Warm-Up!!!!!!!!!!!
What country has the coldest average temperature in the world?
What country has the hottest average temperature in the world?
Where are these countries located?
Student Expectation
• Explain weather conditions and climate in relation to annual changes in Earth-Sun relationship
Vocabulary
• Weather– The condition of the Earth’s atmosphere at a given time and place (small)
• Climate– Conditions in a geographic region
over a long time (BIG)
Weather: the state of the atmosphere at a given time
and place
Climate: The usual pattern of weather in a particular place
Climate types:• Tropical: high temperatures year
round and for their large amount of year round rain
• Dry: characterized by little rain and a huge daily temperature range.
• Temperate: warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters.
• Cold: precipitation is not very high and seasonal temperatures vary widely.
• Polar: areas where permanent ice and tundra are always present.
Climate Types
• What kind of climate type is Dickinson????
There are 5 types of climate:
The Seasons
The tilt of the sun causes the climate to change and creates four seasons
1. Winter
2. Spring
3. Summer
4. Fall
The Northern and Southern hemispheres have opposite seasons at the same time of the year
Northern Summer = Southern Winter & Northern Winter = Southern Summer
Northern Spring = Southern Fall & Northern Fall = Southern Spring
EquatorThe Equator is an imaginary line on the Earth's surface equidistant from the North Pole and South Pole
It divides the Earth into a Northern Hemisphere and a Southern Hemisphere
Tropic of Canceris the circle of latitude on the Earth that marks the most northerly position at which the Sun may appear directly overhead at its zenith
This event occurs once per year, at the time of the June solstice, when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun to its maximum extent.
You get CANCER in the north
Tropic of Capricornthe most southerly latitude at which the Sun can appear directly overhead
This event occurs at the December solstice, when the southern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun to its maximum extent.
Corn grows in the SOUTH
SolsticesTwice during the year the Earth’s poles tilt toward or away from the sun more
than any other day
Summer Solstice– longest amount of daylight in one day
Winter Solstice– Least amount of daylight in one day
EquinoxOccurs twice a year when the Earth’s poles are not tilted toward or away from the sun
Both hemispheres receive the same amount of sunlight, 12 hours
