The State of the Union Address is a speech given to the House of Representatives right before Congress is to go into session. When Congress goes into “session,” it means that Congress will begin voting on all legislation waiting to be passed in both Houses.

“The future is ours’ to win.” This was the main message of President Obama’s speech and demanded action to fix the problems that not only face America today but America of the future.

Even if you did not watch the State of the Union, I want you to tell me what you think should be the #1 priority to fix in the United States and tell me why. Explain using more than 2 sentences.

The Formation of Political Parties

-The framers of the Constitution did not imagine that factions would form but believed everyone would work together to prevail.

-A faction is

-An organized political group that share the same beliefs.

-James Madison believed that factions are nothing but selfish groups.

Parties

Why did They Form?-Politicians began to differ on how to interpret the Constitution and the power the central government.

-Democratic Republicans thought there was too much power under Washington and that he would soon bring back a monarchy.

Foreign Policy Supported British Trade Supported France as an ally

Election of 1796-President Washington set another precedent by not running for a 3rd Presidential Term.

-First election where two political parties ran for president.

-Thomas Jefferson (Democratic Republicans) John Adams (Federalists)

-It was a close race but John Adams won the race and Thomas Jefferson became his Vice President.

Everyone will line their posters on the back wall.

Students will take post it notes and post their reactions to the poster they think is the best.

The note must have a reason why you think that poster is the best.
