7-4 Compound Inequalities
Objective: To solve and graph compound inequalities involving
“and”
Compound Inequalities
“and” – solution has to qualify for both inequalities at the same time!
Steps: Graph on different number lines first Then combine onto one number line
Example 1: x < 5 and x > -2
Answer
TOO
x > 0 and x < 7
Another way to write “and”
Example 2: 2 < x < 4 read: “2 is less than x which is less than 4” Split up into 2 separate inequalities
2 < x and x < 4
x > 2
Answer
TOO
9 3 6 2x andx
2 6 8y
Example 3
3 6 12 2 32d d d
Special Cases
p < -8 and p > 4
10 – 2p > 12 and 7p < 4p + 9
Working Backwards

Math Lab Warmup
Inequalities: Solve the inequality -3x + 1 < 16 and give a reason for each step. Write your steps clearly so someone who has never solved an inequality will understand.
