• A rhetorical technique is a strategy that appeals to an audience’s emotions, ethics, and/or logic.

RHETORICAL STRATEGIES ARE APPEALS USED TO CONVINCE OR PERSUADE.

WHAT THE THE THREE RHETORICAL APPEALS?

• ETHOS – ETHICAL APPEAL

• LOGOS – LOGICAL APPEAL

• PATHOS – EMOTIONAL APPEAL

AN EMOTIONAL APPEAL IS…

• Emotional appeals target a person’s feelings or emotions – love, hate, fear, excitement, affection, pain, etc…

A LOGICAL APPEAL IS…

• LOGICAL APPEALS ARE BASED ON FACTS, STATISTICS, PERSONAL ANECDOTES (A SHORT PERSONAL EXPERIENCE USED TO MAKE A POINT).

• THEY APPEAL TO LOGIC AND REASON.

• PERSUASIVE WRITINGMUST HAVE THIS APPEALTO BE EFFECTIVE.

What is an ANECDOTE?

It is a short PERSONAL experience used to make a point and lend credibility to an argument!

AN ETHICAL APPEAL IS…

• ETHICAL APPEALS ARE BASED ON A PERSON’S SENSE OF RIGHT AND WRONG.

• They appeal to a person’s morals and values.• Include character traits such as honesty,

integrity, trust, etc…

WHAT IS A “CALL TO ACTION”?

• A message that attempts to persuade a person to perform a desired action or to do something.

• Examples: “Act Now”“please consider supporting…”“Just do it!”

Join a Winning Team

Sports tone up students’ bodies and also their minds. To start with, sports are a fun way to stay healthy and physically fit. Growing kids need physical activity to build strong bones and improve hand-eye coordination. Sports also improve muscle strength, flexibility, and the cardiovascular system. In addition, sports teach students to work well with others and have a good attitude. The challenge of the game helps players learn to keep going and never give up. Because they learn determination, students who play sports often do better in school. Playing sports is a good for the body and mind, so no matter who scores the most points, everybody wins!
