BAMBERG Germany -- Warner Barracks community members can look around and feel like they are out in the great outdoors when in all actuality they are just minutes away from their backyard

Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation will host the second annual Night at the Lake at Engineer Lake June 10 This overnight event provides the opportunity to camp out at the lake and watch live entertainment

ldquoMany community members can remember camping out in the backyard of their home Engineer Lake provides this backyard feelingrdquo said Juergen Hagemann FMWR Business Recreation Division chief

Night at the Lake is open to the community said Darrell Clay director of Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation

ldquoCommunity members are encouraged to come out and enjoy the evening events which include live entertainment and a family-friendly movierdquo Clay said

This year there will be two live entertainment performances the rock band Operation Acetylene and country music singer Arizona

Joel Those who would like to attend the event can start setting up their tent at 3 pm The live music starts at 5pm and ends at 7 pm followed by a family-friendly movie at 830 pm

The event started last year and it was a great success Hagemann said

ldquoLast yearrsquos event had 30 families camping at the lake and based on feedback we are expecting the turnout (for this yearrsquos event) to be doubledrdquo Clay siad ldquoIt gives families an opportunity to participate in camping activities that they may not otherwise get to do in Germany It provides a safe environment that is close to homerdquo

The event is free Entertainment provided is at no cost to campers When campers or those enjoying the entertainment get hungry the FMWR imbiss wagon will be out at the lake selling dinner and breakfast food items along with beverages

If one requires a tent or other camping

equipment a limited supply of camping equipment is available to rent at Outdoor Recreation

BAMBERG Germany -- Early detection of breast cancer and treatment can lead women to living a longer and healthier life

The best method to detect for breast cancer early on is a mammogram

ldquoMost women donrsquot know when they should be first screenedrdquo said Gail Kemp population health nurse for US Army Garrison Bamberg Health Clinic ldquoRoutinely they should be screened starting at the age of 40 and if they have a history of breast cancer in the family then they should start at the age of 35rdquo

Kemp has arranged for a mobile mammogram unit to come to Warner Barracks on June 20 - 21 from 8 am ndash 6 pm It will be located in the parking lot of the Bamberg Health Clinic and is available by appointment only

When it comes to mammograms the biggest fear people have is going off post Kemp said

Kemp created a program called Bamberg Womenrsquos Health Day She arranges monthly visits to the Bamberg Radiology Center for women needing the routine screening and accompanies the patients to the center

The program was created to help increase the odds of catching breast cancer early by ensuring women living in the community over the age of 40 got their biannual mammograms

The Katterbach military community initiated a similar program by partnering with Mammographie Screening Mittelfranken Land (Mammobile) allowing for hundreds of women to get screened

Mammobile has a team of radiologists gynecologist and pathologists from Germany who provide this mobile service to women who require screening The mobile team screens at least 40 patients per day in 10- minute intervals and translated results are returned to the Bamberg Health Clinic within seven-10 days

Volunteers help make the mobile screenings possible without their support it would not be available Kemp said

There are three categories of patients who can receive screening by the

mammobile when it visits Warner Barracks

They arebull Tricare Prime Overseas active duty and active duty family membersbull Tricare Standard active duty family member or retirees bull Department of Defense Civilians

Tricare Prime Overseas and Tricare Standard will cover the costs for the mammogram if the patient meets specific conditions The health clinic will handle the paperwork for Tricare beneficiaries DOD civilians are required to pay for the costs of the mammogram

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in the United States about one in eight women will develop breast cancer according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention

KAISERSLAUTERN Germany -- A section sergeant from the 16th Sustainment Brigade 21st Theater Sustainment Command stationed in Vicenza Italy has been deemed a hero

While visiting family members in Sarasota Fla on leave Staff Sgt Eddie Peoples from the 386th Movement Control Team detained a suspect who had allegedly just committed a bank robbery and held him until the police arrived

On the afternoon of May 31 Peoples and his two children stopped at a local bank in Sarasota While Peoples was there with his children the suspect who has been charged with armed robbery and is being detained by local authorities entered the bank demanded

money from bank employees and left with an undetermined amount of cash

Peoples who watched the whole situation transpire said he knew he could not stand by He had to do something

ldquoHe waved the gun at one of my children So after he walked out of the bank I followed him outrdquo said Peoples speaking with a local television station reporter in the parking lot of the bank after the entire ordeal

After leaving his children with some innocent bystanders inside the bank Peoples quickly went outside jumped in his rental car and pulled up behind the suspectrsquos getaway car blocking him in After ramming Peoplesrsquo car several times the suspect jumped out of his car and approached Peoples brandishing his weapon Peoples remained undeterred

ldquoIrsquove been through five deployments Irsquove fought the Muqtada militia (in Iraq) everybody you can think of so weapons getting pointed at me it doesnrsquot really bother me anymorerdquo Peoples said ldquoI took the weapon away from him and put him on the ground and the rest was historyrdquo

Peoples held the suspect down until local authorities arrived on the scene Deputies arrested the man and Peoples went back inside the bank to retrieve his children ldquoEvery time I get deployed I always tell my children Irsquom going to fight the bad men When I walked back in the bank my oldest boy said lsquodid you get the bad menrsquo and I said lsquoyep I got the bad menrsquo and everyone applaudedrdquo Peoples said

ldquoWe were surprised by what happened but not really shockedrdquo said Capt Jedmund Greene the commander of the 386th Movement Control Team 14th Transportation Battalion 16th Sust

