Background:• During World War II,

democratic countries (USA) believed everyone should be free. Communist countries (Russia) believed everyone should be equal. Other countries (China, Vietnam, Korea) weren’t sure which they believed.

• After World War II, these democratic and communist countries fought each other. This is called the Cold War.

Alliances• Right after WWII, the US and 25

other countries formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to protect each other from the spread of communism.

• In response, the Soviet Union (also called Russia) and other countries formed the Warsaw Pact to resist democracy and capitalism.

Goals and Policies• The Soviet Union and its allies wanted to spread

communism and force equality at the expense of freedom and people owning their own things (also called capitalism).

• The United States and its allies wanted to protect people’s freedom and property and stop the spread of communism. They made two policies to do this:– The Marshall Plan was to send money to poor

countries to help them create jobs instead of becoming communist.

– The Truman Doctrine was to provide both money and military support to these countries to make sure they did not become communist.
