BOOK REVIEWS

RECOLLECTIONS OF A LIFETIME by Mary Katherine Killebrew (1902);Wife of J. B. Killebrew(written for her children) and Diary ofthe Journey From London to Adair County, Kentucky by James Fall.Soft covers. 180 pages, indexed. Order from Mrs. Clyde Lynch,Route 5, Franklin, Tennessee 37064. $8.00.

This is a very remarkable and intriguing story of a woman's life in earlyTennessee. An insight into the lives spent by our ancestors in the earlydays of our state arid country can be gained from this autobiography of apioneer woman. Many names and places are mentioned. Are you searching inmiddle Tennessee for some ancestor? You may find some clue here. Mr. Fall'sDiary is interesting and provocative. What an emigrant and his familyendured on a trip to America is well told by Mr. Fall.

RECOLLECTIONS OF MY LIFE, Vol. I by J. B. Killebrew (1897), soft cover.Over 180 pages, indexed. Order from Mrs. Clyde Lynch, Route 5,Franklin, Tennessee 37064. $10.00.

Twenty four chapters and an appendix constitute a very well writtendescription of a life spent in early Tennessee. J. B. Killebrew describedordinary activities of himself and his people so that these events seemedto be exceptional. His account of the young ladies of the 1840's and theirability to ride horses with grace and dexterity is exceptional and demonstrates the quality of his writings. However, wouldn't any young man ofany age have thought such of the young women with whom they were acquainted?Perhaps so, but all would not have been able to express their observationsas did J. B. Killebrew.

RECOLLECTIONS OF MY LIFE, Vol. II by J. B. Killebrew (1898), soft cover.Over 250 pages, indexed. Order from Mrs. Clyde Lynch, Route 5,Franklin, Tennessee 37064. $10.00.

Twenty four chapters and an appendix constitute the years of maturityfor J. B. Killebrew. He has become successful in his work in the tellingof an interesting phase of Tennessee and Southern History. Mr. Killebrewmentions so many names that his "Recollections" could be a gold mine forgenealogists interested in Tennessee.

BOOKPLATES, A selective :bibl~ography Of The Periodical literature ~y

Audrey Spencer Arellanes (1971), hard covers, 512 pages, indexedby Subject, Artist and Author, (3). Order from The Gale ResearchCompany, Book Tower, Detroit, Michigan 48226. $15.00

A Bookplate is a label bearing the owner's name and often a design, coatof arms, etc. designed for pasting on the front fly leaf of a book. Thelong fascinating history of Bookplates probably began by Brother Hildebrand,a Carthusian Monk gave the monastery at Buxheim a volume which containedan Ex Libris. This book is perhaps the first guide to the periodicalliterature of Bookplates. 5,445 articles published from 1822 to date arelisted, briefly summarized and the entries from approximately 600 journalsindexed. These entries are chronologically listed. The index of subject, artist, .and author is indeed helpful.

Last Will & Testament of Robert P.Currin, LauderdaleCounty, Tennessee, Probated at October Term 1857.

Contributed by Winnie Miller

" •••••••• in order to make the said Thomas Washington to execute thisprov~s~on of my will. I hereby require my executors to deliver oversaid slaves Arthur and Susan, to the said Thomas Washington at Nashvilleimmediately after my death, and that they pay· over to said Arthur out ofmy estate one hundred dollars to remove himself and wife to Nashville andbear their expenses until they can get fixed in Nashville to do somethingfor themselves. I also direct my executors to give said Arthur a set ofcarpenters tools either to be purchased anew for him or given to him outof such tools upon my plantation in Lauderdale County at the time of mydeath as can be conveniently spared, in view of the difficulties incidentto the emancipation of slaves in Tennessee. So as to remain in Tennessee,in fact they being too old to be sent to Liberia with advantage to them~

selves, and not qualified to establish themselves advantageously in a freestate. I say in view of these things, it is apprehandedby me that saidThomas Washington may not be able to procure the emancipation of saidslaves upon such times as they would wish, and believing also as I dothat they are better qualif:i..ed to earn a living in Nashville than in thecountry or elsewhere in Tennessee. It is therefore my will and desirethat if the same Thomas Washington should not be able to procure the unconditional emancipation of said slaves that he take charge of them asowner so as to protect them from molestation as slaves going at large oras free negroes which have not been singularly emancipated and that hesuperintend them in such a way that they may have the entire benefit oftheir own labour, and at the same time enjoy the protection of the laws;both as regards their persons and any contracts that they might wish tomake for services to be rendered. And in consideration that the saidThomas Washington has promised me to stand in the said relation towardthe said Arthur and Susan, I give and bequeath to him FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARSto be paid by my executors to him out of my estate. And I also give tosaid Thomas Washington in case of his death before the said Arthur andSusan or either of them shall die, power and authority to appoint someperson in his stead at his deatht:o occupy the same relation towards saidnegroes and William 6< Campbell of Williamson County, executors of thislast will and testament truly invoking all others heretofore made by me,and I exempt them from giving security as they are strangers in LauderdaleCounty ••••••• "

United States Mail ServiceContributed by William A. Burns

Recently while abstracting and copying "Death and Obituary Notices" fromold newspapers (on microfilm) of the 'HERALD and TRIBUNE' published atJonesboro, Tenn., I came across a very interesting article·entitled "UnitedStates Mail Service", in the issue of Vol. XXXVII, ft2,dated Wednesday,April 12, 1905. The lengthy article contained many facts about the 'earlyservice', however my abstract below will be rather short, just containinga few notes which I thought would be of interest to readers of "ANSEARCHIN'"NEWS.

Although Jonesboro was the oldest town (chartered Jan. 17, 1779) in Tennesseeand the First Congressional District (twelve counties), it could not boastof an established Federal Government Postoffice until April 7, 1799. Eightmonths later, on December 1, 1800, the G.overnmentestablished our "RuralFree Deliveries" (R.F .D.)., giving Washington County 31 rural routes.Today (1905), Washington County boasts of 34 routes. The 12 counties, makingupthe'First Congressional Distric;:t', today (1905), comprise a totalof 262 routes. The carriers on these 262 routes receive each $720 a year, aggregating $188,640. that Uncle Sam, scatters annually among the people ofthe 12 counties. Washington County carriers share for their 34 routestotal $24,480. annually.

With the establiShment of the JonesboroPostoffice on April 1, 1799-- JohnWa.ddell was commissioned the first Postmaster the same day. During the next106 years, 24 more Postmasters were commissioned as follows: 2. JohnMcAllester, May 23, 1799; 3. David Deaderick, Nov. 13, 1823; 4. Oliver B.Ross, Sept., 29, 1829; 5. Wm. G.
