WANT TO BUY A P ET??

Please read. Everything you need to know about buying dogs andWhy w e encourage FREE ADOPTIONS OF ANIMALS!!!

    VERY IMPORTANT

Animal breeders/ puppy mills/ people selling dogs or puppies, etc. use dogs for making money by

continuously making them breed/mate and then sell the puppies/dogs for their greed for money!

FOREIGN BREED PUPPIES are used as snob appeal by people who are ready to pay thousands of

money for it! They do not realise that the money is going in the pocket of the breeders. Further, its not

the import cost! These puppies are born in India/ imported at low cost by breeders. These dogs are

used only for breeding till their body loses the capacity to reproduce. They are then thrown on streets

by breeders because they are of no use to them.

Those dogs are kept in unhygienic conditions, stuffed in cages (see picture below) and not even fed

properly! So when you buy a puppy from the pet store/ puppy mills, etc., there are lot of chances that

your puppy has diseases/ disabilities that you may be unaware of. Many are stuffed in the same cage,

so their contagious infections are passed on to the other pups too!! So THINK BEFORE YOU BUY A

PUP!!! You are encouraging the breeders in their work! These puppies/dogs are not only sold at

puppy mills, pet stores but also sold directly to the unaware consumer through the Internet and

    newspaper ads. Please be aware!

Please adopt a puppy for free!! Encourage free adoption of Indian breed puppies. They are extremely

loving and caring! However, if you still wish to get a FOREIGN/ PURE BREED PUPPY, then please

adopt an abandoned pure breed puppy for free by contacting various organizations in your city! SAVE

    Q. WHAT IS A PUPPY MILL?Whats so bad & Cruel about Puppy Mills?

Puppy mills are mass breeding operations that are run solely for the purpose of making a profit. In

these mills, the health, happiness & well-being of the animals are of no concern. The animals are kept

in terribly inhumane conditions, where they live in cramped and unsanitary quarters. Many of them

have never been outside a cage, never been held, not received any necessary medical care, never

received any affection or caring human interaction and never had a treat or a toy to play with and are

basically just being kept alive to be sold or to produce litters. All they know are the close, cramped

cages that confine them day after day, year after year. They have very limited socialization and are

    not even fed properly.

Dogs at puppy mills are bred and over-bred until their bodies give up and they can no longer produce

litters. They are kept alive for one purpose only to breed puppies for profit. When they can no longer

do their "job" because of age or illness, they are inhumanely put down, abandoned or sold to other

mills for as little as Rs. 25 at auction. They are usually ill, disfigured, diseased or hurt and are alwaysabused and neglected.

Over breeding and inbreedingto this extent are not only cruel to the breeding animals, but also cruel

to their offspring who are often born with illnesses, chronic medical neglect, genetic deformities and

    behaviour and/or health problems.

In addition to being sold at pet stores, mill puppies are also sold directly to the unknowing consumer

through the Internet, newspaper ads and from the mill itself.

Never buy pets at any cost from:

    1. Puppy Mills: As the name suggests such places are devoted to churning out puppies in volume

without due consideration to their welfare and well being. Puppies from puppy mills are raised in

horrendous conditions, rarely if ever in contact with people and are removed from their mothersprematurely at the tender age of 5 weeks (which is too soon!).

A consequence of such horribly conditions and a deprived puppyhood is that these dogs make for

very poor pets. Moreover such puppies are far more likely to suffer from undiagnosed genetic

disease as well as other ailments because it is a good bet that the puppy mills are certainly not

bothered with such trivialities as the good health of their wards!

Puppy mills thrive and rely on the unsuspecting public. The less aware you are, the more you can

be manipulated into taking part in and supporting this horrid cycle of cruelty.

    2. Pet Stores: Next time you see that cute but sad-eyed puppy in a pet store brace yourself and

walk on by. Why? Because pet stores are actually the sole reason that puppy mills still exist. Pet

stores get their puppies from puppy mills or from for-profit backyard breeders, two types of

establishment that arent concerned with: the pedigree purity, genetic disease or emotional and

    mental well-being of the dog.

As we walk by the window of the pet shop in town, all we see are the cute little puppies. What we

dont see are the large, inhumane breeding operations that supply pets to numerous pet stores

across India. Breeding operations put profit over animal welfare, imprisoning female dogs to breed

litter after litter, without proper medical care or human contact.

