Wanted: One Hundred People for The Arts Keuka Lake Triathlon, Sunday, June 11

Two hours of volunteer service will net ACYC $2000!

A job to love: watching hundreds of colorfully garbed riders, swimmers, runners; you can choose registration, head-counting, marking numbers

on their bodies, holding up a sign, warning traffic, cheering them on. And they are SO GRATEFUL they cheer us in return.

The Arts Center is once again working with Score This as the local partner for this year’s Strassburg Sock Keuka Lake Triathlon. The multifaceted race will be held on Sunday, June 11th from 7 am to noon, starting on the Keuka College campus.

The annual event attracts 500-800 athletes competing in either a medium length triathlon (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run), a short triathlon (.75k swim, 22k bike, 5k run), a medium or short “Aquabike” (swim and bike) or a Duath-lon (bike and run). There’s even a short kids tri for kids of all ages.

Generally a festive and colorful affair, the Keuka Triathlon relies on volun-teers to help keep athletes on course and cheer them on. The Arts Center receives a donation for every triathlon volunteer. Volunteers help register athletes, help with body marking, man intersections to flag turns in the course, run boats (or jet skis) to guard swimmers and hand out water at the finish line. Typically volunteers serve for three to four hours on Sunday morning.

The mission of YCAC is to enrich the quality of

life of Finger Lakes residents, artists, and visitors by providing

opportunities for active participation in the arts.

To this end, we plan, promote, and develop

art programs and projects; coordinate,

schedule, and publicize events; develop & main-tain physical facilities.

From the Executive Director (That’s the one in the

background.)

Artistic Vision Gets Its Due While trolling around the internet reading news and opinion pieces recently I was pleased (and a bit surprised) to see one of my favorite columnists, Peggy Noonan, assert that “a great leader has more in common with an artist than an economist. Economists drill deep in narrow fields, but the artist’s view is more expansive; he’s more able to grasp the big picture and see how it is changing.” Another Noonan fan, Boise State University professor Nancy

Napier, writing for the Idaho Statesman, noted “in complex times with complex prob-lems, leaders need to be able to see a larger landscape. So many challenges de-mand many perspectives, and that’s what artists do naturally.”

Here at the Arts Center we’re working to present many perspectives on art with a range of exhibits, workshops, and programs that hopefully hit on many mediums, methods, and meanings of art. We’re also actively working to use art to help pro-mote our community and provide a draw for residents and visitors alike. We believe that the arts contribute to our community in a myriad of ways and that a creative, in-novative community is a healthy community.

Banish those outdated notions of “flaky artists”! Swing by and let the Arts Center help change your perspective! You’re always welcome here. Kris Pearson, Executive Director

Calling All Artists –

Relax Into Your Work with an Arts Center Residency

The Arts Center of Yates County is once again offering artists the opportunity for a 10 day residency at our lakeside facility, Sunny Point. Available to individual artists or for collaborative efforts, the art residency pro-gram makes the white cottage, the studio barn and the new pottery studio available for artists to spend uninterrupted time working on their art.

Two residency sessions are offered – one from June 30 to July 10 and the other from September 1st to September 11. Applications for the residency may be found on our website, www.artscenteryatescounty.org or email [email protected] to have a pdf emailed to you. The deadline for applications is Friday, May 12th. Art instructors are also invited to consider Sunny Point for a “host residency.” The lakeside property is available for groups of artists on a first come first served basis (subject to previously scheduled commitments). Information on the host residency program is also available on our website.

In a Year of Tribute to the EARTH: Fire and Rain: Our Changing World

Featured in The Flick Gallery’s May show will be Carolyn Keys Jewelry, forged like fire and with droplets like rain. Carolyn Keys is a collection of jewelry designed and crafted by Carolyn Keys Hanisch in Bucks County Pennsylvania. Carolyn's designs artfully combine forms that have a unique style while at the same time imparting a feel-ing of timelessness. This is achieved through the use of rich materials that only get more beautiful with time. Her design is clean and balanced, but at the same time organic and imperfect. She's inspired by natural forms, architectural geometries, and ancient traditional arts. Carolyn's work is made to last. It is made for the per-son who expresses themselves through simple hand wrought accessories. It is made for those who want to know the story behind the objects they surround themselves with, to feel good using them, and to reject the culture of the disposable.

And blooming for spring rains, right out of the fiery kiln, are Owen Mann’s wall-hung ceramic blossoms. He says: "I create floral pieces from porcelain and clay for reasons that I cannot really explain except that I am captured by the sacred geometry and simplicity of each flower. I want viewers of my pieces to understand the fragility of the earth and my intention is to inform about the alarming change in our world's environment. Everyone loves flowers and I cannot make anything else at this time."

The exhibition judge is Bradley Butler. Mr. Butler has been making and exhibiting his work since 2006 and has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Upstate/ Western NY, Brooklyn, NY; Georgetown, KY; and Portland, OR. Butler received an M.F.A. from Rochester Institute of Tech-nology in 2010 and his work has been featured in Studio Visit Magazine (Open Studios Press). Palm-of-the-Hand Memoirists

The first Monday of every month, 4-5:30 PM, “Palm-of-the-Hand” memoir writers meet in the Board Room of the Arts Center. The concept of “Palm of the Hand” is to write about a single anecdote of your life expressed in no more than one page. If you’ve wanted to put down memoirs of your life, but didn’t know how to begin, this is a great format to start. We each read and offer feedback if requested. All welcome. (And we each kick in $1 to ACYC.)

