BODY PLANES AND DIRECTIONS
3 MAIN PLANES:
1. SAGITTAL:
vertical cut through body (up and down)
*Midsagittal – if cut down exact center
2. CORONAL
vertical cut from left to right (creating a front and back side)
FRONTAL – front side
DORSAL – back side
3. TRANSVERSE
horizontal cut
DIRECTIONAL TERMS(to give relation of one body part to another)
1. SUPERIOR
Toward the head end; above
2. INFERIOR
Away from the head end; below
3. ANTERIOR (VENTRAL)
front
4. POSTERIOR
(DORSAL)
back
5. MEDIAL
Toward the middle of the body
6. LATERAL
Away from the middle
7. PROXIMAL
Near point of attachment
(shoulder, hip, neck)
8. DISTAL
Away from point of attachment
9. SUPERFICIAL
Toward the outside
10. DEEP
Toward the inside
11. IPSILATERAL
On the same side of
