chemical factory accidents.– Lab accidents may result in permanent injury.– Following lab rules decreases chances of accidents

by 90%.– Labs are a dangerous place for students.

Learning Target 1.1

• I can determine and use appropriate safety procedures.

• I know the names and location of safety and lab equipment in my classroom.

Activity One: 20 mins

• View and take notes on the lab safety power-point.

• Set up your notebook pgs __:– Title: Lab safety Notes– Number your paper from #1 to #20, leaving 2 lines

between each number.

Lab Safety Rules

1. Use lab only when directed by a teacher (bad stuff will happen

otherwise…)

3. Never work with chemicals without checking labels carefully, and only when

directed by the teacherOn a side note, please let me know if there is an unlabeled container of fluid…

4. Have the teacher place broken glass and disposables in appropriate

designated containers

Don’t hide it! If you break something, let me know right away!

If it seems like a bad idea… it probably is…

Some people need to be saved from

themselves.

This car is propped up on two 4x4's and resting against the curb. The man under the car is WELDING... next to the vehicles GAS TANK and he's sitting underneath where he's working.

10. Keep paper, etc…

away from heat sources

11. Follow proper techniques

12. Absolutely no horseplay in the lab

13. Work only with the materials and equipment that you have been

directed to use. And don’t do this…

14. Do not harm live animals! Only handle organisms as directed by your

teacher.

15. Use safety equipment only in an emergency

In case of fire…

GET OUT!

If you are on fire… Use

the shower or fire

blanket

16. If you splash any chemical on yourself, rinse thoroughly and alert

the teacher

17. Protect your eyes, when directed by your teacher!

Often too late… use the goggles! Ugh! (Don’t be this guy!)

Chemical burn to the eye

18. Chemical spill?

Tell the teacher, do not clean it yourself!

18. Broken glass?

Tell the teacher!

19. Laboratory materials must stay in the laboratory area!

20. If a fire drill or evacuation emergency occurs, be sure to turn off all burners and electrical equipment.

Location of Fire Extinguisher? Fire blanket? Eye wash? Know their locations!

Activity Two: 20 minsTurn to pg __ in your notebookTitle it “Lab Area Map”

Draw a DETAILED map of the lab area in your science room. Include the back door.

Mark and label the following safety equipment:◦Fire blanket fire extinguisher eye wash◦Fume hood goggle cabinet◦broken glass disposal◦Label exits in case of emergency

Wrap Up 5 minsCome back to the class area

Write on pg. __ – what could you do if this happens to you? (complete sentences)◦Your equipment is not working.◦You cut yourself or burn yourself.◦You have chemical waste and are not sure what

to do with it.◦A liquid splashes in your eye.◦You accidentally drop a beaker and it breaks.

*** lab safety contract is due Friday! No contract = no labs!