Puppies from pet stores typically get there when they are about five weeks of age and are finally

sold around 12 weeks of age. Conditions in the pet stores may be better than the puppy mills, but

only marginally. Most of the time the puppy is in isolation and has little if any human contact, which

means that if you do break down and get that sad-eyed puppy in the window you are getting a dog

that has next to no socialization skills and is almost invariably emotionally and mentally scarred!

Besides buying your puppy from a pet store; you are perpetuating this horrible cycle of canine

    misery.

By saying NO to a pet store, youre saying NO to animal cruelty!!!

The little doggie that you wish to buy may be irresistibly cute and adorable, but his parents have

paid the ultimate price and are likely still suffering at the very same moment that you gaze lovingly at

that puppy. This is what you support when you purchase a pet from a pet store.

    Photos taken from: www.animalleague.org

Newspaper Ads/ Internet: Pets are sold via various ads in newspapers / Internet by backyard

breeders. Please be aware and do not encourage buying pets because the breeders have various

sources through which they carry this malpractice and cruelty to animals by selling them to the

    unaware public.

    DONT:

Don't purchase a dog or cat from the internet or from a Pet Store. In all likelihood, these

animals come from cruel and inhumane mills or from irresponsible backyard breeders.

Dont buy a pet without visiting the local shelter first. Youd be surprised at all the wonderfulanimals available for free adoption!!

    Photos taken from: www.animalleague.org

    Help Stop the Cruelty!

REMEMBER: DONT SHOP, ADOPT!! MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

When you adopt from a shelter/puppy adoption agency, you not only take a stand against puppy mills,

you also help reduce pet overpopulation which often leads to senseless euthanasia. There are

countless wonderful animals waiting to be a faithful friends and loyal pets. Adopting pets from shelters

/puppy adoption agency shows that you are aware of the various issues and that you care aboutanimals.

Pure breed Pet Rescue & Adoption

While most people associate purebred pets with breedersnot animal shelterswe frequently

have purebred pets available for adoption.

Unfortunately, we receive calls from families who need to re-home their healthy pure breed petsfor various reasons. Often, its simply because theyre moving or their dogs/kittens have produced

litters that they cant take care of any longer.

Advantages of Adopting from dog adoptionagencies/ shelter:

The dog from a shelter/ foster home has undergone some level of house-training which is a huge

weight off the shoulders for any new prospective dog owner.

Dogs at shelter/ adoption agencies commonly have been trained the basic dog training like pottytraining, sit, shake hand, etc.

All dogs have been de-flead, bathed, de-wormed and cleaned before giving them for adoption.

Many dogs/ cats above 6 months of age are neutered which can save you the cost for this need

    when adopting a dog.

Many of thesepuppies/ dogs have been given a series of vaccinations by the dog shelter/

adoption agency so you may save this expenses which costs a lot.

You can see the appearance, size and temperament of the adoption dog very clearly by visiting

them personally at foster homes/ shelter and then decide if you wish to adopt the animal. So you

will not be mistaken while you are choosing one.

Dog adoption agencies got many stock of dog breeds so you can choose as you like. The

volunteers are also knowledgeable about the dog and willing to help you because they also want

to help these dogs to find better home and owner.

You will pay much less for your new pet even if it is a pure breed dog (typically youd just pay the

adoption travelling expense and vaccinations if required). Getting your pure breed dog from a

reputable breeder would set you back anywhere from Rs. 500 to Rs.20,000.

Adopted pets can give a lot of happiness. They make good companions for all ages and are an

excellent way for children to learn about responsibility and caring for others.

Being a deterrent to burglars and an intruder alarm, a family dog helps to safeguard the home.

Most shelters/ rescue agencies have some degree of veterinary facility ensuring that dogs areneutered/ spayed (commonly but not always) as well as treated for any ailments/ diseases and

    screened for problems.

Every year thousands of dogs are euthanized (mercy killing) in India alone, many of them being

abandoned pets or pets that cannot be in foster homes in a timely fashion, because funds for their

upkeep run out. By adopting an animal from shelters/ animal adoption agency you save an

animals life! Good Reasons to get a Dog from a Shelter/ adopting agency, isnt it??

In case, an adopting family is unable to take care of/ is unwilling to keep the adopted puppy/ kitten

they can return them to the agency where they had adopted from only without any formalities.

Thats why when you are going to adopt the dog/ kitten from a shelter you need to sign a form that

say that if you are not be able to take care of the dog/ kitten, you will have to give it back only to

    this animal shelter/ agency.