Sunny Point: Annie’s Boathouse Pottery Project Update

Sunny Point was the scene of much activity last year, with the fantastic new porch added to the studio barn, and the conversion of the boathouse into, “Annie’s Boathouse Pottery”. We are ready for ceramic classes this year! Our two electric kilns, two electric potter’s wheels, ceiling and exterior lighting as well as a commercial exhaust fan to vent the studio are all set. There is also a clay silt trap installed to contain clay and glaze sediments and filter them from going into the dry well septic system. Additional shelving was added along the perimeter walls. Several industrial work stools were sandblasted and reupholstered. The seats on both kick wheels were strengthened and reupholstered. Other newly donated equipment includes a 12 gallon Shop-Vac, an electric drill for mixing glazes with a painter mixer and an angle grinder to clean set glazes off kiln shelves. Grants last year funded our new slab roller, mixes of clay and various glazes - all of which were used and tested under the care of our 2016 summer instructor intern, Catherine Abbott who was compensated under another grant. Other items are needed for classes at Sunny Point and we are seeking donated specific equipment and/or money to buy:

Two commercial bakers’ racks to store flat ceramic pieces in between kiln firings. (Est $150 ea from Amazon)

A rolling banquet table rack to hold eight folding banquet tables in the studio barn. (Est $300)

The Sunny Point Committee would appreciate some assistance or underwriting of several

self-help projects at Sunny Point, including: Mid-summer trimming back of bushes and shrubs on the whole property, including

weed control of the invasive Japanese Knotweed Sand and paint the pottery window trim and people door, in the same red as the barn

color (we already have the paint). Construct new ‘skirts’ to mount below the porch of the White Cottage of framed, paint-

ed lattice. Use the same style lattice as the new barn porch skirts. Delivery of several yards of topsoil and grass seed for the grading/seeding of the lawn. Delivery of a yard of "crusher run" driveway gravel to cover the excavation across the

driveway for the buried electric. If you can help with labor or donation to fund any of these, please contact Kris Pearson at the Flick Gallery. For specific Sunny Point facilities questions, contact Di Johnson at 281-682-0968 or [email protected].

Volunteer Spotlight

George Dornberger

Our spotlight this month features volunteer George Dornberger. George has lived in the area over 20 years but was born and raised in the southern states of Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. After gradu-ating from Appalachian State University, he moved to Boulder, Colorado where he spent 10 years in the restaurant industry. It was there that he developed a passion for food and creativity in cooking.

The South beckoned again, and George returned to pursue a career in golf. This career choice brought him to Penn Yan as the first PGA Pro at Lakeside Country Club’s new 18 hole golf course. He was there for 10 years, and it was during this time that he met and married his wife Vicki.

George’s next venture took him to Wegman’s where he reignited his interest in food merchandising and passion for food. George’s interests and career choices have served him well in retirement, as he loves to cook and plays golf for enjoyment. Both he and Vicki volunteer in the community and treasure the time spent with their grandchildren.

George insists he’s not artistic but holds an apprecia-tion for the arts. His mother was an artist—a metal sculptress. We, at the Arts Center, value many dif-ferent arts, and cooking is definitely one of them. So, yes, George, you ARE artistic. Thank you for being a volunteer.

Pottery Studio Opens

After several years of work and the generosity of numerous friends and benefactors, Annie’s Boathouse Pottery at Sunny Point will be open for business this summer. The former boathouse on the Sunny Point property is now a fully equipped pottery studio with wheels, kilns, tools and more. The Arts Center’s workshop committee is excited to be able to schedule pottery classes on site this summer, but the pottery will also offer supervised open studio time throughout the summer.

Mansfield University senior Alex Hileman will be interning in the pottery studio this summer. A social work major, Alex has also become a talented potter since discovering the art in high school. He’s currently studying with “the ceramic fish guy” Alan Bennett and has been teaching some ceramics classes as well as continuing to improve his glazes and techniques.

The Arts Center plans to offer up to 15 hours of open studio time per week for a fee of $50/week. The studio will be open Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to noon and from 1-3 pm, on Wednes-day from 7 pm – 9 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am – 3 pm. Those using the open studio will be required to buy clay and glazes through the Arts Center. Alex will be responsible for firings and overseeing the equipment and materials.

Stop by the official Sunny Point opening on Sunday, June 4th from 1-4 pm to take a look at the pottery studio or call the Arts Center for more details!

Marvelous Minis are Coming!

Have you signed up to donate a small work? Get on board with dozens of other ACYC supporters: artists and “celebrities” alike are signing on to donate works for the Arts Center’s Small Works show July 7-22.

All works will go on sale at 5:00 PM on July 7, and all for the same bargain price of $50. If you remember when we did this in 2015, it was a circus to watch people race for their favorite or express disappointment when someone else beat them to it. If you draw, paint, collage, sculpt, letter and frame a favorite quote, or put lake glass in a shadow box, it qualifies you as an artist, and we’d love to include your donation. Let Kris know or drop something by the Arts Center, and we’ll count you in. Pictured works donated by Wynn Yarrow, JVK and Connie Berberian
