Be in your seat when the bell rings with
your homework out
and have a piece of paper for the warm
up
#DuckDynasty
Warm-UpI will be coming around checking your
homework while you are working on your warm-up
1) 2(-4 + k) = 24
2) 37 = 4x – 6x + 13
3) ½(14x – 22) = -53
4) 18 = 14x - 3(4x + 2)
Golden Rule of Algebra
If you do something to one side of an equation…
You mustdo the SAME THING
to the other sideof the equation!!!
Example 1:
5x = 4x + 7
• Box out answer.x = 7
• Get all terms with variables on one side of the equation-4x-4x
1x = 7
Example 2:
6x = 4x + 8
• Get variable by itself.
• Box out answer.
x = 4
• Get all terms with variables on one side of the equation-4x-4x
2x = 82 2
Example 3:4x + 19 = 2x +
25
• Get variable by itself.
• Box out answer.
x = 3
• Get all terms with variables on one side of the equation and all numbers on the other side.
-2x-2x2x + 19 = 25
-19-192x = 62 2
What are our steps for solving for a variable?
HINT: three letters
1. SIMPLIFY(distribute/combine like terms)
2. ADD or SUBTRACT to isolate the term with the variable
3. MULTIPLY or DIVIDE to isolate the variable
SAM
On examples 1, 2, and 3 we got lucky and didn’t have to do
much work but we still were
using SAM to solve
Example 1:
5x = 4x + 7
• Box out answer.
x = 7
• Get all terms with variables on one side of the equation
-4x-4x1x = 7
SAM
Example 2:
6x = 4x + 8
• Get variable by itself.
• Box out answer.
x = 4
• Get all terms with variables on one side of the equation
-4x-4x2x = 82 2
SAM
Example 3:4x + 19 = 2x +
25
• Get variable by itself.
• Box out answer.
x = 3
• Get all terms with variables on one side of the equation and all numbers on the other side.
-2x-2x2x + 19 = 25
-19-192x = 62 2
SAM
Example 4:3x + 5x – 8 = 2(3x
+ 7)
• Box out answer.x = 11
-6x-6x
+8+82x = 222 2
3x + 5x8x – 8= 6x+ 14
2x – 8 = 14

• Simplify each side of the equation (distribute and/or combine like terms)
• Get variable by itself.
• Get all terms with variables on one side of the equation and all numbers on the other side.