Disadvantages/ Ad-on responsibilit ies with regardsto Dog Adoption:

You dont know about the puppyhood of your adoption dog. So sometimes the dogs can have

traumatic event from the past that need to be understood and retrained to cure it. Some dog

shelter staffs may know about this so search for complete information when adopting the dog and

dont hesitate to contact them again when there are problems with the dog or the dog/ kitten is not

able to adjust to the new environment. Please contact the person from whom you have adopted

    the pet immediately.

Keeping pets involves a lot of responsibility. However, they can cause accidents and spread

disease if not properly looked after. Make sure you know how to care for any animal you own and

that whichever member of the family takes on the routine tasks will have enough time and

commitment to do the job properly. Bear these points in mind when deciding what sort of pet to

bring into the home. Dogs interact with humans so well that they soon become a member of the household,

demanding their equal share of company and attention to keep them happy and well behaved. As

dogs can live for 10 to 15 years or even more, owning one is a long-term commitment. Feeds and

exercise need to be on regular basis. Grooming is necessary to keep the dogs skin and coat in

good condition, to minimize the amount of hair shed in the house, especially with long-haired

varieties, this overtime can become more of a chore than a pleasure. Dogs bring dirt and dust into

the house, so increasing the amount of housework around them.

Adopting family must consider the expenses for raising the puppy from the start till it becomes an

adult dog/ kitten. The expenses include the food, vaccinations, grooming supplies, routine health

medical check, training equipment and classes, kennels and many others. But you must

remember, above all the cost and time you spend for the puppy/kitten you will get their endless

and unconditional love for all the time no matter what happens.

Pedigree/Foreign Breed Dogs Are Suffering From Genetic

    Diseases Following Years of Inbreeding:

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) documentary highlights acute problems faced by

Pedigree/ foreign breed dogs, because looks are emphasised over health. Check video of

PEDIGREE DOGS EXPOSED for the consequences of years of breeding in dogs causing genetic

    disorders. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O0l0f50AAk

It says deliberate mating of dogs which are close relatives is common practice and the Kennel Club

registers dogs bred from mother-to-son and brother-to-sister mating. Steve Jones, professor of

genetics at University College London, said: People are carrying out breeding which would be first of

all entirely illegal in humans and secondly is absolutely insane from the point of view of the health of

    the animals.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q:Why should someone rescue/ adopt an animal rather than purchase one from a pet store?

Rather than spending thousands of rupees at the local pet store, rescuing/ adopting an animal from a

shelter/adoption agency is much more rewarding since you are saving a life and also less

expensive. You can usually adopt a pet from your local shelter or rescue group for a modest adoption

fee. The fee may include transport/ delivery expense, vaccinations and spaying/ neutering. When you

buy an animal from a pet store, you are increasing the demand for the cruel supply of mill produced

animals. Every animal adopted from a shelter whether it is a no-kill shelter or not, will help save a

    life.

Q:Where do all the animals in the shelter/ rescue agency come from?

Sadly, there are homeless animals all over the country and the animal adoption agencies rescue them

from death. The majority of the rescued animals come from streets. e.g. orphaned puppies, puppieswhose mother is unwell or is unable to look after them, injured, suffering from illness/ infection that

needs to be treated by taking them to the veterinarian, abandoned or lost dogs (whose original homes

could not be traced) and pets/ litters from pets; searching for a new home given to us by their masters

who are unable to take care of them any longer.

Q:How long does it take a rescued animal to find a new home?

A rescued animal can stay at the animal adoption agency/shelters as long as it takes to find a loving

home. Most of the animals are prepared for adoption within three to four days. They are groomed,

medically examined, behaviourally evaluated, generally vaccinated and spayed or neutered prior to

adoption. On an average, most of the dogs and cats at the animal shelter find loving homes within a

month. This quick turnaround time enables the animal shelters to maximize the number of lives

saved. In some special cases; dogs, cats, puppies or kittens may take months to find the right match.

Visitors are reminded that adoption is a lifelong commitment. After selecting a pet, each potential

adopter is thoroughly screened to ensure that they understand the life-changing commitment/ ad-on

responsibility a new pet can be. Also, if the adopting family does not/ is not able to take care or

provide the necessities for the puppy/dog adopted or has physically or mentally abused the pet, the

animal adoption agency holds the authority to take the puppy back from them without prior intimation.

We hope you will agree that the animals welfare MUST be our foremost consideration.

Adopting families need to understand, if for any reason they cannot keep this pet, the pet MUST be

returned to the agency from where they adopted the pet. There is no exception to this. If there is

someone else who may be interested in adopting this pet, that person will be required to contact the

agency and be interviewed prior to placement with said person.
