments.

2. Plan and conduct additional worship as needed (weddings, funerals, Christmas Eve, etc.)

3. Take an active role in the church’s teaching ministry, including but not limited to officer training, confirmation

classes, Bible study, and other classes on an as-needed basis. Of course, this congregation is blessed with ex-

cellent teachers, so this may or may not be a priority for an interim.

4. Provide pastoral care for the congregation including hospital and home visitation in crisis and pastoral coun-

seling with individuals as negotiated.

5. Provide administrative leadership as needed including moderating the session, serving as head of staff and

assisting boards and committees with their work as needed.

Additional specific expectations have yet to be determined and/ or negotiated.

The Session will have expectations, too. These were listed as follows:

1. Will provide support and cooperation for the present ministry of the church.

2. Will review the work of the Interim Pastor in 6 months.

3. Will set a date for the recognition of the interim relationship (see “Litany of Beginning” in

presbytery’s Liaison Packet) in public worship within the first month of the interim period.

4. Will negotiate time away from the church as needed by the Interim Pastor to fulfill responsi-

bilities to the larger church.

5. Will review the contract for renewal no later than 90 days prior to the end of the existing con-

tract.

6. Will compensate the Interim Pastor according to the same terms as the previously Installed

Pastor.

My friends, we are embarking upon a new era in the life of our congregation. We are strong and

skilled. Of course, we all miss Pastor Schmahl, but it would be a great disservice to his ministry

among us if we were to embrace our future with anything but hope and faith. God is good, all the time,

and He has blessed us with each other and with a proven Presbyterian process!

I hope this has provided some information for you as to how an interim will work among us in the criti-

cally important work that lies ahead. We are up to the task.

Barrie Wince we had another successful

brunch for the Christian Women’s Club. The next one will be December 12.

December is always busy, busy and any help you can give will be appreciated. In addition to the brunch

we will be serving the Ham Dinner on December 8th at 5 pm.

At 2 pm on December 1st we will be putting up the Chrismon tree. This usually requires about 3 hours

and of course the more help the faster it will go.

Thanks to Lois and Don Hollar for the caravan canopy they donated to us to use at the Spring Festival.

We really appreciate this thoughtful gift.

Thanks to Mary Hall for saving us several hundred dollars on the new tables. As stated before

PLEASE DO NOT LIFT TABLES BY THE TOP, INSTEAD THEY MUST BE FOLDED AND

ROLLED. ALSO, THE BLUE CARTS, PLEASE DO NOT PUT VERY HEAVY ITEMS ON

THE TOP BECAUSE WE HAVE 2 THAT HAVE CRACKED. We work very hard to earn the

money to purchase items for the kitchen so please treat them with respect.

Our annual Thanksgiving Pro-

gram and Feast will be held on Tuesday, November 26

th. I would

like to thank church members Gina Bolton, Amanda Stephens, Maureen Wilcox and Nicolle Jones for volunteering to help out with food preparations for our feast.

Ciao Bella Photography photo-graphed our students on Tuesday, November 19

th. We were VERY impressed with

Dan and Mona McLinden, the husband and wife owners of Ciao Bella. They worked extra hard to bring out smiles and dimples in each and every child! We cant’ wait to see the end results!

WPS held Parent/Teacher Conferences on Friday, November 15

th. It was

good to share informa-tion about our little lambs with parents.

Pastor Carrie will be leading the preschool classes in a special

Christmas Chapel on Thursday,

December 19th. The children

will be encouraged to dress in costumes and help reenact the birth of Jesus. Parents will be invited to attend this fun and very mean-ingful celebration. Parents will be invited to join their children in the classrooms for some holiday cheer follow-ing the special Christmas Chapel.

The preschool staff will be hosting the dinner portion of

the Progressive Dinner for

the WPC Youth Group on Sunday, December 15

th.

WPS students, as well as students from Ms. Dottie’s Sunday school class, donated a total of 55 boxes of mashed potatoes and stuffing for the Salvation Army’s Thanksgiving food drive this year – WOW! Thank you for all who donated so that others in need can have a Thanksgiving meal.