BAMBERG Germany -- Usually the first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks about a military installation is Soldiers and rightfully so

However family members make up a large percentage of an installationrsquos population Many family members volunteer their free time to take care of the functions necessary for the continued success of our Armed Forces

ldquoVolunteers are the backbone of the communityrdquo said Kimberly Millner the Army Volunteer Corps coordinator for the Bamberg military community ldquoWithout them we could not provide all the services that we offer at the United States Army Garrison Bambergrdquo

For example volunteers help take care of the families of deployed Soldiers through the Family Readiness Group or provide kids fun and safe recreational activities by coaching sports or by assisting the American Red Cross

In May several volunteers from the 16th Sustainment Brigade were recognized for the time and effort they put into their local communities dedicated to helping others

ldquoI was a little shocked when I found out I had won but I have to admit it was a nice feeling knowing that all the hard work and long hours were appreciatedrdquo said Amy Luekenga the senior Family Readiness Group advisor for the 391st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion 16th Sust Bde and recipient of the USAG

Bambergrsquos FRG advisor Volunteer of the Year award ldquoThere are a lot of great FRG advisors out there so it was quite an honorrdquo

I was excited happy and embarrassedrdquo said Kendra Goodman the FRG leader for 5th Maintenance Company 18th CSSB 16th Sust Bde and recipient of the 18th CSSB VOY award ldquoIt was strange being in front of that many peoplerdquo

There are many different reasons why people volunteer their free time Some people volunteer to keep busy others volunteer to learn a skill but some volunteer just to help others

ldquoItrsquos a personal desire to help our families in the battalion to be a source of information and to make life easier for othersrdquo said Luekenga

ldquoI just like helping peoplerdquo added Goodman ldquoI enjoy making a difference in somebodyrsquos life Irsquove always volunteered so it just comes naturally Itrsquos good for peoplesrsquo heartsrdquo

ALEXANDRIA VA -- Employees of the Armyrsquos Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation Command joined together May 26 for the casing of the Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation Command colors near the Nationrsquos capital

In accordance with 2005 Base Realignment and Closure law the command is moving from Alexandria Va to a new home at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio Texas

Casing the colors is a traditional flag ceremony that symbolizes the movement of a unit

While some may see the event as a sad occasion FMWRC Commanding General Maj Gen Reuben Jones sees hope

ldquoItrsquos going to be betterrdquo he told the audience ldquoThatrsquos what life and thatrsquos what change is all aboutrdquo

The support the organization provides to Soldiers and their Families will continue he said

ldquoItrsquos just the tip of the iceberg whatrsquos done here [at headquarters] There are other warriors ldquo about 27000 of them ldquoon garrisons around the world who benefit from the work that the employees here do hellip allowing them to go out and execute programsrdquo

Waiting for the organization in Texas are several new and renovated facilities on Fort Sam Houston including the historic Fort Sam Houston Theatre the future home of the Army Entertainment Division and a new building for the Maj Gen Robert M Joyce Family and MWR Academy which will serve as a training facility for garrison and headquarters employees

Survey results lead to Overseas Housing Allowance increase US Army in Europe Press Release

HEIDELBERG Germany ndash Eligible service members will soon be seeing more money in their bank accounts thanks to the results from the 2011 OHA Utility and Recurring Maintenance survey

The increase which raised the monthly utility allowance by euro 32 to a total of euro 656 was based on data gathered through the OHA Utility and Recurring Maintenance survey taken by members receiving OHA in Germany The increase will take effect June 16

ldquoThank you to all who took the surveyrdquo said Marlena Walker USAREURrsquos chief of financial management policy ldquoThe increase is a tangible result of the time and effort put into taking the surveyrdquo

HEIDELBERG Germany ndashUS Army Europe will mark its 69th birthday June 8

USAREUR came to Europe 69 years ago to fight in a multi-national coalition to win World War II and stayed in Europe to help European allies maintain their freedom during the Cold War

Since 1989 USAREUR has transformed from a heavy force postured to win a land war on the plains of Europe to an agile modern rapidly deployable force tailored in Europe to train to deploy and to support multiple combatant commanders

ldquoToday the Army in Europe is Americarsquos strategic forward enablerrdquo said Lt Gen Mark P Hertling USAREURrsquos commanding general ldquoOur Soldiers prevent war by training with multi-national allies we build trust with our allies of Americarsquos resolve and commitment to dignity and we prepare our own forces for an eventuality along the conflict spectrum We build strong Soldiers and strong teamsrdquo

The command traces its roots back to January 1942 as American Soldiers opened a command post in Belfast Northern Ireland in anticipation of combat in World War II Those first arrivals were the advance party of Headquarters V Corps the centerpiece of USAREUR combat forces The formal date on which USAREUR celebrates its anniversary today goes back to the War Department establishment of the European Theater of Operations US Army on June 8 1942 ETOUSArsquos mission was to conduct planning for the retaking of Europe and exercise operational control over US forces
