Home typing pilot update

As a Trust, we have received a very positive response to the announcement of our intention to undertake a pilot specifically focused on typing clinical letters from home, with over 50 volunteers putting their names forward to take part.

This project is an exciting opportunity, not only for colleagues to take advantage of working some additional hours at home but also for the Trust in trying out a different approach to tackling some of the clinical typing workload across specialities. If the three month pilot is successful, further discussions will take place with a view to how the pilot may be scaled up and rolled out further.

To ensure the success of this pilot, with the support of our IT colleagues, we have provided details to all volunteers of how to conduct a broadband speed test in their home. This is an essential first step in the process as the Medisec system that the Trust uses for clinical typing requires a live link which needs a suitable broadband speed and connectivity. Volunteers have undertaken this test a number of times to test connection speeds at different times of the day and have sent the results back to colleagues in the IT Department. We have, through this information, identified five of the volunteers who have been asked to take home the Trust's provided IT kit to set up a workstation in their homes and test the connectivity to Medisec from their homes.

This again is an essential step as it allows us to identify any issues prior to commencing the pilot. The five volunteers have received the kit this week with a view to undertaking the test and reporting back next week.

Once we have this data we will be able to provide further updates in the Buzz.

PSL Update

Since 2018, we have been outsourcing some of our 2nd class post to PSL Print Management, who have been printing, enveloping and delivering this mail for us at a much lower cost.

More importantly, the partnership has enabled us to reduce the pressures put upon our patient admin staff, thereby freeing up their time for more important tasks. The figures here demonstrate just how far we have come since the project began.

The national data opt-out is a service that allows patients to opt out of their confidential patient information being used for research and planning. By March 2020, all health and social care organisations are required to apply the national data opt-out programme. Please could staff download this poster and display in patient waiting areas around the hospital to help spread the message.

I must express my utmost admiration and thanks to all the dedi-

cated staff on the emergency unit at Doncaster Royal Infirmary

when I was there recently.

My wife rang emergency as I was undergoing a fearsome chest

pain and a breathing disorder. Within 30 minutes I was totally

wired up for a check by two young paramedics who were very professional

and confidence inspiring in their actions.

On arrival at DRI, I was greeted by two medics who ensured that my

transfer to a cubicle was swift and very efficient. In a friendly manner,

they put me at ease and carried out extensive checks and a blood test.

I was transferred on a comfortable trolley to the main hall into a cubicle.

Nurses checked me at regular intervals including electronic tests. Despite

a heavy influx of new patients, all the staff worked continuously to ensure

that no patient was unattended.

The camaraderie between the staff was a pleasure to witness. During the

13 hours I was there, there was no sign of stress or tiredness among them

at all.

A doctor carried out more tests on me, blood and X-rays. The lovely staff

provided drinks and a sandwich for me and tea for my wife. The staff

were faced with emergencies throughout the night including a prisoner

and sadly a patient’s death. They coped admirably with it all.

A consultant kindly discussed my problems with me and he personally

took blood samples. He returned to say he has pinpointed my problem and

advised me appropriately what action to take. He was very efficient and

sociable.

I thank them all very much indeed. They are all stars.

Thank You DBTH!

Axe the Fax by 31 MarchThe NHS has been instructed by the Department of Health and Social Care to stop buying fax machines (or fax machine functionality on multi-purpose machines) from January 2019 and to stop using them by April 2020.

NHS organisations will be required to use modern communication methods, such as secure email, to improve patient safety and cyber security. DBTH and its health partners will be supporting the Department of Health directive to end fax usage by 31 March 2020.

Nationally, GPs and other NHS organisations are decommissioning fax machines and we shall no longer be able to fax documents to GPs or any other NHS organisation.

This will also apply to other external organisations that must have a secure email address in order to send or receive information when dealing with the Trust.

If you have questions or need further advice, contact Emma Alcock, IT Project Manager on [email protected]

Welcome to Our MPE Students!

We are pleased to welcome our new Multi Professional Experience (MPE) students, who will be working alongside our ward staff, medics, AHPs and specialist nurses to get a feel for how our Trust fully operates.

Currently in their first year of Medical School these students will be with us for two weeks learning about all roles within a hospital environment which all play a part in caring for our patients.

So if you see any of these enthusiastic learners around, please make sure to give them a warm welcome and support them with anything they need. As part of our commitment as a teaching hospital, DBTH has recently expanded its MPE cohort from 50 students to 75, helping us prepare a larger workforce for the future.
